Inhalt
This seminar focuses on problems of representing and understanding the historical, ethical, religious and human dimensions of the Holocaust in British Literature. Inspite of Theodor Adorno's statement that "writing poetry after Auschwitz is barbaric", a considerable number of poems have been written about the Holocaust. Poetry helps to approach the horrors of the Holocaust in a way that goes beyond narrative genres like the novel. Similar to their frequent filmings, novels have often provoked critical debates about the limitations of mimetic art. An exception is the poetic novel of the third-generation, Canadian author Anne Michaels. Drama has made vast amounts of documentary sources accessible in a condensed form and re-opened debates on individual guilt and responsibility in the wake of genocides in the post-Cold War period.
