Inhalt:
Ecofeminism, postcolonial ecocriticism, material ecocriticism, affective ecocriticism, animal studies, environmental communication – all these terms, theories, and approaches have developed over the last 30 years of ecocritical scholarship with the common goal of grasping the relationship between the natural environment, humanity, and literature. Ecocriticism as an umbrella term has since been established as one of the most important and most relevant literary theories of the 21st century. From different perspectives, ecocriticism analyses the relationship between human and non-human world in both fictional and non-fictional texts; texts that range from 18th-century natural history essays that focus on describing natural detail to 21st-century climate change fiction.

This course offers an overview of the history and different branches of ecocriticism in close connection with US environmental history, focusing on various literary texts from the 19th century until today (e.g. Henry Thoreau, Emily Dickinson, Sylvia Plath, Linda Howe, Mary Oliver, Jack Collom, Margret Atwood …). Primary texts will be discussed and selected together with the participants in the first session.

Inhalt:
Tailored for undergraduate and graduate students seeking a historical understanding of comics, this wide-ranging lecture unravels the development, milestones, and prominent creators of the American comics landscape. Guided by sources and methods from comic studies, cultural history, art history, and narrative theory, the lecture scrutinizes comics as an artistic depository of historical knowledge and socio-political critique.

We begin with an in-depth analysis of the rise of illustrated narratives in the late 19th century, resulting in the emergence of iconic newspaper comic strips such as Richard F. Outcault's "The Yellow Kid" and Winsor McCay's "Little Nemo in Slumberland." Subsequent sessions focus on the Golden Age of Comics, marked by the creation of superheroes like Superman and Batman, whom we contextualize within the broader historical milieu of World War II as American archetypes embodying the nation’s aspirational ideals. Moving on to the Silver Age, the lecture addresses the reinvigoration of the superhero genre and its relationship with Cold War narratives through the works of Jack Kirby and Stan Lee, among others, while also analyzing the impact of the Comics Code Authority (1954) on the content and artistry of the medium. A thorough examination of the Bronze Age illuminates comics’s turn to darker territory and controversial social issues such as race, poverty, and addiction. Here we take some time to investigate the inception of underground comics as a counter-cultural response to the conservatism and consumerism of the Reagan era. In the modern age, the course discusses in detail the contributions of graphic novelists like Art Spiegelman, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning "Maus," a story about surviving the Holocaust and its legacy in the present, and appraises the innovations and political punch of creators such as Alison Bechdel in "Fun Home" and Ta-Nehisi Coates' reimagining of Black Panther.

Through background analysis and nuanced close reading, the lecture uncovers the evolution of US comics as an arena for exploration of subjects like war, immigration, multiculturalism, diversity, and justice. The aim is to provide a colorful, enjoyable experience of American comics that is of course fun and informative, but also revealing of how comics have always mirrored and questioned cultural and political shifts in US history.

Inhalt:
Since Robert A. Heinlein coined the term in 1941 to signify a subcategory of science fiction, "speculative fiction" has been an elusive term for western literary and cultural criticism, with scholars continuously debating its lack of a clear definition or categorization, and its ambiguous position between science fiction and fantasy. According to Marek Oziewicz, however, speculative fiction could be understood as "a meta-generic fuzzy set super category," or "what Pierre Bourdieu has called a cultural field: a domain of activity defined by its own field-specific rules of functioning, agents, and institutions" (Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Literature, par.1). In this sense, speculative fiction emerges as a useful umbrella term for an ambiguous fictional space with unclear borders, multiple and hybrid genre forms, and endless imaginative possibilities to speculate on the present and the future – starting from a simple "what if?". Indeed, as Ursula Le Guin stresses in the introduction to The Left Hand of Darkness, science fiction or speculative fiction cannot predict the future, but serves as a "thought-experiment…to describe reality, the present world" (3).

In this context, the recent proliferation of diverse ethnic voices in contemporary speculative fiction, with Latinx, Chicanx, Indigenous, and Afrofuturist takes on present and future alternate worlds, marks a crucial cultural moment in North America and beyond. It not only further challenges the predominant whiteness of canon scholarship and genre studies, but it also interrogates traditional western notions of linear history, science and technology, and progress, as well as colonialism, national identity, borders and frontiers.

