Inhalt:

This course is addressed at students who are preparing or working at a final thesis in American Literature or Culture, be it a "Magisterarbeit", "Zulassungsarbeit", "BA-Arbeit" or Master's thesis. It is supposed to offer continuous support to students while preparing or writing their theses, and to give them the opportunity to present and discuss their work with other students. The course consists of plenary and individual sessions. A definite schedule will be set up in the first meeting of the class. There will be a site on the Virtual Campus; access will be given upon registration.

In the plenary sessions, we shall discuss general formal aspects and criteria of a thesis - such as possible topics, structure, suitable theoretical approaches. Participants will present (parts of) their thesis, offering it for discussion and feedback. The individual sessions consist of one-to-one tutorials in which you can discuss the argument, the progress and possible problems of your thesis with me. For students in the BA, MA and new teacher training programmes, who write their thesis in literary studies, this course provides the "Betreuungsübung". The presentation of the thesis in a plenary session (max. 30 minutes) will be graded and counts as "mündliche Modulteilprüfung" in the BA-programme. Students in the Magister- and old teacher training programmes are advised to take this course to support them while writing their theses. Depending on the native tongue of the participants, the course will be given in English or German.

The course will take place every two weeks, with individual meetings in the weeks where we will have no common session. Our first meeting will take place in the first week of the semester.

Inhalt:

This course offers an introduction to key themes and methods in American cultural studies as an interdisciplinary field of inquiry. Thematically, we will explore issues such as religion and immigration, the frontier and regionalism, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, media and technology, America as nature’s nation and America and the world; conceptually, the focus will be on equality and difference as utopian ideas that have shaped American culture from colonial times to the present.
This course is designed to provide you with basic skills in American cultural studies, with a strong emphasis on reading and discussing various kinds of texts in their cultural contexts. Our primary readings will include short stories, poems and excerpts from novels as well as historical documents, essays, political speeches, photographs, popular songs and films, while several theoretical essays will provide us with a language for discussing changing concepts of culture.

Empfohlene Literatur:

All readings will be available via the Virtual Campus at the beginning of the semester.

Inhalt:

This course is designed specifically for students of all teaching degrees ("Lehrämter") who prepare for the 3-hour written "Staatsexamen" in American Literature according to the new LPO. However, students preparing other final exams - oral or written - are very welcome, too.

The "Repetitorum" is a class designed to assist students in their preparations for the final written exam. The class, however, does NOT substitute each student’s individual study time! During class, students will receive immediate feedback about their level of preparation for the final exam. The most important aim of this class, however, is to provide participants with a platform to discuss complex issues, rather than particular details of one certain topic. Once again: the class aims to assist students in their preparations, but it does NOT replace independent study!

The topics for this semester will be chosen by the class participants themselves during the first session.

Inhalt:

Barack Obama has returned oratory once considered integral to republican governance to a level of cultural effectiveness not seen since the 1960s. This course will deal half with the U.S. rhetorical tradition and half with Obama s skillful use of it. In the first half, we will review the rhetorical constructions of a national we in the works of Thomas Jefferson (the Declaration of Independence, draft and final form); James Madison (Federalist X); the speeches and writings of Abraham Lincoln (perhaps Obama s most important influence as a prose stylist), and Martin Luther King, Jr.; we will also consider examples of the jeremiad (Frederick Douglass Fourth of July address, Malcolm X s The Ballot or the Bullet ), a genre from which Obama has pointedly distanced himself. In the second half, we will consider Dreams from my Father (a major work), bits of The Audacity of Hope (more of a careful politician s book), and, most of all, Obama s speeches, especially but not only those from the 2008 campaign.

As is appropriate for a course that draws on rhetoric, cultural studies, American studies, and political science, among other fields, our critical methodology will be eclectic, ranging, for example, from Aristotelian rhetoric to Habermas notion of the public sphere to critical race theory to gender studies to psychoanalytic theory to work in American studies by such scholars as Donald Pease, Dana Nelson, Lauren Berlant, Eric Lott, and Garry Wills. Because German students find themselves deeply immersed in U.S. popular culture but sometimes relatively unexposed to U.S. public culture, the course is broadly intended as a critical, but not cynical, introduction to the latter.

