Für Studienortwechsler, Erasmusstudenten sowie Studierende, die den Leistungsnachweis zur baldigen Prüfungsanmeldung benötigen, werden im begrenzten Umfang Plätze freigehalten. Bei Überbuchung des Seminars fällt die Entscheidung über die Teilnahme in Rücksprache mit der Dozentin/dem Dozenten.
Studierende, die an der Lehrveranstaltung als Gäste teilnehmen wollen, melden sich bitte nicht über FlexNow! sondern per Email an und erscheinen zur ersten Sitzung; erst dann kann endgültig geklärt werden, ob Gäste aufgenommen werden können.

- If you study literature, the most important thing to do is: read, read and, yes, read. But what to read, and what not to read? - This is the question many students ask (especially when it comes to prepare the reading list for the exam). After all, one is supposed to acquire a fair knowledge of a wide range of texts of different genres, from different authors and periods. So "where shall I begin?"
This course is designed to offer some help in this dilemma. And it is by no means only addressed at students preparing for their exams - but to any student of English literature, no matter whether first year or last.
In every (other) session, we will read and discuss one play from our reading list for English Literature. Proceeding in chronological order from the Renaissance to the present, we will make a gradual progress through literary history in the course of the term.
We will thus both have a close look on specific plays and learn how drama in English has evolved and changed over the centuries. Another focus will be on distinguishing drama from other literary forms like prose and poetry and other instances of performativity like film and television.
Each participant is expected to give a short presentation on the major topics of one play and to lead us into discussion. The main part of each session, however, should be devoted to close readings of scenes from the play, and to situating the text with regard to genre, period and performance history and practice.
In September, I will invite those that have already registered by then to a site on the VC. Students will be asked to participate in a survey on which play they'd like to discuss in class. However, there will be 2-3 set texts that will be announced on the VC. Students should get hold of them as soon as possible. As we will talk about a new play at least every other week, students should be prepared to do a considerable amount of reading during the term.
All participants in this class are expected to do a short presentation (even if they do not need ECTS points from this course).
