  • 8 ECTS: regelmäßige aktive Teilnahme; Präsentation; Hausarbeit in englischer Sprache nach Maßgabe des Style Sheet (4.500-6.000 Wörter)

This course is designed for students in the MA program Anglistik/Amerikanistik, the Joint Master’s Degree, as well as for Ph.D. candidates of the Fakultät GuK. Advanced BA and Lehramt students can be admitted after consulting with Professor Gerhardt or Professor Houswitschka.

Inhalt
This course on Ecocriticism – environmentally oriented literary criticism – is part of a series of classes meant to enhance students’ knowledge of the latest theoretical perspectives in literary and cultural studies and develop their awareness of the ways in which these theories are discussed and applied in today’s scholarly discourse.
“We live in an age of unintended consequence” – this assessment by the well-known German sociologist Ulrich Beck stresses how radically a growing sense of environmental crisis has changed the perspectives on even the most “innocent” aspects of our daily lives. As a theoretical approach to literature that is informed by this fundamental sense of crisis, ecocriticism does more than re-read literary and other texts with a particular attention to “representations” of nature and human-nature interaction; rather, this rapidly evolving field understands literary criticism as an ethically and politically committed practice that challenges established, potentially destructive ways of thinking and speaking about the environment.
Using the Cambridge Introduction to Literature and Environment (2011) as a reference text throughout the semester, the course will move from the beginnings of environmental literary criticism in the 1990s via more recent developments in the field to its future prospects. Students will not only get a thorough overview of ecocriticism’s history and it’s latest trends, they will also have the chance to develop and discuss ecocritical interpretations of selected primary texts.