Inhalt:

Can I go see anything pleasant, like an execution or a dissection? This ironic question was put forth by writer Fanny Fern in 1859 in order to draw attention to the fact that women were still largely excluded from the public sphere and the medical professions. In the second half of the nineteenth century a growing number of women entered the public realms of education and the workplace (including the medical professions). This social, political, and medical development was mirrored in writing both by and for women. This seminar explores the intersections between medicine and gender in North-American literature and culture. We will analyze the representation of women nurses and doctors from historical, cultural, and literary points of view from the second half of the nineteenth century until the end of the twentieth. Topics addressed in this seminar include: The Sentimental Nurse Narrative in Wesley Bradshaw s Angel Agnes (1873) and Mattie Stephenson (1873); the representation of Civil War nursing in Louisa May Alcott s Hospital Sketches (1863); the representation of women doctors in the writings of Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, William Dean Howells and Sarah Orne Jewett; women and health in the Spanish-American War; the representation of the Vietnam War nurse in Lynda Van Devanter s autobiography Home Before Morning (1983) and Diane Carlson Evans s Vietnam Women s Memorial; the cinematic eye: women nurses in World Wars I and II in A Farewell to Arms (1932) and The English Patient (1996).

Course requirements: in-class participation, presentation, and research paper (15-20 pages).

The interdisciplinary nature of this seminar will be underscored by the collaboration of students from the University of Bamberg and the University of Regensburg on projects dealing with medicine, gender and American Studies. Students will also be asked to participate in a final student conference.

Inhalt:

This course provides a concise introduction to major themes and methods in the study of English and American literature. We will discuss key features of the main literary genres poetry, prose fiction and drama, explore selected approaches in literary theory and criticism as a basis for analyzing and interpreting literary texts, and survey the main periods and developments of English and American literary history. The focus, however, will be on the discussion of textual examples from these various vantage points. The goal of this course is to enable you to articulate fresh readings of texts from different genres, in their cultural contexts, and informed by key theories and analytical methods.

If the 20th century has sometimes been called “The American Century”, it can certainly be called “The Century of American Poetry”. During the 19th century, American poetry frequently followed older British models and remained relatively conventional in form and content (poets like Walt Whitman or Emily Dickinson being notable exceptions). In the first decades of the 20th century, however, and with the advent of Modernism, American poetry became a significant force of both literary innovation and social commentary: “Poetry is not only dream and vision; it is the skeleton architecture of our lives. It lays the foundations for a future of change, a bridge across our fears of what has never been before.” (Audre Lorde)

In this course we are going to trace major developments of US-American poetry in the 20th century by focusing on poems about the city, a space that brings to the fore issues of race and class as well as of gender and sexuality. We will begin with modernist poetry of the 1920s and 30s, and the powerful evocations of London and Chicago by American writers like Ezra Pound and Carl Sandburg, comparing them to the depictions of New York by poets of the Harlem Renaissance like Langston Hughes and Claude McKay. In a second step, we will turn to the post-war period, examining The Beats of San Francisco and the so-called New York School of poetry. In the third section of the course, we will read city poetry written during different social movements of the 1960s, 70s and 80s by poets involved with the Black Arts Movement, the Feminist Movement as well as the Chicano/a Movement.

In order to explore American poetry about the city published in the 1990s and 2000s, and instead of having presentations during the term, students are expected to prepare a short, conference-style paper for one of the last two or three sessions of the course. In these final presentations, each student will be asked to discuss one city poem by a poet of his/her choice and to present an argument about this text that may be developed into a final paper.

