- Inhalt:
- What happens in fictional kitchens (beyond the obvious)? Can recipes be considered literature? Is it possible to read between the lines of a recipe? Can kitchens be a place of empowerment? Thinking about food in literature mostly conjures up images of comfort, domesticity, conviviality accompanied by stereotypical figures like the “Angel in the House”, the Southern “mammy” or the dutiful housewife from the fifties, busy chopping, frying and serving various foods. Fortunately, there are texts that completely subvert these ideas.
In this class we will explore some of the genres where literature and food intersect. We will indeed read “traditional” novels where recipes are mainly just a paratextual element, but in other instances it is going to be difficult to tell where the novel ends and the recipe starts. We visit food-related places where, along with the aforementioned “usual” activities, some other take place, such as politics, uprising, murder, and cannibalism. We will see how food in literature, particularly its preparation, not only touches upon but also deeply influences issues of race, religion, and gender. Reading texts that range from the Victorian era to contemporary authors,
we will focus on stories where food plays a prominent role, and that take place in a particularly hard time, especially (but not only) World War II and the Great Depression.
Concerning our methodology, we will work with the definition of literary text, building a theoretical background which includes theorists who wrote about literature and art in general (for instance Viktor Shklovsky and Wolfgang Iser) but also some very kitchen-specific theories, like Claude Lévi-Strauss' culinary triangle (which, for your information, is not about a ménage à trois in a kitchen), just to mention one notorious example.

Please be aware that in this seminar you must have the will and open-mindedness and diligence that it takes to read parts of a (very long) cookbook as if it were a novel.

- “Every little increase in human freedom has been fought over ferociously between those who want us to know more and be wiser and stronger, and those who want us to obey and be humble and submit.” (The Subtle Knife) Philip Pullman’s dusty trilogy His Dark Materials fights for human freedom in furthering knowing, wise and strong readers and therefore humans and is hence unsurprisingly dusted by the church whose institutionalised and oppressive authority is severely criticised by the author and his narrator for its origins in ignorance, obedience and submission. Institutionalised and oppressive authority – be it church, government or elitist educational system – is challenged by unsparingly demanding the readers’ active involvement in Lyra’s journey to knowledge, to free and critical thought which scrutinises the authority’s major means of oppression (ideology and power) and the passive acceptance of authority. Based on criticisms of ideology (Mikhail Bakhtin, Roland Barthes) and power (Michel Foucault) and the three pillars of fantasy literature (magic, science and religion), we will scrutinise ideologies and powers in the many worlds of His Dark Materials, welcome Dust in our thoughts and actions and hence contribute to a Republic of Heaven in which tolerance, open-mindedness and dialogue undermine and replace intolerance, narrow-mindedness and monologue.
Our discussions will necessitate excellent knowledge of Philip Pullman’s trilogy His Dark Materials (1995-2000). Knowledge of Pullman’s document collection Lyra’s Oxford (2003) and his novella Once Upon a Time in the North (2008) will be appreciated. Discussions will commence in the first session of the seminar. Additional reading will be made available in VC.

- Ever since the invention of the cinema, filmings of literary works have been popular with directors and audiences alike. All kinds of literature have been made into films more or less successfully. In this course we are going to have a closer look at filmic adaptations of 19th century novels and novellas. To do so, you need to have read all of the books covered in class so please note: This is a very intensive class since you need to have read all (!) of the books and novellas as well as have watched the films indicated below. During the seminar, many more films will come up that need to be prepared. These films include content faithful filmings as well as modern adaptations and re-writings to show how creative well-known stories have been dealt with in film.
Please sign up for the VC course for this class since there will be more information on the films that must be watched. A list of these films will be handed out in the first session.

