Inhalt
On first reading Virginia Woolf, most students feel baffled - responses range from sheer enthusiasm to frank dislike. Therefore, it seems most appropriate to offer a class on Virginia Woolf, in which enthusiasts can discuss their reading experiences and perhaps convert Woolf-haters, who still may have to come to terms with an author who is among the very few canonized woman writers in English literature. In this course, we will read and discuss three of Woolf's major novels, Orlando, Mrs Dalloway and To the Lighthouse, but also consider some of her short fiction, which has been critically neglected for a long time after E. M. Forster's unfavourable verdict. Topics for presentations will include for instance the aesthetic ideals of the Bloomsbury Group, as well as texts by Woolf that are not read and discussed in detail in class.

Empfohlene Literatur
Students should obtain copies of Orlando, Mrs Dalloway and To the Lighthouse (any edition). Copies of the short stories will be circulated in class. Students not yet familiar with Woolf's style of writing should start reading before signing up for the course.
