Vortrag Prof. Dr. Benjamin Isaac (Tel Aviv): Nationality and Ideology in the Roman Near East

Geographical, ethnic and administrative names are markers of ethnicity and group identity. In the Roman Near East, we encounter a remarkable fluctuation in the meaning and use of names: Judea, Palestine, Syria and Phoenicia, for instance, have a long history. Geographical concepts turn into ethnic ones or into administrative terms. Ethnic appellations become geographic names and so on. Proper consideration may help us understand ancient concepts of group identity and their use for political and ideological purposes.
