Inhalt:

For a long time, Arab Americans have been labeled the “invisible minority,” considered as ‘White’ in the national census, but as ‘Other’ by many of their fellow citizens. In the aftermath of 9/11, however, Arab Americans became hyper-visible and consequently had to put up with new challenges.

In this course, we will discuss contemporary Arab American writing and the various issues it confronts. Among these are not only the immigrant’s struggle to arrive and adapt to the United States, but also gender relations, stereotyping and racism, politics, and, after 9/11, terrorism and the anti-Arab backlash it has triggered. Reading and analyzing the texts selected for this course will give us a chance to explore the issues that currently matter to the Arab American community. It will also allow us to gain new insights regarding the wider social and political changes in the U.S. portrayed in novels and short stories by Arab American writers with diverse ethnic, cultural, and religious backgrounds.

The authors’ literary engagement with American society and its discontents will be supplemented by selected secondary readings. Through these secondary texts, we will deepen our understanding of the primary works, for example by exploring the history of Arab American immigration to the U.S. or by engaging with the arguments of different scholarly analyses of the literary texts.

Empfohlene Literatur:

All reading material will be available in the Semesterapparat of the library well ahead of class. Students are, however, encouraged to buy the paperback editions of the relevant books, and are required to read all the relevant material well before class so they can contribute to the discussion, especially since this course is a Blockseminar.

Inhalt:

For several centuries, American literature has been characterized by its rather outspoken, and often highly controversial, treatment of issues of stigmatization and discrimination. This class will look at different types of stigmatization and discrimination and their changing presence in American literature, ranging from issues of gender and political interest to those of illness and physical appearance. We will read American texts from various historical moments that either express ideas of stigmatization and discrimination, or criticize and subvert those ideas (or do both at the same time).
For our central readings we will focus on four classic American novels and plays whose protagonists are fighting or promoting stigma and discrimination. In addition, we will read and discuss several short stories and poems that also refer to these issues, as well as shorter excerpts from other novels.

Note: This class is a reading exercise (Leseübung), designed to assist you in working through the reading list. Therefore, participants are expected to read a lot. Material will be provided well ahead of class via the Virtual Campus. It is important for participants to do the assigned reading, attend class regularly and contribute to class discussions.

Inhalt:

This course introduces students to American photography in the context of American cultural history. We will explore the development of photographic practices, styles and genres together with photography’s evolving technical possibilities and its often overlapping and contradictory social functions: from early scientific portraits to 21st-century post-photography, from the daguerreotype to digital images, and from documentary medium to avant-garde art form. As a basis for our discussions, we will read a number of theoretical texts that invite us to rethink photography’s complex relationship to technology, documentation, science, high art and mass culture, offering fresh perspectives on the role of the subject, the gaze, the real, epistemology and ethics. For the main part of this class, we will study the works of individual photographers and schools of photography in conjunction with key cultural events and dynamics, such as the American civil war, the westward expansion, the great depression, the civil rights movement, 9/11, and globalization.

Required Reading:
You will need your own copy of Miles Orvell’s American Photography (Oxford History of Art Series), which will be our textbook for the entire class; I highly recommend ordering the book as soon as possible, via amazon or your local bookstore. Additional material will be made available via the VC.
Since this is a block seminar, students will have to come to class discussion-ready: please read and annotate all the texts, and look at all images carefully (Orvell and VC); take notes and formulate questions; and bring your annotated readings, images, notes, and questions to class, ready to contribute to our conversation.

Students signed up for this class will receive an email before the beginning of the term with a list of topics from which they will choose a topic for their Referat. Referate will be given on the first and second weekend.

Inhalt:

This course is addressed at students who are preparing or working at a final thesis in American Literature or Culture, be it a "Magisterarbeit", "Zulassungsarbeit", "BA-Arbeit" or Master's thesis. It is supposed to offer continuous support to students while preparing or writing their theses, and to give them the opportunity to present and discuss their work with other students. The course consists of plenary and individual sessions. A definite schedule will be set up in the first meeting of the class. There will be a site on the Virtual Campus; access will be given upon registration.

