- Inhalt
- This lecture is the second instalment in a series of 6 lectures altogether, surveying the historical development of the three major genres in English Literature (poetry, drama, novel). Discussing selected authors and poems with respect to their historical and cultural contexts, the lecture covers the period from the Romantic Period to the first decades of the twentieth century. Authorwise, this means we shall begin with William Blake, move over to the two generations of Romantic poets (Wordsworth, Coleridge, Shelley, Byron, Keats) and then hover over a bunch of Victorian poets (e.g. Tennyson, Browning, D.G. and C. Rossetti, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Swinburne, Wilde, Hopkins, Hardy). As for the twentieth century, sessions will be devoted to Modernism, esp. T.S. Eliot, the War Poets, and then we'll see how far we get after that.
In order to prepare for the classes, or to read more at home, the anthologies mentioned below provide ample food for thought.
The lecture is ideally complemented with the "Übung" on "British Poetry from 1800 to 1915".
