Inhalt:

Transformation characterizes migrations, and the Irish migratory process left an abundant record of political, economic, and socio-cultural metamorphoses. This course focuses on Ireland's past interactions and ongoing legacy in the North American landscape. Focusing on Irish immigration during the 19th century and its interactions with the United States and Canada, we will study the mutual consequences of this transatlantic movement, which shaped and transformed both the host cultures and Ireland.

Our resources are plentiful: in addition to scholarship, we will draw on novels, plays, oral accounts, music, film and art. This material allows students to explore themes that defined and mythologized “Irishness” as a vital part of American identity in the 19th and 20th centuries, while simultaneously categorizing "the Irish" as a distinct group.

In order to contextualize the many sources, we will identify historical trends of Ireland, the United States and Canada, focusing on the migratory patterns between and among these countries. Literary analysis highlights tropes that expressed Irish, Irish-American and American perceptions and stereotypes. Cultural analysis reveals Irish intersections with American political and economic images, the perception of Irish characteristics in an increasingly hierarchical class structure, and Irish influences in the literary and artistic canon as well as in the entertainment and fashion industries.

All course material (except for the novels) will be provided well ahead of class via the Virtual Campus. It is important for participants to complete the assigned reading so that they can contribute meaningfully to class discussions. Students are welcome to bring in additional material, for example advertising campaigns and other relevant artifacts, and to plan classroom activities such as structured debates and facilitated discussion. This is an interactive class in which participant input is welcome.

In addition to the course program, the American Studies Section will offer an optional 5-day field trip to Dublin in September 2014, with a maximum of 12 participants – preferably, but not exclusively, students from this class. The Department of English and American Studies will fund a substantial portion of this field study. Nonetheless, students who are selected will pay a fee of 450 Euros in advance and must be enrolled at the University of Bamberg at the time of the excursion.

„All water has a perfect memory and is forever trying to get back to where it was.“ (Toni Morrison, Beloved)

In this seminar, we will explore the significance of nature in African American literature. Looking at the complex cultural contexts and literary traditions of African Americans, we will not only try to explain the prominence of nature in black literature, but also discuss the ways in which literary representations of race and the natural environment are related in texts from different time periods and different genres. As a theoretical basis, this seminar will introduce you to a number of key questions and concepts of environmental literary and cultural criticism, or “ecocriticism.”
With Zora Neale Hurston, Toni Morrison and Octavia Butler, we will encounter three of America’s most influential and most important authors. Their novels are well known for their extraordinary perspectives on the land and on people’s changing relationships to America’s flora and fauna, and provide a rich introduction to the various ways in which African American (women’s) literature has imagined the natural world.

Students must have read all three novels before the first class. Additional material will be provided via the Virtual Campus (VC). Please check your e-mails regularly for further instructions.

Inhalt:

This course is addressed at students who are preparing or working at a final thesis in American Literature or Culture, be it a "Magisterarbeit", "Zulassungsarbeit", "BA-Arbeit" or Master's thesis. It is supposed to offer continuous support to students while preparing or writing their theses, and to give them the opportunity to present and discuss their work with other students. The course consists of plenary and individual sessions. A definite schedule will be set up in the first meeting of the class. There will be a site on the Virtual Campus; access will be given upon registration.

In the plenary sessions, we shall discuss general formal aspects and criteria of a thesis - such as possible topics, structure, suitable theoretical approaches. Participants will present (parts of) their thesis, offering it for discussion and feedback. The individual sessions consist of one-to-one tutorials in which you can discuss the argument, the progress and possible problems of your thesis with me. For students in the BA, MA and new teacher training programmes, who write their thesis in literary studies, this course provides the "Betreuungsübung". The presentation of the thesis in a plenary session (max. 30 minutes) will be graded and counts as "mündliche Modulteilprüfung" in the BA-programme. Students in the Magister- and old teacher training programmes are advised to take this course to support them while writing their theses. Depending on the native tongue of the participants, the course will be given in English or German.

The course will take place every two weeks, with individual meetings in the weeks where we will have no common session. Our first meeting will take place in the first week of the semester.

The discussions will be kept informal throughout. Presentations of topics will not be graded.

At the end of the semester participants will take an oral exam on the topic of their thesis (20 to 30 minutes, a bit more formal than the weekly meetings). This will count as the grade for the "mündliche Modulteilprüfung" in the BA-program.

