Inhalt:

Fantasy – a literary genre as indefinable as popular. Myth, fable, fairy tale? High Fantasy, low fantasy? Historical fantasy, contemporary fantasy? Urban fantasy, social fantasy, science fantasy? Animal fantasy, dragon fantasy, vampire fantasy, ghost fantasy? Utopia, dystopia? Based on fantasy written in the twenty-first and twentieth century and occasional excursions to earlier fantasy, we will discuss which themes and structures these subgenres of fantasy share in order to be labelled fantasy and what the differences in fantasy are to allow for subgenres. We will also scrutinise various concepts of fantasy (e.g. approaches by J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis, Tzvtan Todorov, Lloyd Alexander and Michel Foucault) to explain fantasy and its various functions (e.g. quests for identity, discussions of mythology, religion and science, escapism).

Our discussions of fantasy will necessitate excellent knowledge of C. S. Lewis: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1950), J. R. R. Tolkien: The Fellowship of the Ring (1954), Lloyd Alexander: The Book of Three (1964), Philipp Pullman: Northern Lights (1995), J. K. Rowling: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (1999), Neil Gaiman: Coraline (2002), Patrick Rothfuss: The Name of the Wind (2007) and Suzanne Collins: Mockingjay (2010). Discussions will commence in the second session of the seminar. Participants are expected to have access to a copy of each novel discussed in class. If the novel is published in a series, knowledge of the overall story line will be appreciated. Additional reading assignments will be made available in VC.

Participants are expected to actively engage in discussions and to practice their presentation and moderation skills in preparing a short presentation and discussion.

“It is a cliché by now to say that we live in a postmodern world, and indeed ‘postmodern’ has become one of the most used, and abused, words in the language. Yet it is striking that few people can say with any sense of assurance what that term ‘postmodern’ actually means or involves.” Thus read the – admittedly not so encouraging – opening lines of the Preface to The Routledge Companion to Postmodernism (2005). The aim of this seminar on postmodernist fiction is to give you a differentiated introduction to such fuzzy concepts like ‘postmodernism,’ ‘postmodernity,’ ‘poststructuralism’ and ‘postmodern narrative theory’ and, of course, to help you appreciate postmodernist fiction (even more!).

Postmodernism is the dominant mode of literature in the second half of the 20th century. In the course of the semester, we will find out how postmodernist fiction of the last decades has been critical of any universalizing theories (Lyotard’s ‘metanarratives’) and has put into question preconceived notions of identity and culture, time and history, gender, ethnicity and narrative voice. We will be particularly interested in how postmodernist texts both “use and abuse, install and then destabilize convention” (Hutcheon).

Students will be provided with an introduction to Jacques Derrida’s, Michel Foucault’s, Jean-Francois Lyotard’s, Jean Baudrillard’s and Zygmunt Bauman’s postmodern thinking before we move on to analyse four canonical postmodernist novels. The French Lieutenant’s Woman (John Fowles) and The Remains of the Day (Kazuo Ishiguro) will be read as ‘historiographic metafiction’ (Hutcheon), i. e. as novels with a self-reflexive – and therefore suspicious – emphasis on the processes of narrating and writing history. We will see how Jeanette Winterson’s Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit complicates the genre of autobiography and employs postmodernist strategies for feminist ends. Julian Barnes’s England, England will interest us for the way it constructs both Englishness, i. e. national identity, and individual identities. The four novels will be complemented with short fiction by David Lodge, Ian McEwan, Angela Carter and Salman Rushdie.

Inhalt:

This is a historical survey of representative modern British novels. Interest will be focused on the period from the eighteen-nineties until the nineteen-twenties. Thus, after a brief retrospective glance at their forebears, we shall read some of the main representatives of modernist novel, explore their distinctive personal styles, and deal with aspects of the modern world like the experience of "separateness" - emotional, social, and religious - and of cultural barriers, the experience of feelings of emptiness, alienation, loss, and fragmentation as opposed to the strife for aesthetic forms that either articulate and explain theseexperiences or help to restore coherence, communication, harmony, identification, and connection in art.

