In order to flesh out these interdependencies, some major aspects and factors shall be dealt with: a novel wave of Ottomanization and modernizing reform policies under the rule of Muhammad Ali Pasha (r. 1805-1848) and his successors; emerging trends towards Europeanization and shifting cultural hegemonies in the context of European economic expansion, imperialism, and colonialism; the roles of European and local /experts/ and /connoisseurs/ in urban and architectural modernization as well as in the development of conservation politics; the conceptualization of Arab Art / Islamic Art , manifestations of Orientalism, and the development of Neo-Islamic architecture as one example of the rise of historical revival styles in the 19th century; and phenomena of not only preservation, but of construction and staging of heritage for the purposes of identity construction and nation-building, for touristic consumption, and for the representation of images of Egyptian identity for international audiences both abroad at the 19th century World Fairs/Universal Exhibitions and at home in Cairo.
