- Description:
How are German Krebs and English crayfish related? Is there a connection between the English words foul and filth and why is the noun not foulth, or foulity? Etymological research deals with the origin and development of the lexicon of languages. Etymologists analyze written testimonies from the past and they reconstruct forms that are not transmitted. Above all, phonological and morphological changes (e.g. in foul and filth), semantic developments, foreign influences and other processes such as folk etymology (e.g. in crayfish from French crevisse) play a role in etymology. In this seminar we will look at a selection of these developments, methods of English etymological research (present and past) and the challenge of writing etymological dictionaries.
Funding and interest permitting, a study trip to Oxford may be offered in order to discuss selected research questions with etymologists at the Oxford English Dictionary project. Further information will be given in time.
The Übung which accompanies the Seminar (Wednesday, 12:15-13:00) is designed for discussions of project work and other assignments individually and/or in small groups. Individual arrangements will be made also, if necessary, concerning the time of the Übung. Therefore clashes with other courses scheduled for the same time slot as the Übung can be avoided.