In this course, we will read recent American speculative fiction by Latinx, Chicanx, Indigenous, and Black authors, and discuss how these texts describe the present and imagine the future – whether utopian, dystopian, or apocalyptic. We will explore how these texts tackle pressing questions that occupy the everyday lives of ethnic communities in the U.S., especially issues around land and borders, national and racial identities, gender and queerness, the non-human world and the environmental crisis. We will pay particular attention to the intersections of the above mentioned concepts from a "borderlands" perspective that acknowledges in-between, hybrid, and fluid identities, and interrogate the specific cultural work that this ambiguous futuristic literature achieves in the here and now – as a noteworthy resistance.

Inhalt:
This course aims to assist students in the Basismodul in writing their first term paper in literary or cultural studies in Bamberg. We will discuss general formal aspects and content related criteria of an academic paper, such as possible topics, structure, suitable theoretical approaches. Primarily, however, we will practice how to choose a topic, how to develop a coherent structure, how to involve theoretical frameworks, and how to adhere to the MLA citation rules. Finally, we will discuss the different types of source material that are suitable for the list of references of your paper. Students have the chance to present a provisional outline in a closed discussion forum, where they will receive feedback from fellow students and the instructor.

This course is also addressed at students in the Vertiefungsmodul who are preparing or working at a BA-thesis in American Literature or Culture. Therefore, this course provides the guidance sessions for the BA thesis (Betreuungsübung) for students in the BA programs who write their thesis in literary or cultural studies. It assists students in the preparation of their final paper, and gives them an opportunity to discuss their work with other students. BA-candidates will present parts of their final paper, offering it for discussion and feedback. If you are planning to attend this class, make sure that the instructor will also be your thesis advisor. Please contact Ms. Konopka well in advance to discuss your topic and the requirements for the supervision.

Please note that this is a practical training course and not a lecture! You are expected to participate in the tasks and discussions.

Inhalt:
This seminar is an internet-based survey course that offers students in the “Aufbaumodul Literaturwissenschaft” an overview of the main developments in US-American literary history. The class will help students to understand the links between literary periods, their central ideas, and important stylistic features. The course provides participants with detailed information about the complexities that underlie and connect each literary work and period. The course’s other main goal is to familiarize students with key texts and key discourses of US-American literature, such as race, class, and gender. The texts were chosen because they either represent crucial aspects of their respective literary periods, or because they address topics and concepts that were controversial at this particular point in history.

Despite being an E-Learning course, this is a discussion-based class, so active participation is crucial. Participants are required to contribute to class discussions by posting at least two quality responses per forum. Your learning process will be enabled through your active involvement in the different assignments, which are designed to allow you as much creative freedom as possible while assisting you in your reading and understanding of the poems, short stories, novels, and plays.
Empfohlene Literatur:
Most readings will be made available via the Learning Management System (VC/Moodle).
Two texts, however, need to be acquired by each participant individually:
  • Kate Chopin, The Awakening (1899)

Inhalt:
This course provides a concise introduction to major themes and methods in the study of English and American literature with a focus on American literature.

We will discuss key features of the main literary genres poetry, prose fiction, and drama, explore selected approaches in literary theory and criticism as a basis for analyzing and interpreting literary texts, and survey the main periods and developments of American literary history. The focus, however, will be on the discussion of textual examples from these various vantage points. The goal of this course is to enable you to articulate up-to-date readings of texts from different genres, in their cultural contexts, informed by key theories and analytical methods.

Please note that all Introductions to English and American Literary Studies prepare students for the analysis and interpretation of both English and American literature. The only difference is that the Introduction taught by members of the English Literature section uses literary examples from a primarily British context, and the one taught by members of the American Studies section uses primarily American examples. Choosing one or the other Introduction does not mean that you "specialize" in English or American literature, and you don't have to take your later courses in the same area.

Inhalt:
This interdisciplinary course has been designed especially for North-American exchange students and German students, inviting them to study each other’s cultures together. Readings and classroom discussions will be both in English and German.

