Inhalt:

Despite the fact that the reign of Queen Victoria is long over, scholars have insisted that our 20th and 21st century narratives are still invaded by Victoriana an invasion which we not only welcome , but insist upon. And indeed looking at the popularity of steampunk-films, TV-series like Sherlock, Warehouse 13 or Penny Dreadful, which continue to adapt classic Victorian texts, as well as the ever-increasing number of historical novels focusing on the Victorian age, it truly seems that we don t want to leave the 19th century behind. But in what ways are the Victorians still present? What is our approach towards them: nostalgic, critical or perhaps even condescending? How forward-thinking were the Victorians and how much of our perception of them is backward?

In this class we will seek to trace the continuities and contradictions between the Victorian era and its literary and aesthetic descendants: the genres of neo-victorianism and steampunk. Using various approaches from feminist, postcolonial and queer studies as well as discussions of postmodern narrativity and genre, we will examine how contemporary writers engage with the task of writing and re-writing history and in what ways they aim to change our perception of both, the past and the present.

A close reading of the novels The Time Machine (1895) and The Invisible Man (1897) by H.G. Wells, one of the so-called fathers of science-fiction , will not merely provide an insight to the Victorian era itself, but also help us to examine the continuous influence of these works on the literary and filmic genres of science-fiction and steampunk. By looking at Sarah Waters s award-winning novel Fingersmith (2001) as well as Alan Moore s popular comic book series The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (1999-) we will explore how the genre of neo-victorianism engages with re-inventing the Victorian era. And with an analysis of Richard Harland s novel Worldshaker (2009) we will investigate how steampunk fiction has developed from its Victorian influences, while additional literary and filmic examples (such as the film adaptations of Moore s and Wells s works) will give us a more detailed insight as to how the wide-spread aesthetic movement of this genre is constituted.

Participants who want to obtain ECTS-points are expected to engage in active discussions as well as to prepare a short presentation, and are required to write a term paper of 3.000 to 4.000 words.

Inhalt:

This course is designed specifically for students of all "Lehrämter" who prepare for the written "Staatsexamen" in English Literature according to the new LPO. However, students preparing other - oral or written - final exams are very welcome, too.

Students will first revise basic terminology for the analysis of poems, narrative and dramatic texts and receive an overview of literary history. After that, each session will be dedicated to one set of "Staatsexamen" questions from previous years. The range of topics (e.g. "Thema 1: Dramatische Texte der Renaissance," "Thema 6: Narrative und expositorische Texte des 19. Jahrhunderts" etc.) will depend on the participants' interest. (Before the beginning of the semester, I will invite all participants to take part in a poll in order to find out which topics ["Körbe"] they want to prepare for their "Staatsexamen.")

Optionally, students will be given the chance either to sit a written "Staatsexamen" under exam conditions or to have a mock oral exam.

Inhalt:

Has the internet changed our perception of literature? How do we regard authors and readers? And: how does this trend affect us as readers and (maybe) writers? Fanfiction, or fan fiction, is a fairly new trend in literature that has recently gained widespread attention with the publication of thousands of fanfictions every week on several internet platforms. Although fandom has been around for a long time, the participation of the formerly passive admirers and followers has turned into an active process. Literature on the internet, written by non-professional writers, has changed into a mainstream phenomenon. Thus, we will have a look at how fanfiction works and why and how people participate in it.
In this course we will deal with several aspects of fanfiction, such as fanfiction directed at an individual person, a series of books and a film/TV franchise. Moreover, we will analyse why writing and reading fanfiction has become so appealing to many people and how this marginalised phenomenon has entered popular culture. Before the course starts, you must be familiar with the Harry Potter book series and the Star Trek franchise. You need not necessarily have read or watched everything, but you will need a stout overall knowledge of both franchises. You should also have watched the films The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey as well as The Hobbit The Desolation of Smaug. More material will be provided on the VC.

Inhalt:

From the jewel in the crown of the British Empire, the exotic, spiritual land offering salvation to the Beatles, to the poverty ridden yet rising economic power in the contemporary world, the Indian subcontinent over centuries has invoked many different and often contradictory associations and pictures. These representations of India demand an added complexity, derived from the infinite number of subcultures that are informed by caste, class and community/religion, and that inform all major cultural groups. This course looks at the different faces of India as expressed in literature and film, from a colonial depiction, to a diasporic imaginary homeland and self representation.