Whereas the realist and naturalist literature of the Victorian period had more or less agreed on certain traditional genres and styles, modernist art experimented with these conventions.

A closer look at some film adaptions of those classics will make it possible to discuss their relevance for a contemporary audience.

Inhalt:

This seminar explores one of the most popular genres of British TV, the political drama. From the list below we will choose a variety of thrillers both full of conspiracy and threatening developments and those where no blood is spilled, but rather some light shed on the machinations of politics. A few even tell the careers of well-known politicians in biopics.

A political thriller is usually set against the backdrop of a political power struggle and involves conspiracies to replace someone in power. We will mainly focus on British political affairs involving corruption, terrorism, and warfare. Reviewing the film The Interpreter, Erik Lundegaard defined thrillers: “The basic plot is an ordinary man pulling an innocent thread which leads to a mess of corruption. The corruption should be political or governmental in nature.” (2006)

Inhalt:

Starting with Empire Windrush in 1948 up to the beginning of the 21st century, the seminar focuses on the span of over sixty years of migration in the postcolonial discourse. London is depicted as the centre of culture, education, freedom, wealth, and opportunities. The pre-arrival image is derived from the colonial education that glorified the magnitude of the metropolis. After living in London for several years, migrant s dreams become shaken and shattered, as they feel left on the margins of the British society. Special attention will be paid to discrimination in schools and workplaces, police cruelty, underprivileged jobs, problems with housing, and differences in culinary traditions and climate in the migrant narrative. The seminar will analyze how novels like The Buddha of Suburbia by Hanif Kureishi, The Small Island by Andrea Levy, and Monica Ali s Brick Lane describe migrants finding themselves in the liminal space between the desire to acquire Englishness , and their disappointment and disillusionment, with the emphasis on the first and second generation of immigrants.

Inhalt:

When studying English theatre and drama during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I the overwhelming majority of students immediately thinks of one name: William Shakespeare. Unfortunately, it is often forgotten that there were also many other very popular and renown playwrights besides Shakespeare whose plays are worthwhile studying. Names such as Christopher Marlowe and Ben Jonson might sound familiar to us, but still they are not as intensely studied at university as the Bard.
This course, thus, aims at introducing and studying several Elizabethan playwrights and analysing their works in detail. We will focus on five playwrights, namely Ben Jonson, Thomas Kyd, John Lyly, Christopher Marlowe, and John Marston and the plays we examine range from Revenge Tragedy to Comedy. Moreover, we will explore Elizabethan life and worldview, study drama theory and have a look at the development of Elizabethan theatre. Since this course might be useful for those students doing Staatsexamen, there is room for guests and everybody interested in Renaissance theatre is very welcome. Inhalt:

This course is designed specifically for students of all "Lehrämter" who prepare for the written "Staatsexamen" in English Literature according to the new LPO. However, students preparing other - oral or written - final exams are very welcome, too.

Students will first revise basic terminology for the analysis of poems, narrative and dramatic texts and receive an overview of literary history. After that, each session will be dedicated to one set of "Staatsexamen" questions from previous years. The range of topics (e.g. "Thema 1: Dramatische Texte der Renaissance," "Thema 6: Narrative und expositorische Texte des 19. Jahrhunderts" etc.) will depend on the participants' interest. (Before the beginning of the semester, I will invite all participants to take part in a poll in order to find out which topics ["Körbe"] they want to prepare for their "Staatsexamen.")

Optionally, students will be given the chance either to sit a written "Staatsexamen" under exam conditions or to have a mock oral exam.