"The achievements and contributions of German-Americans have had a profound effect on making the United States the country it is today. Famous for their practical skills, thrift, hard work, interest in the arts, and enjoyment of good living they have left their mark indelibly on American culture and life. [M]any […] have played a special part in creating the German-American legacy." (Website of the U.S. Embassy in Germany)

Parts of this cultural legacy are literary texts published by and about German immigrants in the US and Canada. In this class we will analyze representations of transatlantic ties between Germany and North-America from the beginning of the 19th century until today. How did moving to America or Canada affect the identity of German emigrants? How did their new home transform their ideas and ideals? How, in turn, were the US and Canada affected by the large numbers of immigrants originating from German speaking countries? And how has this German mass migration shaped the image of the US and Canada? What role has literature played in this transatlantic exchange?

Our readings will include several novels, as well as short stories, poems, newspaper articles, photographs, and songs. This will be a VERY reading-intensive class, so students are asked to read several texts in advance, meaning: BEFORE class starts in the middle of October. The novels listed below will form the background for most of our discussions, but additional reading will be required during the semester.
Empfohlene Literatur:
Required Reading – BEFORE the beginning of the term:
  • Johannes Gillhoff, Jürnjakob Swehn der Amerikafahrer (1917)
  • Marj Gurasich, Letters to Oma: A Young German Girl's Account of Her First Year in Texas (1989)

Required Reading – DURING the term:
  • Louise Erdrich, The Master Butcher’s Singing Club (2003)
  • Jane Urquhart, The Stone Carvers (2001)
  • Suzette Mayr, The Widows (1998)

Note: Make sure that you order your copy of the novels (e-book or printed) well in advance –preferably before the beginning of the term! It is important for participants to do the assigned reading, attend class regularly and contribute to class discussions. Your input will be welcome!

"I'm Chile-...Dominica-Rican! / But I always say I'm from Queens!" —this line from the Broadway and movie musical In the Heights sums up this seminar’s trajectory across a wide array of Latinx literature and culture. "Latinx" refers to the multidisciplinary academic field of Latinx Studies that seeks to highlight Latin American and Caribbean voices in the US. Works by Latinx novelists, poets, and filmmakers are not only a testimony to the diverse literary and cultural landscape of the US, but they also create impactful discursive spaces for intercultural dialog and connection. Over the course of the semester, participants are invited to discuss Latinx texts that span across a variety of topics and genres. This course provides an overview of Latinx poetry, short fiction, novels, plays, musicals, and movies, such as feminist writer Gloria Anzaldúa’s highly influential Borderlands/La Frontera (1987), Junot Díaz’s 2007 novel The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, and In the Heights (2005; 2021), penned by Hamilton-creator Lin Manuel Miranda. We will discuss excerpts from these and other texts, addressing how central concepts of Latinx Studies shape and transform literary and cultural representations of race, class, gender, Indigeneity, spirituality, sexual orientation, genre, and American national identity on a wider scale.

Inhalt:
The Media Session is designed as an extension of those classes of the American Studies Section that work with movies. However, we encourage all students to attend the movie sessions, because we show American classics as well as classics inspired by America.

This semester we will focus on VAMPIRE MOVIES. Our program will take us from the 1920s to the 2010s, which will give us a chance to observe and discuss the development of the vampire movie against the backdrop of multiple movie genres (e.g. comedy, drama, satire, horror, and animation), as well as distinct changes in US-American culture. As a special treat, we will even host an all-night-long-vampire-film-marathon just before Christmas - make sure to send an email to the instructors for the exact schedule in the beginning of the semester to keep informed!

Inhalt:
While the United States has proclaimed itself to be the land of liberty and equality since its founding, with literary and cultural texts perpetuating the Enlightenment ideals underlying these claims, there has also long been a countertradition, or countertraditions, pointing out and criticizing the nation’s betrayal of its own ideals: American Gothic and, more recently, American Horror. This seminar aims to follow the development of these two closely related genres from the pre-colonial to the contemporary period, asking how the cultural anxieties U.S.-American literature and culture are haunted by change (or don’t) over time. To do this, we will read and analyze literary texts—both classics of the Gothic and Horror traditions and more contemporary replies to them using relevant theoretical literature. In addition, we will watch contemporary horror movies and TV shows, some original and some adaptations of our primary texts to analyze how these two traditions work in different media.