Inhalt:

This course is addressed at students who are preparing or working at a final thesis in English or American Literature, be it a "Magisterarbeit", "Zulassungsarbeit", "BA-Arbeit" or Master's thesis. It is supposed to offer continuous support to students while preparing or writing their theses, and to give them the opportunity to present and discuss their work with other students. The course consists of plenary and individual sessions. A definite schedule will be set up in the first meeting of the class. There will be a site on the Virtual Campus; access will be given upon registration.

In the plenary sessions, we shall discuss general formal aspects and criteria of a thesis - such as possible topics, structure, suitable theoretical approaches. Participants will present (parts of) their thesis, offering it for discussion and feedback. The individual sessions consist of one-to-one tutorials in which you can discuss the argument, the progress and possible problems of your thesis with me. For students in the BA, MA and new teacher training programmes, who write their thesis in literary studies, this course provides the "Betreuungsübung". The presentation of the thesis in a plenary session (max. 30 minutes) will be graded and counts as "mündliche Modulteilprüfung" in the BA-programme. Students in the Magister- and old teacher training programmes are advised to take this course to support them while writing their theses. Depending on the native tongue of the participants, the course will be given in English or German.

The course will be taught every two weeks, with individual meetings in the weeks where we will have no common session.

Inhalt:

In this course, we will rub your cheeks with salt “till, red with laughter, / They shall look fresh a week after” (Jonson, Volpone). The course aims at providing an overview of the development of one of the most thriving genres of English literary history, the comedy, which forms part of “the longest, most continuous generic tradition in Western literature” (Corman). Our first sessions will be dedicated to theories of the comic, theories of laughter and definitions of types of comedy. We will distinguish ahistorical definitions (romantic comedy, satirical comedy, farce) from historical ones (comedy of humours, comedy of manners) and talk about comedies’ effects on their spectators.

With these preliminaries in mind, we will read, analyse, discuss – and certainly stage some scenes of – a set of comedies which are exemplary for their respective period, namely William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew (a Renaissance farce), William Wycherley’s The Country Wife (a Restoration comedy), Richard B. Sheridan’s The School for Scandal (a sentimental comedy) and Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest (a Victorian melodrama combining satire and farce with the comedy of manners). For the 20th century, we will cross medial boundaries and talk about the great variety of British comedy on screen: sitcoms (e. g. The Office), sketch comedy (e. g. Mr Bean, Monty Python’s Flying Circus) and romantic comedies of the 1990s (e. g. Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill).

Inhalt:

In this seminar we will study trends and schools in literary theory since the 1950s. We may discuss key texts by thinkers identified with formalism and structuralism, deconstruction and poststructuralism, gender studies and queer theory, psychoanalytical criticism, (Neo)Marxism and Cultural Materialism, New Historicism, postcolonial criticism and reader-response theory.
Depending on the participants personal interests, we may also consider more recent approaches like ecocriticism and possible-worlds theory or less "canonized" theories (e.g. systems theory).

The course is intended to assist students in both finding own approaches towards primary texts and in identifying mind-sets and methods applied in the secondary sources they read in their other seminars: "What theory demonstrates [ ] is that there is no position free of theory, not even the one called common sense." (V. B. Leitch).

I expect participants to actively contribute to the discussion and give small presentations.

4. Language of instruction: English
Inhalt:: Malory's Morte Darthur survives in two versions: the Winchester manuscript, which has been dated 1469 70, and the edition published by Caxton in 1485. The seminar explores the social, literary and linguistic context of Malory's Morte Darthur. Malory's encyclopaedic prose compilation of a variety of Old-French and Middle-English Arthurian sources can be read as literature and history. Medieval warfare, contemporary attitudes to violence, the late medieval forms of feudalism and patronage, the politics of love and marriage, and the tragical conflicts of friends and lovers make this "grete booke" not only a fascinating guide to a remote world but also helps to understand its alterity. Malory's Middle English is already quite different from that of Chaucer and approaches the English of Shakespeare. Thus, students who are not familiar with Middle English will find that, with a bit of practice, it is possible to comprehend it well. Vice versa, the study of Malory is a great aid for improving your reading skills in Middle English.

