- George Bernard Shaw was an Irish dramatist, literary critic, socialist spokesman and a leading figure in 20th century theatre. The seminar will centre upon both Shaw's theory of drama and his practice. From various prefaces, letters, speeches, and other sources, the seminar tries to establish such a theory which Shaw never developed in a comprehensive single work. The plays offer a challenge of their own. Whereas Wilde’s popular comedies of manner try to evade any didactic or political “message”, this is certainly not the case in Shaw’s plays. To read and understand his plays, however, makes it quite necessary to get involved oneself – as Shaw warns his audience in the Preface to The Apple Cart (1930): “It is never safe to take my plays at their suburban face value: it ends in your finding in them only what you bring to them, and so getting nothing for your money.” Shaw's plays often seem to be deceptively explicit, but are never as ‘easy’ as they may appear on first sight. The "suburban face value" of his plays might be entertaining, but should be regarded as an invitation to explore more of their ambiguities. Shaw contributed essential ideas to modern and contemporary drama and theatre. All the plays read in class are also available as BBC performances on DVD: Arms and the Man, The Man of Destiny, The Devil's Disciple, Mrs Warren's Profession, You Never Can Tell, Pygmalion, Androcles and the Lion, Heartbreak House, The Millionairess, The Apple Cart.
