Inhalt:

This course is addressed at students who are preparing or working at a BA-thesis in American Literature or Culture. It is supposed to offer continuous support to students while preparing or writing their theses, and to give them the opportunity to present and discuss their work with other students. The course consists of plenary and individual sessions. A definite schedule will be set up in the first meeting of the class. There will be a site on the Virtual Campus; access will be given upon registration.

In the plenary sessions, we shall discuss general formal aspects and criteria of a thesis - such as possible topics, structure, suitable theoretical approaches. Participants will present (parts of) their thesis, offering it for discussion and feedback. The individual sessions consist of one-to-one tutorials in which you can discuss the argument, the progress and possible problems of your thesis with me. For students who write their thesis in cultural studies, this course provides the "Betreuungsübung". The presentation of the thesis in a plenary session (max. 30 minutes) will be graded and counts as "mündliche Modulteilprüfung". Depending on the native tongue of the participants, the course will be given in English or German.

The course will take place every two weeks, with individual meetings in the weeks where we will have no common session. Our first meeting will take place in the SECOND week of the semester (Oct 19).

Inhalt:

Similar to, but also strikingly different from its Southern neighbor, Canada is a nation of cultural pluralism and literary diversity with a bilingual administration and a multiethnic population. In this class we will discuss texts from the second half of the twentieth century in order to gain a deeper understanding of Canada’s literature and culture. For this purpose, we will consult material from different fields of every-day life in Canada today: politics, arts, lifestyle magazines, movies, music, and sports. Our primary reading will consist of four novels (see below) and we will also attend the public readings by the authors of the two first texts on our reading list. Additionally, we will then meet the writers again for a workshop in class!

Note: This will be a very reading-intensive class, so students are asked to read two texts in advance, meaning: before class starts in October. The novels will form the background for most of our discussions, but additional reading will be provided during the semester.

Inhalt:

This course offers an introduction to key themes and methods in American cultural studies as an interdisciplinary field of inquiry. Thematically, we will explore issues such as religion and immigration, the frontier and regionalism, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, media and technology, America as nature’s nation and America and the world; conceptually, the focus will be on equality and difference as utopian ideas that have shaped American culture from colonial times to the present.

This course is designed to provide you with basic skills in American cultural studies, with a strong emphasis on reading and discussing various kinds of texts in their cultural contexts. Our primary readings will include short stories, poems and excerpts from novels as well as historical documents, essays, political speeches, photographs, popular songs and films, while several theoretical essays will provide us with a language for discussing changing concepts of culture.

Inhalt:

This course is designed specifically for students of all teaching degrees ("Lehrämter") who prepare for the 3-hour written "Staatsexamen" in American Literature according to the new LPO. However, students preparing other final exams - oral or written - are very welcome, too.

The "Repetitorum" is a class designed to assist students in their preparations for the final written exam. The class, however, does NOT substitute each student’s individual study time! During class, students will receive immediate feedback about their level of preparation for the final exam. The most important aim of this class, however, is to provide participants with a platform to discuss complex issues, rather than particular details of one certain topic. Once again: the class aims to assist students in their preparations, but it does NOT replace independent study!

The topics for this semester will be chosen by the class participants themselves during the first session.

Inhalt:

This course provides a concise introduction to major themes and methods in the study of English and American literature. We will discuss key features of the main literary genres poetry, prose fiction and drama, explore selected approaches in literary theory and criticism as a basis for analyzing and interpreting literary texts, and survey the main periods and developments of English and American literary history. The focus, however, will be on the discussion of textual examples from these various vantage points. The goal of this course is to enable you to articulate fresh readings of texts from different genres, in their cultural contexts, and informed by key theories and analytical methods.

Inhalt:

In this seminar we will study trends and schools in literary theory since the 1950s. Our reading will consist of key texts by thinkers identified with formalism and structuralism, deconstruction and poststructuralism, gender studies and queer theory, psychoanalytical criticism, (Neo-)Marxism and Cultural Materialism, New Historicism, postcolonial criticism and reader-response theory. Depending on the participants’ research interests and input, we may also consider more recent approaches like ecocriticism and possible-worlds theory, or less "canonized" theories (e.g. systems theory).

The course is intended to assist students in both finding their own approaches towards primary texts and in identifying mind-sets and methods applied in the secondary sources they read in their other seminars: "What theory demonstrates […] is that there is no position free of theory, not even the one called common sense." (V. B. Leitch).