Inhalt:

When reading J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, readers immediately accept the necessity to destroy Sauron’s Ring of Power: after all, Sauron’s power is evil, is it not? And readers immediately accept the necessity to further the power of Gandalf the Grey when he is reborn as Gandalf the White: after all, Gandalf’s power is good, is it not? However, hardly any reader wonders about the concept of power itself: What is power? When is power created? Who holds power? Who negotiates power? Who differentiates good power from evil power? Approaching these questions, we will discuss concepts of power introduced by Mikhail Bakhtin, Michel Foucault and Roland Barthes. According to their concepts, power lies with those whose ideology is circulated, accepted and thus powerful; furthermore, power is not considered static but fluctuating, not hierarchical but democratic, not only restrictive but also liberating, not confined to a few but negotiated and executed by each individual. Based on The Hobbit (1939), The Lord of the Rings (1954-55), The Silmarillion (1977) and further short narratives by Tolkien, we will explore in detail how power and ideology come into existence when Ilúvatar and the Ainur create Arda; how power and ideology change throughout the different ages of Arda; how power and ideology are negotiated between Ainur, Elves, Dwarves and Men; and how power and ideology are negotiated within these races and between individuals.

Our discussions of power and ideology in Tolkien’s narratives will necessitate excellent knowledge of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion (Ainulindalë, Valaquenta, Alkallabêth, Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age; Chapters One to Twelve of Quenta Silmarillion); discussions will commence in the first session of the seminar. Additional reading assignments (primary and secondary literature) will be made available in VC. Although we will also discuss Peter Jackson’s adaptations, our focus will be primarily on the narratives; watching Jackson’s adaptations is thus no substitute for reading Tolkien’s narratives.

Participants are expected to actively engage in discussions, to practice their presentation and moderation skills in preparing a short presentation and an ensuing discussion and are required to write a term paper of 3.000 to 4.000 words.

Thus, we will not only read two pieces by Shakespeare, one comedy and one tragedy, we will also provide a platform for discussion or even stage a few scenes to further our understanding of what is going on. If you want to join us, you need not have any previous knowledge, only bring a copy of the play and comfortable shoes.

Inhalt:

“Old black rams,” “thick-lips,” “devils,” “misbelievers,” “strange fellows” and “waspish,” “haggard” “whores.” These exotic, evil, disobedient, promiscuous and potentially threatening characters people William Shakespeare’s plays and will concern us in this seminar on the construction of alterity (or otherness) in Renaissance drama. Renaissance public theatre was enormously influential in forming English public opinion and thus in shaping English imagining of foreigners, of people who deviate ethnically, religiously or sexually from the social norm. We will discuss which individuals and groups of society are marked as ‘insiders’ and ‘outsiders’ in a number of Shakespeare’s plays. Our focus will be on Shakespeare’s Moors, Jews and women, on topics like cross-dressing, madness and bodily deformation. In the course of the semester, we will be able to piece together a picture of how Renaissance society viewed itself.

Participants are expected to actively engage in discussions, to practice their presentation and moderation skills in preparing a short presentation and an ensuing discussion and are required to write a term paper of 3.000 to 4.000 words.

(I highly recommend the Arden editions of these plays.)

Participants must have read all four plays by the third week of the semester because we will proceed topic-wise, not play-wise! Watching the film adaptations of the plays is no substitute for reading them!

Inhalt:

The seminar discusses the origins and various developments of the most significant genre in eighteenth-century England by focussing on two main representatives of mid-eighteenth-century novel, Henry Fielding and Tobias Smollett. The novel was shaped by and helped shaping a growing market society which offered more and more people new forms education and of social and economic participation. At the same time writing, reading and selling books included activities that meant to represent, explain and advance British society and the role of Great Britain in a rapidly changing world. Among the many novels one could read the seminar will focus on two literary rivals and followers of the picaresque tradition, Tobias Smollett’s Roderick Random (1748) and Henry Fielding’s Tom Jones (1749). While Smollett was a medical doctor and adventurer, Fielding was rather interested in teaching individuals how to improve society together with his friend, the painter William Hogarth and his blind brother, the magistrate John Fielding.
