Inhalt:

This course provides an introduction to the study of English and American literature. We will read and analyse a range of texts representative of the different genres: poetry, prose fiction and drama. A survey of selected approaches in literary theory will help to provide students with a firm foundation for analysing and interpreting literary texts. The class also provides a brief overview of English and American literary history. Throughout the course, unmarked assignments will be given to the participants. In the last session, an exam will be written.
The course is accompanied by two tutorials: one for exercises and enhanced discussions, and one introducing students to the library.

"In reality there is no kind of evidence or argument by which one can show that Shakespeare, or any other writer is 'good'. Nor is there any way of definitely proving that - for instance

• Warwick Deeping is 'bad'. Ultimately there is no test of literary merit except survival, which is itself an index to majority opinion." (George Orwell, “Lear, Tolstoy and the Fool”)Is it quite true what Orwell had to say about the literary canon? What is a literary classic and how did it enter the canon in the first place? What is a canon? Who or what defines a text as canonical and: have Western European societies always had a canon?

It is questions such as these we will tackle in the PS II "Canonical Texts". The seminar is aimed at students studying for Lehramt Gymnasium. We will begin by discussing the idea of 'canon' in the first three sessions (a reader will be provided). The following sessions will be concerned with the individual texts on the reading list. We will spend one half of each session on the text as such, the second half will be devoted to the history of its canonical status, i.e. we will ask (under the guidance of one of the students) how when and why the text became a classic.
The aim of this seminar is threefold: first, to introduce you to texts relevant for teaching in the Gymnasium; second, to discuss the shaping of the English or American canon with an eye on the (non)sense of teaching it at the Gymnasium; third, to prepare your first Hausarbeit..

Inhalt:

A nine-year old narrator named Oskar (complete with not tin drum but tambourine) and a middle-aged psychiatrist reflecting on the way we "normalize the terrible strangeness of inner life with a variety of convenient fictions" are the widely divergent protagonists of two recent American novels both exploring a less than coherent world in post 9/11 New York. Both texts attempt this via a typically post-modern mixture of documentary material and fiction that stretches the boundaries of the form. The seminar will give you a chance to get to know and discuss the most recent work of two celebrated young American authors tackling central topics of contemporary literary studies. It will also require your willingness and ability to work intensely with the texts themselves since not much criticism exists so far.

Inhalt:

Using Paul Gilroy's concept of the “Black Atlantic” as a starting point, this class will explore how the African diaspora from the mid-eighteenth century to the present is presented in literature and film. The texts studied in the course are mainly by African American and U.S. Caribbean authors and will be analyzed as products of shared cultural heritages and as responses to slavery, colonialism and racism.

Inhalt:

During her lifetime, Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896) published more than thirty books and many sketches and articles. Her best known work, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, had a deep impact on the way Americans viewed slavery and immensely benefited the abolition movement before the Civil War. In UTC as well as her other novels and prose essays, Stowe provided poignant analyses of the themes of family, domestic life, national identity, religion and social justice in the nineteenth century.

Please purchase copies of Uncle Tom’s Cabin and The Minster’s Wooing (Penguin edition). Additional texts, as for example Stowe’s “catholic” novel Agnes of Sorrento, will be made available either in a reader or as e-texts.