Empfohlene Literatur:

As a general work of reference on poetry and its forms, aesthetics, groups and movements, on poetic devices and rhetorical terms common in American poetry, and on the critical terms common in poetry scholarship, you should get a copy of Edward Hirsch’s A Poet’s Glossary (Houghton Mifflin, 2014). To those of you who want to prepare by reading some poetry during the semester break, I recommend that you have a look at the The Norton Anthology of Modern and Contemporary Poetry (2003), edited by Jahan Ramazani, or similar anthologies available in the library.

Please purchase the following two books, both available as part of the inexpensive Pocket Poets Series published by City Lights Books (less than 7 Euros each):

Inhalt:

This interdisciplinary course has been designed especially for US-American and Canadian exchange students and German students, inviting them to study each other’s cultures together. This semester, we will focus on animal protagonists and narrators in North-American and German writing and culture, present and past. We will study texts in which animals are attributed with human emotions and motivations and speak their mind about issues of cultural, political and sociological relevance. One central question of this class is how anthropomorphist ascriptions reflect literary and ideological developments, and how the author/creator’s choice to use an animal narrator affects the significance of the cultural artefact in question. We will also try to determine how North American and German cultures have used the animal’s voice differently, thus claiming and maintaining cultural diversity and possibly even independence through art.

Since animal narrators have been “voicing” their concerns for over 3.000 years now, we have quite a vast body of works at our disposal. We will, however, focus mostly on texts of US American, Canadian and German origin. Our “reading list” will include novels, short stories, poems, illustrations, movies, cartoon strips and even musical pieces. Students are asked to read two novels in advance, meaning: before class starts in October. Those texts will form the background for most of our discussions, but additional reading will be required during the semester.

Note: Readings and classroom discussions will be both in English and German. All course material (except for the novels) will be provided well ahead of class via the Virtual Campus. Make sure that you order your copy of the books well in advance! It is important for participants to do the assigned reading, attend class regularly and contribute to class discussions. You are welcome to bring in materials from outside of class (newspaper articles, handouts etc.) and you can also plan class room activities – e.g. mock debates. Your input will be welcome!

What started in the mid-1950s as a small circle of unpublished friends soon became known as America’s first major Cold War literary movement, and as one of the most successful free speech movements in American literature. The Beat generation forever changed their country’s ideas about what literature–and poetry in particular–can do. Loosely associated with the time’s jazz rhythms, with underground drug cultures and the proliferation of Eastern spirituality, the Beats have become a symbol for the protest movements of the younger generation of the 1950s, 60s and beyond.

This seminar will focus on a broad selection of the Beats’ novels, stories, poems, and other works, including their achievements in the visual arts. We will discuss the most well-known writers of the group—Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, Gary Snyder and Lawrence Ferlinghetti—as well as texts by celebrated feminist Beat poet Diane Di Prima, by Amiri Baraka, who was closely affiliated with the Beats in his early years, and by Charles Bukowski, who was never part of the actual Beat circle but whose texts share some of their overall features and are read by many Beat enthusiasts. The overall Beat environment will be covered as well, most notably the socio-economic, post-war setting and the literary roots that inspired the Beats and the jazz/bebop ties. In particular, their way of leading a non-conformist live and their attacks on materialism, militarism, consumerism and conformity will be observed more closely, focusing on the issues of sexuality and drugs, friendship and travelling.

Kerouac’s On the Road should be read before the beginning of the class. All other texts will be provided in time via the Virtual Campus.

