Für Studienortwechsler, Erasmusstudenten sowie Studierende, die den Leistungsnachweis zur baldigen Prüfungsanmeldung benötigen, werden im begrenzten Umfang Plätze freigehalten. Bei Überbuchung des Seminars fällt die Entscheidung über die Teilnahme in Rücksprache mit der Dozentin.
Scheinanforderungen
2 ECTS: regular active participation in class + oral presentation
4 ECTS: regular active participation in class + oral presentation + short assignment
6 ECTS: regular active participation in class + oral presentation + written paper
8 ECTS sind nur für BA-Studierende nach Absprache mit der Dozentin vor Semesterbeginn möglich.
Modulanbindungen
Diese Lehrveranstaltung ist für alle Studiengänge der englischen Sprachwissenschaft (Lehramt, BA, MA usw.) geeignet, in denen 2, 4 oder 6 ECTS erforderlich sind.
- Inhalt
- Pragmatics studies the way we convey meaning through communication. This meaning includes, among other factors, utterances as they occur in the context of actual conversations, the relationship between speakers as well as the context of different settings and cultures, in short: meaning in interaction.
In this seminar we will look at some of the classic pragmatic approaches to language, such as
- speech acts: Why is the question "Could you open the window?" not so much a question as a command?
- Grice's cooperative principle of communication: What does it mean when I answer your question "Do you like my new dress?" with "It's pink."?
- deixis: Why is the note on your lecturer's door "Back in twenty minutes" relatively useless to you?
- reference and inference: For whom does it make sense to say "The cheese sandwich left without paying"?
- conventions of politeness and address across different cultures: How come that Germans are often considered rude, Brits snobbish, and Americans shallow by other cultures?
In addition to these basic theories, we will look at some current issues and applications, such as the language of power and manipulation, the language of the media and advertising, and the language of jokes and humour.
Since pragmatics is one of the linguistic fields relevant in the Staatsexamen, advanced Lehramt students are invited to attend the course without credits.