In the plenary sessions, we shall discuss general formal aspects and criteria of a thesis - such as possible topics, structure, suitable theoretical approaches. Participants will present (parts of) their thesis, offering it for discussion and feedback. The individual sessions consist of one-to-one tutorials in which you can discuss the argument, the progress and possible problems of your thesis with me. For students in the BA, MA and new teacher training programmes, who write their thesis in literary studies, this course provides the "Betreuungsübung". The presentation of the thesis in a plenary session (max. 30 minutes) will be graded and counts as "mündliche Modulteilprüfung" in the BA-programme. Students in the Magister- and old teacher training programmes are advised to take this course to support them while writing their theses. Depending on the native tongue of the participants, the course will be given in English or German.

The course will take place every two weeks, with individual meetings in the weeks where we will have no common session. Our first meeting will take place in the first week of the semester.

The individual sessions consist of one-to-one tutorials in which you can discuss the argument, the progress and possible problems of your thesis with me. For students in the BA, MA and new teacher training programmes, who write their thesis in literary studies, this course provides the "Betreuungsübung". The presentation of the thesis in a plenary session (max. 30 minutes) will be graded and counts as "mündliche Modulteilprüfung" in the BA-programme. Students in the Magister- and old teacher training programmes are advised to take this course to support them while writing their theses. Depending on the native tongue of the participants, the course will be given in English or German.

The course will take place every two weeks, with individual meetings in the weeks where we will have no common session. Our first meeting will take place in the first week of the semester.

Inhalt:

This course is designed for students who are preparing or working on a final thesis in American literature or culture, be it a “Magisterarbeit,” “Zulassungsarbeit,” “BA-Arbeit” or Master’s thesis. It offers continuous support during the process of preparing or writing the theses, and provides an opportunity to share parts of it with other students. The course consists of plenary and individual sessions; the syllabus and readings will be available on the Virtual Campus.
In the plenary sessions, we will discuss general criteria and formal aspects of a thesis – such as possible topics and research questions, theoretical approaches, and structural issues. Participants will present (parts of) their thesis for discussion and feedback. Inhalt:

This course offers an introduction to key themes and methods in American cultural studies as an interdisciplinary field of inquiry. Thematically, we will explore issues such as religion and immigration, the frontier and regionalism, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, media and technology, America as nature s nation and America and the world; conceptually, the focus will be on equality and difference as utopian ideas that have shaped American culture from colonial times to the present.
This course is designed to provide you with basic skills in American cultural studies, with a strong emphasis on reading and discussing various kinds of texts in their cultural contexts. Our primary readings will include short stories, poems and excerpts from novels as well as historical documents, essays, political speeches, photographs, popular songs and films, while several theoretical essays will provide us with a language for discussing changing concepts of culture.

Inhalt:

This course is designed specifically for students of all teaching degrees (“Lehrämter”) who prepare for the 3-hour written “Staatsexamen” in American Literature according to the new LPO. However, students preparing other final exams - oral or written - are very welcome, too.
The “Repetitorum” will assist students in their preparations for the final written exam. The class, however, is NOT a substitute for each student’s individual study time! During class, students will receive immediate feedback about their level of preparation for the final exam. The most important aim of this class, however, is to provide participants with a platform to discuss overarching, complex issues, rather than particular details of one certain topic. Once again: the class aims to assist students in their preparations, but it does NOT replace independent study!

The topics for this semester will be chosen by the class participants themselves during the first session.

The 1980s mark the beginning of a HIV and AIDS crisis that the world is still struggling with today. In the US, this crisis has, from very early on, been discussed not only in medical and sociopolitical discourses but in literary texts as well. These literary approaches to HIV and AIDS are surprisingly diverse in form and content, and talk about living with and dying from the disease, about mourning dying friends and lovers, and about healing aspects for a disease that cannot be overcome.

