Inhalt:

In his introduction to Promised Land: Thirteen Books that Changed America Jay Parini writes “this was never meant to be a list of the 'greatest' American books: not The Scarlet Letter, The Great Gatsby, or The Education of Henry Adams. […] I wanted books that shifted consciousness in some public fashion, however subtly, or opened fresh possibilities for the ways Americans lived their lives.” For this purpose, Parini selected a dozen and one books that in his opinion mattered for the birth and growth of the U.S., “books from the past containing ideas still true and relevant.”

In this class we will explore how literature effects change. For this purpose, we will focus on two conceptual frameworks: the idea of the U.S. as a “promised land,” and the role that literature plays in identity formation processes. After establishing a theoretical foundation with the help of essays and excerpts from standard reference texts, we will critically investigate the transformative power of literature. For our literary sources we will concentrate on the list created by Jay Parini, reading mostly excerpts from of the texts he discusses, as well as additional commentaries on these books. Two novels we will read in full: Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1851) and Jack Kerouac’s On the Road (1957).

All excerpts and essays will be provided on the Virtual Campus ahead of class. Students are, however, required to read the two novels and bring them to class – either in print or as an e-book.

Since we will deal with key issues of American Studies, the reading list is rather extensive and students are expected to come to class prepared. The class depends on two things: thorough reading and everyone’s participation in the discussions. Get ready, therefore, to confront and deal with your own prejudices, experiences, and expectations. The issues covered in this class are living issues, as they influence the lives of many – not only in American culture!

Inhalt:

Every list of all-time best directors includes the American filmmaker Stanley Kubrick. He has influenced generations of directors and changed the language of cinema with every film he made. Each work was unrepeatable, different from what came before, and impossible to imagine in the hands of another artist. Yet most of Kubrick’s films were adaptations of literary works. This class examines the films of Stanley Kubrick as masterpieces in a wide variety of genres (science-fiction, horror, comedy, film noir, war, history, and romance) as well as adaptations of such classics as Nabokov’s Lolita, Thackeray’s The Luck of Barry Lyndon, or Anthony Burgess’s dystopian novella A Clockwork Orange. We will devote close attention to Kubrick’s most ambitious film, the groundbreaking 2001: A Space Odyssey, as well as to his last, the largely underrated masterpiece Eyes Wide Shut, an adaptation of Arthur Schnitzler’s Traumnovelle, starring the (then-)celebrity duo of Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman.

By watching the films, consulting scholarly approaches, and parsing individual scenes in class discussions, we aim to understand the obsessively detailed, stylized art of Kubrick’s films, the painstaking architecture of his sets, and the relentless insistence on multiple takes that drove some of his actors insane and helped others gain better control of their craft. Indeed control will be a guiding motif in this seminar, as we look for the play behind the work: the levity, enjoyment, and visual pleasure of a Kubrick film, a one-of-a-kind brand in its own right. What do we learn about cinema from Kubrick’s work? And what has cinema learned from Stanley Kubrick?

Class readings will be distributed in advance. All films will be available on reserve. Purchase of a Kubrick Collection DVD set is optional.

Inhalt:

Pulp crime fiction during the first two decades after WWII wasn’t limited to male writers, and not every femme was fatale. This course will examine five crime novels by women (Dorothy Hughes, Margaret Millar, Evelyn Piper, Shirley Jackson, Patricia Highsmith), their takes on postwar America and the cultural issues associated with pulp fiction.

Inhalt:

This course is addressed at students who are preparing or working at a final thesis in American Literature or Culture, be it a "Magisterarbeit", "Zulassungsarbeit", "BA-Arbeit" or Master's thesis. It is supposed to offer continuous support to students while preparing or writing their theses, and to give them the opportunity to present and discuss their work with other students. The course consists of plenary and individual sessions. A definite schedule will be set up in the first meeting of the class. There will be a site on the Virtual Campus; access will be given upon registration.

In the plenary sessions, we shall discuss general formal aspects and criteria of a thesis - such as possible topics, structure, suitable theoretical approaches. Participants will present (parts of) their thesis, offering it for discussion and feedback. The individual sessions consist of one-to-one tutorials in which you can discuss the argument, the progress and possible problems of your thesis with me. For students in the BA, MA and new teacher training programmes, who write their thesis in literary studies, this course provides the "Betreuungsübung". The presentation of the thesis in a plenary session (max. 30 minutes) will be graded and counts as "mündliche Modulteilprüfung" in the BA-programme. Students in the Magister- and old teacher training programmes are advised to take this course to support them while writing their theses. Depending on the native tongue of the participants, the course will be given in English or German.

The course will take place every two weeks, with individual meetings in the weeks where we will have no common session. Our first meeting will take place on Monday, April 15, 2013. The sessions will take place in room U9/00.01, the office of Dr. Konopka.

Inhalt:

Since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2011, terrorism has been regarded as one of the most pressing issues of the twenty-first century. Yet American culture manifested an intense fascination with terrorism and a deep anguish about attacks on US soil as early as the 1960s. Besides a number of works inspired by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the root of terrorist themes in American literature and film lies in the Cold War, complicated in the final decades of the last century by involvements in the Middle East. This seminar traces the cultural history of this anxiety from typically Cold War or fascist threats to contemporary representations of Islamic terrorists in post-9/11 films and fictions. We focus especially on narratives from the perspective of terrorists or people perceived as such. Most of these are carrying out some form of suicide or imagine their acts as religiously-infused self-sacrifice. Do we understand their motives? Do they have any validity outside the terrorist mind? What aesthetic means are employed in portraying such radical interventions? Through an overview of very diverse texts, from blockbusters to small, independent productions and finally to Bollywood, we dissect the ethical issues raised by terror and the response to it: violence, faith, revenge, torture, and sympathy. The course is organized around the historical divide of September 11, which will help us determine the impact of that event for the understanding of terrorism in the United States.