In the Virtual Campus you will also find the topics for the oral presentations. Please choose a topic and sign in on the respective topic. You will choose one topic, which you should discuss for approximately ten minutes in class with focus on one thesis concerning the text, as well as a shorter introduction to a literary phenomenon or period, which should be on a different day from your thesis-presentation. Inhalt:: The major American fiction of the mid-nineteenth century has little to say about the everyday experiences of ordinary Americans. While the lofty Transcendentalism of Emerson, Thoreau, and Whitman focused on the potential for greatness of every individual, another, more subversive subset of American Romanticism doubted these qualities and mined instead the murky depths of the human psyche. The leading “Dark Romantics,” Poe, Hawthorne, and Melville, subscribed to a sinister aesthetic—what Melville called “the power of blackness”—that continues to resonate in US culture to this day. Relinquishing all faith in human nature, they created characters that illustrate the propensity of humanity for evil, hubris, unbridled passion, and unrestrained violence. Adultery, incest, and murder uncover a world marked by moral conflicts, ambiguities, and a profound pessimism about the human capacity for redemption. In this scenario nature turns malevolent; dwellings are decrepit and haunted; relationships transgress social norms in ways that inevitably lead to gruesome perdition. People succumb to delusions that mock the Emersonian ideal of self-reform.

We will study this fascinating body of literature first by reading the most ghoulish, guilt-ridden stories of Edgar Allan Poe; two of Hawthorne’s short stories, “The Minister’s Black Veil” and “Young Goodman Brown,” along with his novel The Scarlet Letter (1850), all of which explore Puritan notions of sin and natural depravity; then Melville’s shorter works “Bartleby the Scrivener” and “Benito Cereno,” where dark romantic themes attach to specific social and historical settings (Wall Street and a slave rebellion on a merchant ship).

The core of the seminar is Melville’s sublime rebuttal of Transcentalist myth in his controversial and aptly titled novel Pierre: or, The Ambiguities (1852). We will read the novel alongside Pola X, its 1999 screen adaptation by French director Leos Carax. Pola X transplants Melville’s story of incest and mysticism into a contemporary setting that uses the aesthetics of Dark Romanticism to stress class tensions, the harsh realities of immigration, and the collapse of social empathy. With its young stars already tragically dead, everything about this film embodies the pessimism of Melville’s novel. And like Pierre, Pola X was (inexplicably) a critical failure.

In other quarters, however, revisiting the unholy anxieties of Dark Romanticism has captivated audiences and critics alike. We conclude by identifying the hypnotic styles and eerie moods of dark romantic fiction in American cinema and television, from David Fincher’s 1995 thriller Se7en, Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow and Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut, both released, like Pola X, in 1999, to the occult “Black Lodge” in David Lynch’s Twin Peaks and the nihilistic musings of Rust Cohle on the insubstantiality of human experience as “sentient meat” in HBO’s Southern gothic drama True Detective.

Inhalt:: Gegenstand des Seminars ist das filmische Schaffen des US-amerikanischen Regisseurs, Drehbuchautors und Filmproduzenten italienischer Abstammung Martin Scorsese, der ohne Zweifel zu den bedeutendsten Filmemachern seiner Generation zählt und mit unterschiedlichen Genres erfolgreich wurde: Gangsterfilm, Musical, Thriller, Biopic, Musikfilm, Dokumentation, Melodram und Kinderfilm. Mehr als das Werk anderer Regisseure sind die Filme Martin Scorseses bestimmt durch ein Oszillieren zwischen Kontinuitäten und Brüchen. Doch genau diese Fluktuation spiegelt exemplarisch die politischen und kulturellen Schwankungen der US-amerikanischen Gesellschaft in der Zeit unmittelbar nach dem Vietnamkrieg bis hin zur Finanzkrise 2008. Verschiedene Schwerpunkte können dabei fokussiert werden: Mafia, Einwanderung, katholische Moral, Kriminalität und Verbrechen, urbane Lebenswelten, soziale Abgrenzung, Einsamkeit und Obsession, Gewalt und Männlichkeit, Geld und Gier, weiblicher Masochismus, Ruhm und Showbiz. Im Seminar soll herausgearbeitet werden, wie der düstere Anti-Spielberg diese Themen in seinen Filmen immer wieder aufgreift und modifiziert. Aus der Fülle des Korpus (Scorsese hat 53 Filme gedreht) sind für die eingehende Analyse folgende Werke ausgewählt worden, die den Bogen von Literaturverfilmung und Remake über die bekannten, in Zusammenarbeit mit Robert De Niro entstandenen Monumentalwerke der 70er und 80er Jahre bis zur neueren Partnerschaft mit Leonardo DiCaprio spannen:

