- Towards the end of the 14th century Geoffrey Chaucer composed his famous Canterbury Tales, a dazzling variety of stories told by fictional pilgrims in various styles on their way from London to Canterbury. Large parts of the collection are as fascinating and entertaining today as they were at Chaucer's time. We will look at the figures (including the 'pilgrim Chaucer') and their tales both from the point of view of their literary tradition and their linguistic composition. By the end of the seminar you will have read one of the stories in the original Middle English (The Miller's Tale), which will enable you to investigate more of the original text yourself. We will also look into the reception of the Canterbury Tales in modern times, in particular on film.
While no knowledge of earlier stages of the English language are required for successful participation in this course, you should bring along both interest in the English language and literature of past ages, and above all exploratory spirit. Students can earn credits for either literary studies or linguistics, depending on their focus in the presentation in class and the seminar paper.
The critical edition which we will use in class is The Riverside Chaucer, ed. by Larry D. Benson et al. 1987. Oxford: Oxford University Press. Students are asked to familiarize themselves with the verse stories before the beginning of class. A good modern English translation is by Nevill Coghill. 1977. Geoffrey Chaucer: The Canterbury Tales. Revised reprint. Harmondsworth: Penguin; a very useful German translation with parallel texts is Fritz Kemmler, with notes by Jörg O. Fichte. 1989. Geoffrey Chaucer: Die Canterbury-Erzählungen Mittelenglisch und Deutsch. 3 vols. Munich: Goldmann. Warning: Translations which are available on the internet may not be reliable!
For those who are planning to choose Middle English in the written Staatsexamen: Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, together with Troilus and Criseyde, make up the corpus of texts on which the exam is based. Thus this seminar will be useful for the preparation for this exam, too.
The Übung by Prof. Knappe, which accompanies the Seminar (Wednesday, 12:15-13:00), is designed for discussions of project work and other assignments individually and/or in small groups. Individual arrangements will be made also, if necessary, concerning the time of the Übung. Therefore clashes with other courses scheduled for the same time slot as the Übung can be avoided.