In addition to the sessions, each participant will work out a schedule for the submission of thesis drafts to the instructor. Detailed feedback will be given in writing. Unless otherwise agreed, draft sections are due every four weeks.

Other students planning to write their thesis at a later point or are simply interested in lively debates on various research topics and fields are of course welcome to join us.

Inhalt:

This course is designed specifically for students of all teaching degrees ("Lehrämter") who prepare for the 3-hour written "Staatsexamen" in American Literature according to the new LPO. However, students preparing other final exams - oral or written - are very welcome, too.

The "Repetitorum" is a class designed to assist students in their preparations for the final written exam. The class, however, does NOT substitute each student’s individual study time! During class, students will receive immediate feedback about their level of preparation for the final exam. The most important aim of this class, however, is to provide participants with a platform to discuss complex issues, rather than particular details of one certain topic. Once again: the class aims to assist students in their preparations, but it does NOT replace independent study!

The topics for this semester will be chosen by the class participants themselves during the first session.

Inhalt:

The short story is often seen as the quintessential American genre, a national art form (Frank O Connor). And indeed, it emerged when American writers were deeply invested in creating an independent literary tradition, while readers were curious to hear about their country s diverse cultures. Yet what happens if we read American stories next to German short fiction, variously called Novelle, Erzählung, or Geschichte? It turns out that both not only developed at the same historical moment, but also share a number of thematic, formal, and stylistic features. At the same time, the comparison highlights incongruities and culturally significant differences, especially in terms of tensions between regional and national identities, the role of the natural environment, representations of racial and ethnic diversity, and the impact of class structures on shifting notions of gender. Finally, it seems that German and American short stories have talked back and forth across the Atlantic for almost 200 years from the perhaps obvious links between the gothic tales of E.T.A. Hoffmann and those of Edgar Allen Poe (and their surprising revival in the stories of post-Wende author Ingo Schulze) to the intersections between the innovative feminist stories of science fiction star Joanna Russ and Christa Wolf. Overall, this comparative seminar is designed specifically for students interested in the exchange between German and American cultures who major in English or Germanistik.

Inhalt:

This seminar examines important slave narratives written in the nineteenth century, neo-slave narratives arising in the post-Civil Rights era, and two recent cinematic slave narratives. Slave narratives do more than simply recount the story from slavery to freedom (and sometimes the other way around) or the escape from the South to the North. Above all, they dramatize the journey of black American writers toward literacy and public speaking and document the complex relationship between black writers and their white editors. They also draw attention to issues of authorship, life writing, historiography, and gender, while modern revisions of the genre are often marked by controversy around appropriation and display a wide range of unconventional approaches to the individual and collective trauma of slavery in America.

The course consists of three parts. First, we analyze the conventions and stylistic tropes that define the slave narrative genre and explore how some writers negotiated and interrogated these norms. The central texts are A Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass (1845), Twelve Years a Slave, Narrative of Solomon Northup (1853), William and Ellen Craft’s Running a Thousand Miles for Freedom (1860), and Harriet Ann Jacobs’s Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl (1861). Especially the tensions between fictionalized narrative and autobiographical form shed light on the function of these narratives in the abolitionist struggle.

Second, we focus on William Styron’s controversial The Confessions of Nat Turner (1967), along with fictions that seek to faithfully recreate the slavery experience and restore agency and subjectivity for enslaved individuals. Octavia Butler’s science fiction novel Kindred (1979) and Toni Morrison’s Beloved (1987) demonstrate how the neo-slave narrative reflects the difficulty of finding a literary language to represent the horrors of slavery. These and other works, as we shall see, also raise questions about resistance within the slave community, as well as more broadly about the plight of female slaves, about literacy, memory, and violence. Edward P. Jones’s more recent The Known World (2003) will be especially intriguing for its depiction of black slaveholders and its postmodern narrative strategies.

Finally, we will discuss Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained (2012) and Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave (2013) to compare depictions of slavery from the perspective of a white director (Tarantino) vs. a black artist and filmmaker (McQueen). What exactly distinguishes Tarantino’s postmodern, spaghetti Western take on the slave narrative from McQueen’s vividly sensorial, authentic, and yet subtly stylized account of Solomon Northup’s abduction into slavery? Key issues here are the aesthetics of visualizing violence, cinematic excess, restraint, and empathy, but also the larger question of how we relate to the slave narrative genre today, what position it occupies in the field of African-American literature and culture, and how increasingly gruesome images of the atrocity of slavery help reorient historical narratives about slaves and slave-owners, and their cultural legacy in the present.