This course is addressed at students who are preparing or working at a final thesis in English or American Literature, be it a "Magisterarbeit", "Zulassungsarbeit", "BA-Arbeit" or Master's thesis. It is supposed to offer continuous support to students while preparing or writing their theses, and to give them the opportunity to present and discuss their work with other students. The course consists of plenary and individual sessions. A definite schedule will be set up in the first meeting of the class. There will be a site on the Virtual Campus; access will be given upon registration.

In the plenary sessions, we shall discuss general formal aspects and criteria of a thesis - such as possible topics, structure, suitable theoretical approaches. Participants will present (parts of) their thesis, offering it for discussion and feedback. The individual sessions consist of one-to-one tutorials in which you can discuss the argument, the progress and possible problems of your thesis with me. For students in the BA, MA and new teacher training programmes, who write their thesis in literary studies, this course provides the "Betreuungsübung". The presentation of the thesis in a plenary session (max. 30 minutes) will be graded and counts as "mündliche Modulteilprüfung" in the BA-programme. Students in the Magister- and old teacher training programmes are advised to take this course to support them while writing their theses. Depending on the native tongue of the participants, the course will be given in English or German.

The course will be taught every two weeks, with individual meetings in the weeks where we will have no common session.

Inhalt:

Joseph Conrad (1857-1924), whose real name was Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski, embarked on his literary career as he quit the service in the Merchant Navy. A native Pole and a cultural wanderer between the worlds, he wrote almost exclusively in his third language, English. Conrad became famous for stories featuring lonely, seafaring men faced with individual dilemmas of faith and conscience. His protagonists follow in the footsteps of British culture as the colonial enterprise was increasingly showing its ugly face and as technological revolutions were rendering many time-honoured traditions obsolete.

The class will focus on some of the best-known examples of Conrad’s fiction, e. g. Heart of Darkness, Youth, Under Western Eyes, and it will also deal with the later works published posthumously in Tales of Hearsay. Students with a knowledge of Polish are also encouraged to choose topics related to Conrad’s biography and the reception of his works in Poland for their papers. Inhalt:

The term magical realism has been used by writers from all over the world either as a literary device or a genre of fiction. Although there is a misconceived assumption that magical realism is specifically Latin American, yet the recognition of Latin American magical realism has pushed the quick adoption of this form of writing across the globe. Magical realism is a very effective device for writers who want to write from the perspective of the oppressed and the marginalized, for example, post colonial people, black slaves, women in patriarchal society, and so on. We should also keep in mind that magical realism has an outstanding ability to speak the unspeakable and to deal with trauma, which is extremely difficult and to some extent impossible to do through realist technique.

In the seminar, we will go through four texts and see how these writers have used magical realism to deal with different themes and to serve different purposes. In Midnight’s Children (1981), Salman Rushdie has employed magical realism to reinterpret the official version of the history of Indian sub-continent, and to let the people speak and convey their own version of history. In Nights at the Circus (1984), we will explore how magical realism has enabled Angela Carter to address pertinent social issues and to portray new women with a new way of thinking about patriarchal society, marriage and social hierarchy. Toni Morrison in her Beloved (1987), has used magical realism to deal with the dehumanizing consequences of slavery where she desires to recover a history that has been destroyed by forced silence and deliberate forgetfulness. Last but not least, magical realism in Everything is Illuminated (2002) by Jonathan Safran Foer addresses the violent and traumatic events (The Holocaust) of the life of the author’s grandfather where the tragic nature of these events implies an associated sense of loss, longing and mourning on the part of the characters.

Depending on our time, we will also have a look at the magical realist work of Gabriel García Márquez (Colombia), Isabel Allende (Chile), Laura Esquivel (Mexico), Günter Grass (Germany), and Anna Castillo (America).

Participants are expected to have access to a copy of Midnight’s Children, Nights at the Circus, Beloved, and Everything is Illuminated. Participants are expected to actively engage in discussions, to practice their presentation and moderation skills in preparing a short presentation and an ensuing discussion and are required to write a term paper of 3.000 to 4.000 words.

