Metaphors of Space in Films by Andrei Zvyagintsev

The workshop will focus on spatial systems which were created by Andrei Zvyagintsev in his most recent films (Elena, Leviathan, Loveless). We will discuss the metaphor of the mirror, which is encoded both in the visual organization of the film space (subdued to the rules of symmetry) and the ways of building up the main film characters. The presentation will concentrate on the integral components of Zvyagintsev’s artistic method such as the device of the loop, visual signs of cyclicality, repetition of biblical and cultural-mythological symbols. The spatial systems which turn attention to the ambiguous nature of the reality constitute the dominant metaphors, which can be read as signum of the disintegration of the contemporary world.
