Inhalt
This seminar challenges the traditional scope of the American film canon, exploring both foundational figures and an array of diverse voices that reflect the variety of the American experience.

Our cinematic journey begins with three iconic filmmakers of classical Hollywood cinema – Orson Welles, Howard Hawks, and John Ford – whose critical acclaim and impact on the film industry are undeniable. Moving forward, we examine influential auteur directors, from Stanley Kubrick and Francis Ford Coppola to Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese, debating not only their innovative aesthetics, but also questions of canonization, i.e. why certain films overshadow others within an auteur’s body of work.
To foster a deeper appreciation for the breadth of American screen culture, the seminar highlights unique voices often overlooked in mainstream canons, including Jewish-American filmmaker Woody Allen, the cult films of African American auteur Spike Lee, and works by several underrated female directors (Kathryn Bigelow, Ava DuVernay, and Greta Gerwig), whose stories and styles reimagine classic genres as well as gender and racial identities.

Overall, the seminar aims to provide a comprehensive view of American film history, from classical to New Hollywood, as well as an understanding of film genres (film noir, western, war film, science fiction, comedy, biopic, etc.) and how each genre has been shaped by diverse voices. Last but not least, the course also serves as an introduction to basic elements of cinematic artistry, from cinematography and lighting to non-linear storytelling, montage, and music.
