- In his introduction to Promised Land: Thirteen Books that Changed America Jay Parini writes “this was never meant to be a list of the 'greatest' American books: not The Scarlet Letter, The Great Gatsby, or The Education of Henry Adams. […] I wanted books that shifted consciousness in some public fashion, however subtly, or opened fresh possibilities for the ways Americans lived their lives.” For this purpose, Parini selected a dozen and one books that in his opinion mattered for the birth and growth of the U.S., “books from the past containing ideas still true and relevant.”
In this class we will explore how literature effects change. For this purpose, we will focus on two conceptual frameworks: the idea of the U.S. as a “promised land,” and the role that literature plays in identity formation processes. After establishing a theoretical foundation with the help of essays and excerpts from standard reference texts, we will critically investigate the transformative power of literature. For our literary sources we will concentrate on the list created by Jay Parini, reading mostly excerpts from of the texts he discusses, as well as additional commentaries on these books. Two novels we will read in full: Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1851) and Jack Kerouac’s On the Road (1957).
All excerpts and essays will be provided on the Virtual Campus ahead of class. Students are, however, required to read the two novels and bring them to class – either in print or as an e-book.
Since we will deal with key issues of American Studies, the reading list is rather extensive and students are expected to come to class prepared. The class depends on two things: thorough reading and everyone’s participation in the discussions. Get ready, therefore, to confront and deal with your own prejudices, experiences, and expectations. The issues covered in this class are living issues, as they influence the lives of many – not only in American culture!