This class is based not only on the reading, but also the in depth analysis of theoretical writing. Therefore, students are expected to prepare diligently for each session by (1) reading the assigned text(s), (2) studying each text’s background/context, and (3) establishing some basic understanding of the theory discussed in the respective text – before coming to class! Only then will it be possible for us to engage in critical discussion during our sessions. In sum, it is important for participants to do the assigned reading, attend class regularly and contribute to class discussions. Your input is mandatory and will be welcome!

A course reader will be made available for students of this class once the schedule has been agreed upon.

The course will take place every two weeks. Our first meeting will take place in the SECOND week of the semester (Oct 19).

The Media Session is designed as an extension of those classes of the American Department that work with movies. However, we encourage all students to attend the movie sessions, because we show American classics as well as classics inspired by America.

Since the Academy Award of Merit - better known by its nickname Oscar® - will celebrate its 88th birthday at the end of this winter term, we will take a look at selected masterpieces and some long forgotten heroes of its glorious past, present and (possibly) future. Inhalt:

In 2006, the making of Monica Ali s novel Brick Lane into a film caused the first major political uproar in the United Kingdom since the publication of Salman Rushdie s Satanic Verses in 1989. The controversy about its representation of London s Bangladeshi immigrant community, and the question whether Ali, daughter of an English mother and a Bangladeshi immigrant who had never experienced hardship in her life, was 'qualified' to describe the situation of Bangladeshi women in Brick Lane, parted the literary nation and brought no less a critic than Rushdie himself on the stage in her defense.

Discussing Brick Lane along with Arundhati Roy s The God of Small Things and Bharati Mukherjee s Jasmine, as well as works by Zadie Smith and Jhumpa Lahiri, in this seminar we will explore the effects of colonialism and migration on colonial subjects and their children, who often leave for the country of the colonizer. While some of them return, others stay to start families and build new lives. We will discuss how South Asian and Caribbean immigrants to the United Kingdom and the United States experience and deal with the process of migration; how they relate to concepts such as home, family, and nation; and how they define and express their identities. Comparing the experiences of first and second generation migrants we will try to figure out whether and how these differ from one generation to the next, and whether there are any differences between their experiences in the country of the former colonizer, Britain, or the more neutral America.

Inhalt:

In 2006, the making of Monica Ali’s novel Brick Lane into a film caused the first major political uproar in the United Kingdom since the publication of Salman Rushdie’s Satanic Verses in 1989. The controversy about its representation of London’s Bangladeshi immigrant community, and the question whether Ali, daughter of an English mother and a Bangladeshi immigrant who had never experienced hardship in her life, was 'qualified' to describe the situation of Bangladeshi women in Brick Lane, parted the literary nation and brought no less a critic than Rushdie himself on the stage in her defense.

Discussing Brick Lane along with Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things and Bharati Mukherjee’s Jasmine, as well as works by Zadie Smith and Jhumpa Lahiri, in this seminar we will explore the effects of colonialism and migration on colonial subjects and their children, who often leave for the country of the colonizer. While some of them return, others stay to start families and build new lives. We will discuss how South Asian and Caribbean immigrants to the United Kingdom and the United States experience and deal with the process of migration; how they relate to concepts such as home, family, and nation; and how they define and express their identities. Comparing the experiences of first and second generation migrants we will try to figure out whether and how these differ from one generation to the next, and whether there are any differences between their experiences in the country of the former colonizer, Britain, or the more ‘neutral’ America.

Dramatic art arose as a complement to, perhaps also as an antidote to, war. (Acts of War, xv)

Despite the formal withdrawal of all U.S. combat troops in December 2011, the second Iraq War and its aftermath are still controversial topics in the United States. Since the late 2000s, but especially in the last couple of years, an increasing number of texts, both autobiographical and fictional in nature, dealing with the Iraq War have been written and published. A closer look at this emerging literary genre, and what these texts say about the culture of war in the United States, is therefore an important and exciting task for American literary studies.

This course aims to examine not only autobiographies by soldiers deployed to Iraq, but also fictional texts about the War. A primary focus will be on the representation of the War itself, but also on the way in which these texts engage with and represent the more problematic issues connected to the War, starting from the controversy about Weapons of Mass Destruction before the start of the invasion, to the Abu Ghraib scandal, and the so-called War on Terror in general. Another focus will be the comparison of these contemporary texts to American literature about earlier wars, especially the Vietnam War, but also the two World Wars and the American Civil War, and the analysis of how American writing about war has developed over the centuries.

