- Inhalt:
- Innerhalb von nicht mehr als 40 bis 50 Generationen, die zwischen der Herrschaft von König Alfred und der Gegenwart liegen, hat sich das Englische so stark verändert, dass es beim Vergleich eines altenglischen mit einem neuenglischen Text gleichen Inhalts kaum mehr als dieselbe Sprache zu erkennen ist. Viele Bereiche des Sprachsystems waren extremen Veränderungsprozessen unterworfen. Diese Tatsache und die relativ zahlreich erhaltenen Zeugnisse früherer Sprachzustände, z.B. verschiedene Bibelübersetzungen, machen das Englische zu einem lohnenden Forschungsgegenstand für die historische Linguistik.
Das Seminar bietet einen Überblick über die Entwicklung der englischen Sprache vom Altenglischen bis heute. Neben grundlegenden Aspekten der historischen Linguistik werden Kontinuität und Wandel vor allem in den Bereichen der Phonologie, der Morphologie, der Syntax und des Lexikons beleuchtet. Dabei gewinnen die Studierenden vertiefte Einblicke in den historischen Werdegang der englischen Sprache im Besonderen und in Gesetzmäßigkeiten des Sprachwandels im Allgemeinen.

- Inhalt:
- This course is concerned with central aspects of phonetics and basic phonological concepts. It will provide a description and classification of speech sounds together with a discussion of all English vowels, semi-vowels and consonants. Particular attention will be paid to the problems German learners have with English pronunciation. Students will learn to use the IPA system to transcribe English texts, including the use of strong and weak forms, lexical and syntactic stress. Core readings and texts for transcription will be made available on the Virtual Campus after each session.

- Inhalt:
- In this seminar we will explore language-related Internet resources that are commonly used by both native and non-native speakers aiming to check the correctness and improve the quality of their (written) English. These include resources such as:
- online versions of published monolingual dictionaries
- online versions of published bilingual dictionaries
- collaborative monolingual dictionaries
- collaborative multilingual dictionaries
- collocation dictionaries
- multi-purpose lexical databases
- online machine translation tools
- corpus platforms for teachers and pupils
- materials for English language teaching
- tools for academic writing
Work in the seminar will catalogue resources already known to students and compile an inventory of further comparable websites. In a second step, we will jointly develop evaluation criteria for different types of resources. Students’ contributions will be devoted to systematically exploring and discussing the functionalities and limitations of the resources, the data they are based on and their technical background. In particular, we will investigate how well they reflect actual language usage as represented in linguistic corpora (which we will explore through professional platforms such as sketchengine.eu, corpus.byu.edu and cqpweb.lancs.ac.uk). Termpapers will focus on two or more web resources of the same kind, compare their strengths and weaknesses and assess their quality from the point of view of descriptive linguistics. Students will not only become familiar with a variety of potentially useful websites, but they will also acquire a well-informed, critical approach to language-related web resources.

- This practical exercise complements the course "English Phonetics and Phonology". Using a diagnostic word list and text that students will record, participants' attention will be directed to their individual problems with English pronunciation (if any), and remedial exercises will be suggested. At the end of term, we hope to pinpoint improvements in a renewed recording.

BA major English and American studies (75 ECTS): Choose the Ergänzungsmodul in one of the two fields in which you are doing the Aufbaumodule (i.e. Literature, Linguistics or Cultural Studies).
BA minor English and American studies (30 or 45 ECTS): Choose the Ergänzungsmodul in the same field in which you are doing the Aufbaumodul (i.e. Literature, Linguistics or Cultural Studies).
A short note on the time slots above:
The course consists of two parts, both of which are obligatory: Four hours on Monday (dealing with academic writing in linguistics) and four hours either on Thursday or on Friday (dealing with empirical data in linguistics), with a little project work in between. There are, however, alternative times and dates to enable you to fit the course into your timetable. Please contact the lecturers for special arrangements if you encounter timetabling issues.

- Description:
The Übung Methods and Theories in Linguistics accompanies the linguistic seminar in the Ergänzungsmodul Sprachwissenschaft. It complements the theoretical and methodological insights and skills in this area. The Übung will introduce and put to work techniques and approaches characteristic of English Linguistics and thereby help students to acquire competence in using specific sources of information and technologies as well as in collecting, analysing and visualizing their own empirical data. The topics treated will include aspects of academic writing (handling secondary literature, referencing), the analysis of linguistic corpora and other databases, the use of online dictionaries, the construction of questionnaires, the analysis of audio-recorded data, the interpretation of experiments, etc.
