John Webster's "The Duchess of Malfi" Unbound: Femine Spaces, Purity and the Return of the Abject

John Webster is one of the most important Jacobean playwrights, and his tragedy "The Duchess of Malfi" is a truly unique play. This lecture serves as an introduction to Webster's work as well as to the specific role which the genre of tragedy played in Elizabethan and Jacobean times. Moreover, it seeks to demonstrate that Webster presents an unprecedented conception of feminine identity which is linked to an affirmative understading of female sexuality, a non-traditional understanding of motherhood and to the notion of the abject.
