- Inhalt
- The course provides a practical introduction to linguistic fieldwork, with the aim of describing a language of which the participants have no prior knowledge.
The course has two parts: first, there are regular sessions with a native speaker of that language, and students attempt to discover the main aspects of lexicon and grammar through the technique of elicitation.
Second, there are sessions with the linguistic supervisor, who guides the analysis and supervises the handling of the language data.
Students will be obliged to take on some sub-area of the analysis, and to produce a short description using the material that is gathered during the field-work sessions (which are generally recorded).
For general background on fieldwork, see the chapters from Meakins et al. on the VC.