Inhalt:

This course is designed specifically for students of all teaching degrees ("Lehrämter") who prepare for the 3-hour written "Staatsexamen" in American Literature according to the new LPO. However, students preparing other final exams - oral or written - are very welcome, too.

The "Repetitorum" is a class designed to assist students in their preparations for the final written exam. The class, however, does NOT substitute each student’s individual study time! During class, students will receive immediate feedback about their level of preparation for the final exam. The most important aim of this class, however, is to provide participants with a platform to discuss complex issues, rather than particular details of one certain topic. Once again: the class aims to assist students in their preparations, but it does NOT replace independent study!

The topics for this semester will be chosen by the class participants themselves during the first session.

Inhalt:

Friendship is a distinctly personal relationship that seems in many ways universal, yet it is also culturally and historically specific, and its implications are often deeply political. Both in Germany and the United States, notions of friendship have been affected by secularization and urbanization, by people s geographical and economic mobility, and by changing notions of gender, sexuality, race and the body; at the same time, friendship itself has been a productive cultural force that has kept challenging social and political boundaries. This seminar invites German and North American students, as well as students of Germanistik and Anglistik/Amerikanistik, to study each other s cultures together, focusing on the changing role friendship has played on either side of the Atlantic at different points in time.

We will begin our exploration with a survey of the parameters most commonly employed in philosophical and sociological attempts to distinguish friendship from love, parental care, or professional associations. For the main part of the seminar, we will compare German and American poems, letters, short stories and novels that address the transgressive, transformative power of friendship in particularly suggestive ways, and sound out the challenges individual friendships may have to face in oppressive social and political frameworks; topics will include the high-flying ideals of the romantic cult of friendship, the possibilities and limitations of interracial friendships, the roles of gender and race in friendships among white men in the 1950s and among black women in the 1960s, the politics of friendship in East Germany, and the tensions between friendship and erotic love.

Inhalt:

This course offers an introduction to key themes and methods in American cultural studies as an interdisciplinary field of inquiry. Thematically, we will explore issues such as religion and immigration, the frontier and regionalism, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, media and technology, America as nature’s nation and America and the world; conceptually, the focus will be on equality and difference as utopian ideas that have shaped American culture from colonial times to the present.
This course is designed to provide you with basic skills in American cultural studies, with a strong emphasis on reading and discussing various kinds of texts in their cultural contexts. Our primary readings will include short stories, poems and excerpts from novels as well as historical documents, essays, political speeches, photographs, popular songs and films, while several theoretical essays will provide us with a language for discussing changing concepts of culture.

Inhalt:

This course provides a concise introduction to major themes and methods in the study of English and American literature. We will discuss key features of the main literary genres poetry, prose fiction and drama, explore selected approaches in literary theory and criticism as a basis for analyzing and interpreting literary texts, and survey the main periods and developments of English and American literary history. The focus, however, will be on the discussion of textual examples from these various vantage points. The goal of this course is to enable you to articulate fresh readings of texts from different genres, in their cultural contexts, and informed by key theories and analytical methods.
Please note that the first tutorial will take place AFTER the first regular session!

Inhalt:

Studying American literature and culture would be incomplete without considering the wealth of African American perspectives. In this class we will discuss texts by African Americans and phenomena that are closely linked to their specific historical experiences. Our classroom material will include mostly literary texts, but also music, film, painting, sculpture, food etc. As the title of the seminar suggests, we will employ several of our senses to deal with the topic, which may also include an field trip to the museum. Since we will deal with one of the key issues of American Studies, the reading list of this class will be rather extensive and students are expected to come to class prepared for lively, critical discussions.

Inhalt:

As David Cochran notes in his study America Noir: Underground Writers and Filmmakers of the Postwar Era, in the 1950s and 60s modernism's oppositional tendencies were quickly co-opted by the cultural arbiters, that is, "the servants of the state." As a consequence, many of the significant writers and directors of the period went underground, into the disreputable genres of crime, science fiction, and horror.

This course focuses on four novels (The Killer Inside Me - Thompson, Beast in View Millar, The Crying of Lot 49 Pynchon, It Happened in Boston? Greenan) and four films (Angel Face Preminger, Bigger than Life Ray, Kiss Me Deadly Aldrich, The Birds Hitchcock) from a time "steeped in paranoia with humans at the mercy of vast forces beyond their control [. . .] a world both recognizable and frighteningly unfamiliar."

2. Anmeldung:

Dieses Tutorium begleitet den Kurs "Introduction to English and American Literature" von Nicole K. Konopka (Dienstag, 16-18 Uhr).
Es muss keine gesonderte Anmeldung für das Tutorium erfolgen! Die Anmeldung zur "Introduction to English and American Literature" erfolgt in Flexnow (Fristen siehe entsprechenden Univis-Eintrag) und schließt die Anmeldung zum Tutorium mit ein.

Inhalt:

Das Tutorium begleitet den Kurs "Introduction to English and American Literature C" (Nicole K. Konopka) und dient der Vertiefung der hier besprochenen Themen sowie der Übung anhand ausgewählter Texte.

Zusätzlich ist das zweiteilige Bibliothekstutorium "Einführung in die Benutzung und den Katalog der Universitätsbibliothek" zu belegen. (Eintrag über den Virtuellen Campus. Siehe auch Schwarzes Brett in der U9/Erdgeschoß sowie Website Amerikanistik, unter "News").