Inhalt:

William Shakespeare's works are well know, or should be well known, to all students of English literature. However, when reading Shakespeare some people struggle to fully appreciate his language or his brilliantly designed characters. This course aims at all of those students who would like to enjoy Shakespeare's works together with other students. Thus, we will not only read two pieces by Shakespeare, one comedy and one tragedy, we will also provide a platform for discussion or even stage a few scenes to further our understanding of what is going on. If you want to join us, you need not have any previous knowledge, only bring a copy of the play.

The term balkanisation is a coinage of the late 19c, expressing an anxiety about the disintegration of Ottoman hegemony in south-eastern Europe, and the formation of new nation states, whose political loyalties were uncertain, and thus potentially threatening to the lines of communication between Britain and its global empire. The fragmentation of the Hapsburg kingdom after 1918 gave fresh impetus to this anxiety.

After 1945 the growth of the European Union, of which Britain became a late and remains an uneasy member, together with the dissolution of its own empire, highlighted the prospects of cultural and political conflict between the original and component parts of the erstwhile imperial state: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales. The poetry of this period established the reputation of a number of poets writing in English but strongly identified with their distinctive national origins.

It reflects interesting issues of social class, cultural and national identity, the relations between periphery and metropolis, and a challenge to the very existence of a corpus of canonical verse. The period from which the poets to be discussed may be seen as a kind of overture to the contemporary medley/cacophony of conflicting voices that we now know by the terms multi-culturalism and post-colonial . We will discuss the work of four poets representative of each nation : Philip Larkin, Seamus Heaney, Edwin Morgan, R S Thomas. Thus we can explore a range of poetic styles and performances, but set in the wider social context of the period, appositely described in the political theorist Tom Nairn s provocative and seminal 1974 study, The Break-up of Britain.

When in 1948 the Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury Docks, London, and spilled out 500 Jamaicans, nobody – and certainly not the Jamaicans themselves – would have believed they had come to stay in England. Over the next two decades, half a million immigrants from former British colonies in the Caribbean arrived and settled in the "mother country" and gradually formed a visible minority. These “familiar strangers” of the first generation and especially the second and third generation of “Black Britons” have, over the course of the second half of the 20th century, largely contributed to the ethnic diversity that is today at the heart of British self-perception and that has enriched the British literary scene.

In the course of the semester, we will trace the evolution of Caribbean and Black British writing inside the UK from the early days of post-war literature of exile caught between an alienating here (England) and a nostalgic longing for home (the Caribbean) to Black British authors who self-confidently write from within the British literary canon and adopt a transcultural perspective: “If Englishness doesn’t define me, then redefine Englishness.” (novelist Andrea Levy) Students will first receive an introduction to postcolonial theory and Black British writing, before we turn to excerpts from non-fictional texts by Caribbean scholars George Lamming (The Pleasures of Exile), V. S. Naipaul (The Mimic Men) and Stuart Hall (essays on cultural identity).

The award-winning novels we will read in class centre around the topics of interracial hostility and the early migrant experience (Sam Selvon’s The Lonely Londoners, 1956), postcolonial re-writing (Jean Rhys’s Wide Sargasso Sea, 1966), slavery and its moral implications (Caryl Phillips’s Cambridge, 1991) as well as the transcultural identities of second- and third-generation Black British adolescents (novels by Andrea Levy and Charlotte Smith). Students may choose two novels by Andrea Levy, Charlotte Smith and/or David Dabydeen according to their interests at the beginning of the semester. To get the full picture of British Caribbean cultural production, we will include performance poetry by Linton Kwesi Johnson (e. g. “Inglan Is a Bitch”) and music by Benjamin Zephaniah (e. g. Rasta), the 2009 BBC movie Small Island based on Andrea Levy’s novel of the same title and Courttia Newland’s sinister - and certainly somewhat macabre - short stories (Music for the Off-Key, 2006).