Students are encouraged to do as much of the class reading as possible during the spring break. In addition to watching the two films, which is obligatory, each student is expected to read TWO classic slave narratives and TWO neo-slave narratives from the list below. We will discuss all of them in class, but only four novels in total, of your own choice, are required reading. Needless to say, feel free to read all the assigned materials if your schedule allows it!

Rather than make traditional presentations, students will practice their interactive oral skills by moderating the sessions on the novels they have read: proving background information, plot quizzes, and study questions for the class.

Inhalt:

This course offers an introduction to key themes and methods in American cultural studies as an interdisciplinary field of inquiry. Thematically, we will explore issues such as religion and immigration, the frontier and regionalism, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, media and technology, America as nature’s nation and America and the world; conceptually, the focus will be on equality and difference as utopian ideas that have shaped American culture from colonial times to the present.

This course is designed to provide you with basic skills in American cultural studies, with a strong emphasis on reading and discussing various kinds of texts in their cultural contexts. Our primary readings will include short stories, poems and excerpts from novels as well as historical documents, essays, political speeches, photographs, popular songs and films, while several theoretical essays will provide us with a language for discussing changing concepts of culture.

The final exam will take place from 12-2 p.m. on Monday, July 14th, 2014.

Inhalt:

This course provides a concise introduction to major themes and methods in the study of English and American literature. We will discuss key features of the main literary genres poetry, prose fiction and drama, explore selected approaches in literary theory and criticism as a basis for analyzing and interpreting literary texts, and survey the main periods and developments of English and American literary history. The focus, however, will be on the discussion of textual examples from these various vantage points. The goal of this course is to enable you to articulate fresh readings of texts from different genres, in their cultural contexts, and informed by key theories and analytical methods.
Please note that the first tutorial will take place AFTER the first regular session!

Inhalt:

The lecture is designed to provide an overview of North America’s literary and cultural history from the 1880s till today – focusing on Realism, Naturalism, Modernism and Post-Modernism. For each of these periods, major developments in America’s cultural and intellectual history will be discussed in conjunction with stylistic, thematic and conceptual developments in American literature.

Structurally, I emphasize the analysis of particularly poignant textual examples to show how Americans imagined their culture and their continent at certain moments of time; how they sought to define themselves against what happened in the past and in Europe; and how in form and content, their poems, essays, short stories, plays and novels have charted new directions for the relationship between literature and culture. Conceptually, the focus is on the process of modernization and on the ideal of democratization as two of American literature’s major driving forces.

Complementary to the lecture, the department offers a facultative one-hour Reading Course (Leseübung) in which short texts or short excerpts from a longer text that were mentioned in the lecture are discussed in more detail. This reading course caters to students of all semesters interested in deepening their knowledge of key texts from the reading list. It is highly recommended for all students who write the lecture exam or who are preparing for final exams.

Inhalt:

This lecture introduces students to the origins, impact, and ongoing evolution of the phenomenon known as Quality TV. We will examine the emergence of the medium as a whole over time and consider selected series in detail. The central question we will ask is what defines TV “quality” (psychology, grittiness, ambiguity, pretentiousness?), how this quality comes into being, and how TV series reflect their own artistic ambitions. Most examples on the syllabus are American, although we also include UK and Australian productions.

The lecture has a threefold purpose: (1) it reads TV series as products of specific cultural contexts; (2) it provides an in-depth analysis of complex TV narrative in relation to other genres and media such as the novel, along with serial forms of literary adaptation; and (3) it employs theoretical concepts to unpack various forms of seriality, asking how individual series reflect and formally embody serial aesthetics. The epic sweep of full-fledged series is contrasted with the less operatic arc of miniseries to discover the experimental possibilities of Quality TV in relation to serial duration and scale.

Beyond historical and formal factors, we also explore the reception of Quality TV, fan communities, the addictive potential of the serial experience, its impact on how we perceive and consume other media such as cinema, literature, or video games, and the ways it shapes the episodic nature of personal experience. Students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the series listed on the syllabus (watch enough episodes to contribute an informed opinion), attend the weekly sessions regularly, and participate in a class blog.