In this seminar we will discuss various HIV and AIDS texts, including autobiographies, novels, short stories, poems, plays, and movies. We will look at the development of the stories these texts have told over the past three decades, and at the changing roles that race, gender and region play in their different approaches to the disease.

Students are expected to give a short presentation on a text from the reading list and participate actively in the course. Since this is a block seminar, presentations will only take place in the second part of the seminar and should be concise, to the point, and no longer that 10 minutes.

Material needed for the seminar will be provided well ahead of class in the Virtual Campus. You are welcome to bring in materials from outside of class (newspaper articles, handouts etc.), and you can also plan classroom activities for your presentation.

"I was raised in the Jewish persuasion, but when I got older I converted to narcissism."

For fifty years, Woody Allen has been a prolific writer, actor, director, film philosopher, and entertainer (jazz musician too). His major feat is combining mundane life with abstract theology, technical knowhow with film history erudition, intellectual sophistication with popular appeal. The objective of this course is to examine his films in order to illustrate the larger themes they explore, such as urban life, modern relationships and sexuality, mortality, psychoanalysis, and humor. From thinly plotted works in which the story is used merely to hang his one-liner jokes, to silly crowd-pleasers and parodies, to more serious works brimming with cultural and literary allusions, Allen has authored and often acted in memorable milestones of American cinema. We will address each film on the syllabus in its broader cultural context, as a “Woody Allen film” (a genre in its own right), and spend time on fundamental techniques of film art in order to better appreciate the director’s skills. Allen’s films have shifted between subtlety and frivolity, and they have to contend with viewer’s expectations about the Woody Allen “persona”—a constant in his films, at once invoked and self-referentially derided in performances by Woody-like characters and actors, or by Allen himself.

Students will guide and conduct the class discussions through study questions, analysis of film clips, and cross-work surveys of frequent topics including representations of the city, gender issues, and Allen’s irreverent treatment of religion and Jewish-American life. Readings will be made available on the Virtual Campus and must be dissected carefully by all participants prior to each session. The canon I have selected for the class comprises widely acclaimed major works and smaller films that run against the grain of Allen’s typical style. Each session will revolve around one film, while other (similar or contrastive) works will be recommended for optional viewing.

Interested students are advised to watch the films not simply for entertainment purposes, but with the following questions in mind: Can art organize the chaos of the world? Does religion offer salvation from the cruel futility of the universe? Is Allen’s shocking productivity an answer to his self-effacing sense of his own—or his work’s—insignificance? How does the creative artist relate to morality? And why has Allen managed to write astounding female roles and tease excellent performances from his female actors? More specifically in terms of film aesthetics: How does Allen employ and flout genre conventions? His films sometimes appear loose, meandering, and contrived—but do they rest on a deeper sense of order? What sources of humor can we detect in his writing and direction, and how do his films involve and challenge their audience?
Please note that this class requires viewing of a large number of films along with consultation of secondary literature, of the director’s biographical background, as well as a comprehensive study of film aesthetics. It will be fun, but also work-intensive.

Triviale Massenkultur oder No-Brow Meisterwerke? Das Seminar geht davon aus, dass Comics aus der Medienlandschaft des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts nicht mehr wegzudenken sind. Der Comic ist angekommen, dies steht inzwischen außer Frage. Doch wie genau lässt sich diese Erfolgsgeschichte rekonstruieren, welche Mechanismen haben den Aufstieg dieses Mediums beflügelt und inwiefern könnte ein Fokus auf Comics die Geschichte und Interdependenz von anderen Medien, an die Comics über viele Jahre noch gebunden waren (z.B. Zeitungen), in ein neues Licht rücken? Das Seminar setzt sich das Ziel, insbesondere solche Werke zu untersuchen, die unterschiedliche Facetten dieser hybriden Gattung aufzeigen und dabei beleuchten, dass der Comic ein spezifisches Wissenssystem darstellt mit eigenen Methoden der Erkenntnis und Beobachtung. Comics ringen nicht mehr um kulturelle und ästhetische Legitimität. Ihre herausfordernden Mischformen hinterfragen stattdessen die gängigen Normen und Methoden der Mediengeschichtsschreibung.

