Inhalt
This course is dedicated to the studies of Ilkhanid architecture and architectural decoration of Ilkhanid monuments in Iran. The course provides an overview of architectural structures and their decoration, which were sponsored by descendants of Genghis Khan, the Ilkhanid dynasty (1256 1335/1353). The discourse is contextualized with brief examination of earlier and later architecture in the region. The course portraits descendants of Mongols as patrons of dazzling art and monuments based on still emerging scientific evidence of their Material Culture. The course consists of critical discussion of Ilkhanid monuments and detailed examination of architectural decoration in wall painting, tile and especially stucco media. Discussion of Ilkhanid monuments consists of scrutiny of information about their construction and decoration phases, identity of their patrons, political climate in which they were built, artistic techniques for the production of their revetments, identity and mobility of architectural decoration craftsmen and artists in order to pinpoint form, function and meaning of Ilkhanid monuments and their architectural decoration. Special attention is paid to the Ilkhanid stucco decoration. A part from monuments located in Iran, some attention will also be given to monuments in Turkey, Iraq and Azerbaijan, in order to address the question of possible regional traits of architecture and its decoration. Based on these Ilkhanid examples, the course illustrates different possibilities of examining Islamic architecture and architectural decoration and debates main research questions related to the form, function and meaning of Islamic architectural structures. By doing so, it aims to provide students with transferrable knowledge of research methodology and lines of inquiry, for research, discussion and understanding of History of Islamic Architecture. This course is going to be taught in English. Students should feel free to communicate and sustain their exams in English or German, according to their preferences. Type of examination is to be decided by every student based on their module and curriculum requirements. Course Requirements: basic knowledge of Western History of Art and Architecture is necessary, basic knowledge of History of Islamic Art and/or Architecture is also desired.