- Inhalt:
- This course is addressed at students who are preparing or working at a final thesis in English or American Literature, be it a "Magisterarbeit", "Zulassungsarbeit", "BA-Arbeit" or Master's thesis. It is supposed to offer continuous support to students while preparing or writing their theses, and to give them the opportunity to present and discuss their work with other students. The course consists of plenary and individual sessions. A definite schedule will be set up in the first meeting of the class. There will be a site on the Virtual Campus; access will be given upon registration.
In the plenary sessions, we shall discuss general formal aspects and criteria of a thesis - such as possible topics, structure, suitable theoretical approaches. Participants will present (parts of) their thesis, offering it for discussion and feedback. The individual sessions consist of one-to-one tutorials in which you can discuss the argument, the progress and possible problems of your thesis with me. For students in the BA, MA and new teacher training programmes, who write their thesis in literary studies, this course provides the "Betreuungsübung". The presentation of the thesis in a plenary session (max. 30 minutes) will be graded and counts as "mündliche Modulteilprüfung" in the BA-programme. Students in the Magister- and old teacher training programmes are advised to take this course to support them while writing their theses. Depending on the native tongue of the participants, the course will be given in English or German.
The course will be taught every two weeks, with individual meetings in the weeks where we will have no common session.

- Inhalt:
- In this seminar we will study trends and schools in literary theory since the 1950s.
We may discuss key texts by thinkers identified with formalism and structuralism, deconstruction and poststructuralism, gender studies and queer theory, psychoanalytical criticism, (Neo)Marxism and Cultural Materialism, New Historicism, postcolonial criticism and reader-response theory.
Depending on the participants personal interests, we may also consider more recent approaches like ecocriticism and possible-worlds theory or less "canonized" theories (e.g. systems theory).
The course is intended to assist students in both finding own approaches towards primary texts and in identifying mind-sets and methods applied in the secondary sources they read in their other seminars: "What theory demonstrates [ ] is that there is no position free of theory, not even the one called common sense." (V. B. Leitch).
I expect participants to actively contribute to the discussion and give small presentations.

Excerpts from many of the texts we might consider are featured in The Norton Anthology of Theory and Criticism, which is only available in hardcover and therefore quite pricy.

- Inhalt:
- The “Middle English Romances” are no clearly defined group of texts. In fact, the anonymously transmitted Middle English tales which are usually considered to be romances are so diverse that every attempt at a brief, general definition is doomed to fail. In this seminar, we will take a closer look at a selection of these stories of love, chivalry, and exemplary heroes some of which are knights of King Arthur’s round table. On the basis of a selection of romances – such as King Horn, Sir Ysumbras, Havelok, Arthour and Merlin, Ywain and Gawain and also the very artful romance Sir Gawain and the Green Knight – we will speak about features of these texts, their background and intended audience, and, especially for Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, about possible interpretations. Although very different in intention and literary capability, some of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales – in particular The Knight’s Tale and Sir Thopas – will be discussed, too. A few romances will be introduced in parts, Alliterative Morte Arthure and Stanzaic Morte Arthur, William of Palerne, and some fifteenth-century prose romances such as The Three Kings’ Sons.
All texts will be read in modern translations or (heavily) annotated originals. In addition, selected Middle English passages will be read, translated, and discussed in class. A reader will be provided on Virtueller Campus at the beginning of term.
While no knowledge of earlier stages of the English language is required for successful participation in this course, students should bring along both interest in the history of English and exploratory spirit.
The Übung, which accompanies the Seminar (Wednesday, 13:15-14:00), is offered for students who want to attain credits in linguistics. It is designed for discussions of linguistic project work and other assignments individually and/or in small groups. Individual arrangements will be made – also, if necessary, concerning the time of the Übung. Therefore clashes with other courses scheduled for the same time slot as the Übung can be avoided.