Das Seminar gibt einen Überblick über Geschichte, Theorie und Analyse des Mediums von frühen fragmentarischen Werken bis hin zum zeitgenössischen Comicroman („Graphic Novel“), dessen Entwicklung und Ästhetik ein zentraler Gegenstand unserer Betrachtungen sein wird. Ausgehend von der inhärenten Intermedialität grafischer Literatur sowie von ihrer Verortung innerhalb der Populärkultur werden die Stationen der Comicgeschichte und neuere Tendenzen zumal in den USA anhand repräsentativer Werke anschaulich gemacht. Verschiedene Ansätze der Comicforschung in Comicform (McCloud; Sousanis, Unflattening) werden sowohl an klassischen als auch ungewöhnlichen Beispielen erprobt. Im Mittelpunkt des Seminars steht die medienadäquate Analyse dieser Werke im Detail und kulturhistorischen Kontext. Zunächst wird Grundlagenwissen vermittelt, um die Konstellation von Schrift und Bild semiotisch zu bestimmen und zu lesen. Jede Woche beschäftigen wir uns mit einem Text, der in Verhältnis zu anderen Medien (Literatur, Film, Fernsehen, Malerei, Fotografie, Werbung) gesetzt wird.

Die ausgewählten Themenbereiche dokumentieren die zunehmende Ausdifferenzierung des Mediums sowie eine trotz dieses inflationären Booms unberührbare innere Kohärenz, die um vier Sektionen kreist: Erinnerungsbilder, Identitätskonstruktionen, Reportagen und nicht zuletzt visuelle Sprachskepsis in textfreien, sogenannten „Silent Graphic Novels“, die obwohl erst kürzlich von der Forschung festgehalten in Wirklichkeit bereits auf eine hundertjährige Tradition zurückblicken können.

This course provides a concise introduction to major themes and methods in the study of English and American literature. We will discuss key features of the main literary genres poetry, prose fiction and drama, explore selected approaches in literary theory and criticism as a basis for analyzing and interpreting literary texts, and survey the main periods and developments of English and American literary history. The focus, however, will be on the discussion of textual examples from these various vantage points. The goal of this course is to enable you to articulate fresh readings of texts from different genres, in their cultural contexts, and informed by key theories and analytical methods.

Inhalt:

In this seminar we will study trends and schools in literary theory since the 1950s. Our reading will consist of key texts by thinkers identified with formalism and structuralism, deconstruction and poststructuralism, gender studies and queer theory, psychoanalytical criticism, (Neo-)Marxism and Cultural Materialism, New Historicism, postcolonial criticism and reader-response theory. Depending on the participants’ research interests and input, we may also consider more recent approaches like ecocriticism and possible-worlds theory, or less "canonized" theories (e.g. systems theory).

The course is intended to assist students in both finding their own approaches towards primary texts and in identifying mind-sets and methods applied in the secondary sources they read in their other seminars: "What theory demonstrates […] is that there is no position free of theory, not even the one called common sense." (V. B. Leitch).

This class is based not only on the reading, but also the in depth analysis of theoretical writing. Therefore, students are expected to prepare diligently for each session by (1) reading the assigned text(s), (2) studying each text’s background/context, and (3) establishing some basic understanding of the theory discussed in the respective text – before coming to class! Only then will it be possible for us to engage in critical discussion during our sessions. In sum, it is important for participants to do the assigned reading, attend class regularly and contribute to class discussions. Your input is mandatory and will be welcome!

Like Feathered Brushstrokes in the Sand: Reading Asian North American Fiction

This course serves as an introduction to Asian American Studies as an important interdisciplinary field of research. The primary objective of this class is to introduce students to a variety of literary texts by and about Asian Americans that deal with major themes and issues of Asian immigrants in the US and Canada.