During the 1970s scholars of literary and cultural studies in the U.S. as well as Germany first began to examine the lives, works and representations of individuals identifying as/identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer, building the foundations of the multifaceted academic field today known as LGBTQ or Queer Studies. This German-American seminar will set out to explore some of the major questions and issues raised by queer theory and the LGBTQ arts in the United States and Germany. While the theoretical focus of the course will lie on U.S. American critical writings from the 1980s onward, the list of primary texts will span the 20th and the 21st century, contain both American and German works, and include literary texts, comics, film, photography as well as painting.

The seminar links recent, intensely mediatised cases of police brutality in the US, the ensuing riots, and the #BlackLivesMatter movement with the historically vexed relationship between black communities and law enforcement. Specifically, we investigate prominent cases of policy brutality and misconduct—in which black citizens were harassed, intimidated, or even killed by white police officers—in order to highlight their impact on African American communities and traditions. Materials include literary texts, films, music by US rappers and hip hop artists, as well as painting, comics, and performance art.

The readings puzzle together a genealogy of police injustice, from the Rodney King acquittals and 1992 Los Angeles Riots to the Eric Garner verdict of 2014, as symptoms of deeper festering problems at the heart of US culture. Despite the values prescribed by American democracy and its ideals of equality, black communities remain crippled by racial profiling and abuse. In these images and narratives we see just how far contemporary indignation over the second-class status of black legal subjects can reach, and what voices it can mobilize. We find in these documents of unlawful treatment both the rawness of black protest art and the calculated dissent of mainstream white artists who seek to bear witness to and criticize the spectre of white racism.

Inhalt:

Im Zeitalter der digitalen Medien ist der Wahrheitsgehalt und epistemologische Status nichtfiktionaler Bilder fragwürdig geworden. Fotografische und filmische Bilder besitzen eine dubiöse Faktizität, die ästhetisch und politisch relevante Fragen des Wirklichkeitsbezugs von Bildern aufwirft. Das Seminar setzt sich zum Ziel, die Breite von Authentizitätsbegriffen in der Geschichte dokumentarischer Bilder nachzuzeichnen und zu analysieren. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Frage nach der Konstruiertheit der Dokumentation sowie nach der Glaubwürdigkeit authentischer Effekte. Wie lässt sich mediale Wirklichkeit zwischen unverstelltem Erzählen und bewusster Reflektivität verorten? Die Sektionen des Seminars widmen sich drei Themenblöcken—Armut und Wirtschaftskrise; Körper und Umwelt; Gesetz und Gewalt—denen zahlreiche opulente oder minimalistische Meisterwerke zugeordnet werden können.

Inhalt:

The famous American playwright Edward Albee once observed that “[o]ne must let the play happen to one; one must let the mind loose to respond as it will, to receive impressions, to sense rather than know, to gather rather than immediately understand.”

This seminar will try to not only “let plays happen” and “receive impressions,” but also engage students in understanding some of the most famous plays in American literary history. We will read American dramas in a chronical order: from excerpts of early colonial and revolutionary plays, via the first successful African-American plays written during Romanticism, all the way to modernist and post-modernist plays. During the course, we will discuss a broad range of typical features of American drama as well as some of its notorious forms, like the Minstrel Shows. We will deepen our analysis of plays with a visit to the theater in Erlangen, where we will watch an adaption of Arthur Miller's The Crucible.

For our central reading we will focus on four classic American plays, but will also engage in shorter plays and excerpts from other dramas and Broadway shows.

The poems of Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson, for all their thematic and stylistic differences, intersect on a number of important levels. In particular, their respective constructions of a new poetic voice revolve around related notions of the nonhuman world and human-nature relations. In this course, we will approach Whitman's and Dickinson's poetry by way of theories and concepts developed in environmentally oriented criticism, or ecocriticism. Beginning with a discussion of ecocriticism's major theoretical interventions, we will explore its genealogy and recent controversies about ethics and aesthetics, place and displacement, transnationalism and globalization. A reading position informed by these debates reveals complex and often ambivalent environmental implications in Whitman's and Dickinson's work. We will look at a wide variety of their poems against major nineteenth-century cultural transformations that were linked, directly or indirectly, to changing views of the natural environment, including the development of newly specialized natural sciences and their relationship to religion, the emerging conservation movement, America's role as a global imperial power, and shifting notions of race, the body, gender, and sexuality.

(If you get a different Dickinson edition, make sure it is a complete one, and a Franklin edition; others use a different numbering system than Franklin, which would lead to confusion.)
• Whitman, Walt. Poetry and Collected Prose. Ed. Justin Kaplan. New York: Library of America, 1996. (Alternatively, the Norton Critical Edition, edited by Michael Moon; or the older Norton Critical Edition, edited by Sculley Bradley and Harold Blodgett, also work.)