- Inhalt:
- Intuitively, one would tend to assume that regicide (the murder of a King) is a fairly frequent plot element in Shakespeare s plays. However, even though some of his tragedies and histories end with the death of a king, regicide as an action that triggers the plot is surprisingly rare, occurring only in Shakespeare s great tragedies Hamlet and Macbeth. (Julius Caesar is a different case because ancient Rome is a republic in the first place.) The plot structure and character configuration of Hamlet and Macbeth strongly resemble each other: the King is murdered by an ambitious relative who consequently ascends the throne, and the son of the dead king must take action to secure his birthright. The main difference resides in the plays perspective: Hamlet is Macbeth seen from Malcolm s point of view, Macbeth is Hamlet from the perspective of Claudius. In hence indubitably makes sense to consider these two plays together, although their respective treatment of the theme of regicide is entirely different.
Another reason to offer a class on these two plays during the coming winter term is that two much-noted productions are currently being presented: Hamlet at London s National Theatre starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Justin Kurzel s new film version of Macbeth starring Michael Fassbender. We will of course also study other productions of the two plays, including the Hamlet films of Laurence Olivier and Kenneth Branagh and the Macbeth film by Roman Polanski. Students should also be prepared to take part in acting exercises.
This class may profitably be combined with the excursion to Burg Feuerstein in November. On Feuerstein, we will be concentrating on Hamlet; students attending the Feuerstein excursion may therefore skip the first part of this seminar and join us for the discussion of Macbeth and still obtain full credits for a Hauptseminar. (Hamlet aficionados are of course welcome to attend both...)

- A note on texts: a decent annotated version of the two plays (Arden, Cambridge, Oxford) is indispensable and a useful investment anyway. Depending on your previous acquaintance with Shakespeare s English, you may find it helpful to also purchase a Reclam edition with the English text on the left and a German prose translation on the right hand side. This permits quicker reading and may help you to develop a sense of the suspense created by the two plays.

- Inhalt:
- The seminar will talk about the representations of revolution in English literature. Although the focus will be on Tom Stoppard’s The Coast of Utopia Trilogy (2002). In these plays (Voyage, Shipwreck, and Salvage), Stoppard takes us to the long period before the October Revolution when philosophical debates between 1833 and 1866 paved the way to one of the most significant historical events in the twentieth century. The title is taken from Avrahm Yarmolinsky's Road to Revolution: A Century of Russian Radicalism (1959). The three plays premiered at the National Theatre in June and July 2002, directed by Trevor Nunn. At the centre of the three plays are the philosophical ides of the so called Russian intelligentsia personified by Michail Alexandrowitsch Bakunin (anarchist), Vissarion Grigoryevich Belinsky (Ronaricist literary critic), Ivan Turgenev (novelist), and Alexander Herzen (liberal social activist).
The trilogy will be discussed in the context of the concept of revolution in Great Britain since Edmund Burke’s Reflections upon the Revolution in France (1790) and Thomas Carlyle’s The French Revolution: A History (1837). We will also touch on nineteenth-century Russian literature and German philosophy (particularly Schelling, Fichte, Hegel and Marx).
The trilogy will be discussed along with two other Stoppard plays, Travesties (1974) and Rock ‘n’ Roll (2006) to situate it in his dramatic work.

- This course is an extracurricular course and does not offer any ECTS credits.
Anybody interested in reading and discussing Shakespeare is very welcome, regardless of their course of studies.
You need not register for this course, just come along in the first session and bring a copy of the plays.
- Inhalt:
- William Shakespeare's works are well know, or should be well known, to all students of English literature. However, when reading Shakespeare some people struggle to fully appreciate his language or his brilliantly designed characters.
This course aims at all of those students who would like to enjoy Shakespeare's works together with other students. Thus, we will not only read two pieces by Shakespeare, one comedy and one tragedy, we will also provide a platform for discussion or even stage a few scenes to further our understanding of what is going on.
If you want to join us, you need not have any previous knowledge, only bring a copy of the play and comfortable shoes.

- The Restoration period in English history started in 1660 with the restoration of monarchy in England under Charles II (1660-85) and ended ca. 1710. During this time, society and culture was characterised by abundance, luxury and looseness, contrasting the more serious time of the Interregnum and the Civil War that shaped England between 1649 and 1660. In literature, this new levity was celebrated especially in the theatres which were re-opened again after a ban of 18 years during the Puritan rule. The most popular theatrical genre was the Restoration Comedy with its wittiness and playfulness.
In this course we are going to have a look at typical motifs and concepts in Restoration Comedy. To do so, the plays listed below must be read by the beginning of the semester. This course is open to all guest auditors wanting to study English drama. Please register via the VC, which will go online in the beginning of August.