We will examine historical and contemporary ties and struggles of Asian Americans from the 19th century until today, and discuss themes such as gender and migration, intergenerational conflict, cultural appropriation, ethnic belonging, and national citizenship. How does a term like “Asian American” affect a community that includes groups and individuals that are often very dissimilar? What are shared characteristics and how are differences maintained and utilized? To answer these and other questions, we will read texts about the internment of Japanese citizens in Canada (Kogawa), about Chinese women becoming Americanized (Tan), and about Korean attempts to assimilate (Lee), as well as texts that address prejudices against Filipinos (Hagedorn) and negotiate Indian identity in New York (Lahiri). We will trace the ugly truth of sinophobia through North-American history and legislation, as seen in personal narratives and collective memory. Last, but not least, we will also examine stereotypes within and about an ethnic group that helped shape US-American and Canadian culture.

Our readings will include several novels, as well as short stories, poems, cartoons, and photographs. This class is a reading exercise (Leseübung), designed to assist you in working through the reading list. Therefore, participants are expected to read a lot. Students are asked to read at least two novels in advance, meaning: before class starts in April. The novels will form the background for most of our discussions, but additional reading will be required during the semester.

Note: Make sure that you order your copy of the novels (e-book or printed) well in advance – preferably before the beginning of the term! It is important for participants to do the assigned reading, attend class regularly and contribute to class discussions. Your input will be welcome!

Like Feathered Brushstrokes in the Sand: Reading Asian North American Fiction

This course serves as an introduction to Asian American Studies as an important interdisciplinary field of research. The primary objective of this class is to introduce students to a variety of literary texts by and about Asian Americans that deal with major themes and issues of Asian immigrants in the US and Canada.

We will examine historical and contemporary ties and struggles of Asian Americans from the 19th century until today, and discuss themes such as gender and migration, intergenerational conflict, cultural appropriation, ethnic belonging, and national citizenship. How does a term like “Asian American” affect a community that includes groups and individuals that are often very dissimilar? What are shared characteristics and how are differences maintained and utilized? To answer these and other questions, we will read texts about the internment of Japanese citizens in Canada (Kogawa), about Chinese women becoming Americanized (Tan), and about Korean attempts to assimilate (Lee), as well as texts that address prejudices against Filipinos (Hagedorn) and negotiate Indian identity in New York (Lahiri). We will trace the ugly truth of sinophobia through North-American history and legislation, as seen in personal narratives and collective memory. Last, but not least, we will also examine stereotypes within and about an ethnic group that helped shape US-American and Canadian culture.

Our readings will include several novels, as well as short stories, poems, cartoons, and photographs. This class is a reading exercise (Leseübung), designed to assist you in working through the reading list. Therefore, participants are expected to read a lot. Students are asked to read at least two novels in advance, meaning: before class starts in April. The novels will form the background for most of our discussions, but additional reading will be required during the semester.

Note: Make sure that you order your copy of the novels (e-book or printed) well in advance – preferably before the beginning of the term! It is important for participants to do the assigned reading, attend class regularly and contribute to class discussions. Your input will be welcome!

Attention: Participants of this class are strongly encouraged to attend the lecture by Ms. Hilbert (Landeskunde Asia and the Pacific) as a complimentary class to this reading exercise.
The lecture will cover the regions where authors and protagonists discussed in our class originate from, and thus will provide you with in-depth information about the geographical, political, cultural and linguistic characteristics of those countries and their peoples.

The Media Session is designed as an extension of those classes of the American Department that work with movies. However, we encourage all students to attend the movie sessions, because we show American classics as well as classics inspired by America.

This term we will watch movies that include or deal with AMERICAN ICONS. The term "icon" here refers to certain actors, directors and places, but also to cultural narratives, such as the American Dream and America as the Promised Land, that have become icons themselves.

In the introduction of her award-winning science fiction classic The Left Hand of Darkness (1969) Ursula Le Guin writes:

Science fiction is metaphor. What sets it apart from older forms of fiction seems to be its use of new metaphors […]. Space travel is one of these; so is an alternative society, an alternative biology; the future is another.

