4. Requirements for successful completion of the course:
3 ECTS: regular active participation in class + short oral presentation
6 ECTS: regular active participation in class + oral presentation with written version
8 ECTS (BA): regular active participation in class + oral presentation + seminar paper (3.500-4.500 words)
8 ECTS: regular active participation in class + oral presentation + seminar paper (4.500-6.000 words)

- Description:
Word-formation is, like borrowing words from other languages and semantic transfer, one of the basic types of vocabulary extension and is therefore highly relevant to the functioning of language. The main topics discussed in this seminar are: basic concepts of lexicology and word-formation; how complex words become part of the language and what may happen to them after their formation (institutionalization, lexicalization, and the recent discussion about antilexicalization phenomena such as the 'back-formation' of to burgle from the burglar and the 'folk-etymological' creation of mushroom from musseron); types and mechanisms of English word-formation (especially compounding, derivation); issues of classification (in particular neoclassical compounds, verbal compounds); processes underlying the formation of complex lexemes (creativity, productivity and the mental lexicon); diachronic aspects with particular regard to typical features of Old and Middle English word-formation; and also a discussion of the question in how far phraseological units (more or less fixed multi-word expressions such as to spill the beans 'to give away information') may be considered as belonging to word-formation. In addition to theoretical discussion, practical applications and exercises will help to illuminate the topics and to involve all participants in the discussion.
A focus on medieval English will be offered for students of "BA/MA Medieval Studies" on demand.
The Übung which accompanies the seminar (Wednesday, 9:15-10:00) is designed for discussions of project work and other assignments individually and/or in small groups. Individual arrangements will be made also, if necessary, concerning the time of the Übung. Therefore clashes with other courses scheduled for the same time slot as the Übung can be avoided.