Was macht einen Scorsese-Film aus? Nicht nur eine packende Inszenierung, temporeiche Dialoge und ein sensibler Umgang mit Musik, sondern vor allem eine düstere gesellschaftskritische Skepsis gegenüber dem amerikanischen Traum, der nur noch Neurosen und Aggression in seinen desillusionierten Anhängern, sowohl in der Machtelite als auch in sozial deklassierten Schichten, hervorzurufen vermag. Im Zuge einer intensiven Erarbeitung filmästhetischer Aspekte in den ausgewählten Werken wird sich das Seminar darauf konzentrieren, die narrative Leichtigkeit der Filme zu hinterfragen und Ambivalenzen vor allem im Erzählen von Gewalt und Obsession sichtbar zu machen. Hierzu werden wir uns einerseits mit filmtheoretischen Grundlagen und zum anderen mit klassischen Perspektiven auf die US-amerikanische Kultur, beispielsweise mit Hinblick auf Ethnizität und sozialen Aufstieg, auseinandersetzen. Ziel ist es, unter Einbezug unterschiedlicher Forschungsansätze die subtilen Kontinuitäten des Oeuvres Scorseses von Travis Bickle bis Jordan Belfort zu reflektieren und an den Filmen selbst zu erproben. Den Abschluss des Seminars bildet die Analyse ausgewählter Beispiele für Scorseses Wirkung auf das Filmwerk unterschiedlicher Regisseure, von Quentin Tarantino und Spike Lee bis Paul Thomas Anderson und David O. Russell.

Inhalt:

American literature is full of strong and willful women, who conquer and claim, suffer and survive. This class will follow their trail through US-American literary history and trace their literary footsteps in the quicksand of a heavily gendered industry and culture. For our central reading we will focus on four classic American novels, featuring female protagonists in a variety of historical contexts. Additionally, we will read several short stories and poems that also highlight the role of the female protagonist and voice in American literary history.

Note: This class is a reading exercise (Leseübung), designed to assist you in working through the reading list. Therefore, participants are expected to read a lot. All course material (except for the novels) will be provided well ahead of class via the Virtual Campus. It is important for participants to do the assigned reading, attend class regularly and contribute to class discussions. You are welcome to bring in materials from outside of class (newspaper articles, handouts etc.) and you can also plan class room activities – e.g. mock debates. Your input will be welcome!

Inhalt:: America's greatest contribution to world culture is undoubtedly its music. This lecture seeks to outline the soundtrack of American history and culture in the long twentieth century. The music of the United States is incredibly diverse and bears the imprint of multiple traditions. The lecture provides a survey of popular genres including 1920s gospel music, blues, soul, jazz, country, rhythm and blues, pop, punk, rock and roll, rap, and hip-hop. We want to understand the sound of specific genres, but also the distinctive styles of regional musical centers such as New Orleans, Detroit, Austin, Nashville, or Los Angeles, as well as the rich history of famous record labels (Sun Records, Motown, and Stax), which were key for the racial integration of popular music in America.

Music genres evolve from political tensions and social trends, so we will examine the links between folk revival and 1960s counterculture, gospel music and the Civil Rights Movement, and Bruce Springsteen's role in portraying post-industrial America. The structure of the lecture will reflect the diversity of the material. Some sessions will focus on influential or unique artists (Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Patti Smith, Janis Joplin, R.E.M, Nirvana, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Frank Zappa, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Tupac Shakur, Tom Waits, Fiona Apple, Janelle Monáe), others on political and social commentary. One session will chart the best in American movie soundtracks, and at least one more will explain music styles, techniques, and terminologies. Throughout the lecture we will draw on our literary and media skills to interpret musical composition, performance, and text. We will also approach the material thematically, by looking into the impact of drug culture on American music and the legacy of war.