This course will explore the ‘new metaphors’ of American science fiction focusing on texts that deal with a particular kind of ‘alternative society’: the one-gender world. Reaching back at least to the 19th century, American authors have experimented with the idea of all-male, all-female, or fully androgynous societies. Reacting to and acting in different social and historical contexts such as the westward expansion, the early feminist movement, the rise of socialism in the US, the feminist and gay movement of the 1950s and 60s, the cold war, and the more radical (lesbian) feminist movement of the 70s and 80s, sci-fi short stories and novels have examined the personal and political dimensions of gender relations as well as questions of gender identity and sexuality.

Starting with two late 19th-century utopian stories and one early 20thcentury speculative fiction novel, we will think about how these precursors to modern American science fiction imagined one-gender societies in the US and elsewhere in order to critique the gender politics of their own time. During the second part of the course, we will read science fiction from the 1960s to the 1980s. We will explore how these texts look to the future or other planets to investigate questions of gender and sexuality in the context of scientific progress and technological development. We will also discuss how these texts often link gender and sexuality to issues of war, colonization, spirituality, and environmental concerns.

This course brings old and new into a productive dialog. We will discuss the nineteenth-century novel as a major phenomenon in American literary and cultural history, but from a decidedly contemporary perspective. That is, we will study the development of the American novel from the historical romance and sentimental novel to realism and naturalism, and reexamine this history from the perspective of late 20th/early 21st century theories. How can we reread the classics from the perspective of environmental criticism, critical race theory, new materialism, new regionalism, and recent discussion in feminist theory, and understand them in fresh ways?

Inhalt:

This lecture provides an overview of the United States’ literary history from the 1880s until today, focusing on the colonial era, the enlightenment, and romanticism. For each of these periods, the thematic, formal and stylistic elements of a wide range of novels, plays, short stories, poems and essays will be discussed in the broader context of America’s cultural and intellectual history.
In order to understand how different groups of Americans have imagined their culture at specific moments in time, we will analyze texts that address the diversity of American experiences in terms of race, class, gender, region, and political conviction. We will also explore the ways in which literary texts have critically engaged with the past and with other cultures, charting new directions for the relationship between literature and culture. Overall, we will investigate to which degree processes of modernization and the ideal of democratization can be understood as one of American literature’s major driving forces.

“Jetzt ist die Zeit und Stunde da, wir reisen nach Amerika!” German Immigrants in US-American and Canadian Literature and Culture

This interdisciplinary course has been designed especially for North-American exchange students and German students, inviting them to study each other’s cultures together. Readings and classroom discussions will be both in English and German.

“The achievements and contributions of German-Americans have had a profound effect on making the United States the country it is today. Famous for their practical skills, thrift, hard work, interest in the arts, and enjoyment of good living they have left their mark indelibly on American culture and life. [M]any […] have played a special part in creating the German-American legacy.” (Website of the U.S. Embassy in Germany)

Parts of this cultural legacy are literary texts published by and about German immigrants in the US and Canada. In this class we will analyze representations of transatlantic ties between Germany and North-America from the beginning of the 19th century until today. How did moving to America or Canada affect the identity of German emigrants? How did their new home transform their ideas and ideals? How, in turn, were the US and Canada affected by the large numbers of immigrants originating from German speaking countries? And how has this German mass migration shaped the image of the US and Canada? What role has literature played in this transatlantic exchange?

Our readings will include several novels, as well as short stories, poems, newspaper articles, photographs, and songs. This will be a very reading-intensive class, so students are asked to read three texts in advance, meaning: before class starts in April. The novels will form the background for most of our discussions, but additional reading will be required during the semester.

Note: Make sure that you order your copy of the novels (e-book or printed) well in advance –preferably before the beginning of the term! It is important for participants to do the assigned reading, attend class regularly and contribute to class discussions. Your input will be welcome!
