- Inhalt
- In this course we will approach literature using queer theory, a fairly recent critical perspective that allows for questioning heteronormativity by identifying all sexual identities as cultural constructs. As it has come to be understood in cultural theory queer theory challenges either/or, essentialist notions of homosexuality and heterosexuality within the mainstream discourse, and instead posits an understanding of sexuality that emphasizes shifting boundaries, ambivalences, and cultural constructions that change depending on historical and cultural context.
At first we will talk about the contested categories of sex and gender and trace the development of both the term queer and the history of queer theory, reading seminal essays by theorists such as Michel Foucault and Judith Butler. We will discuss how queer theory formulates racial, class and national identities in relation to sexuality and learn about Eve Sedgwick s queer re-assessment of canonical literature and attempts to establish a queer canon in literature and elsewhere. After having introduced concepts like camp and queer appreciation, performativity, queer sensibility, masculinity and queer authorship, we will move on to consider prose texts by so-called LGBTIQ writers (a category that we need to discuss), concentrating on the literary representation of same-sex desire. We will move from texts written prior to the gay and lesbian liberation movements of the late 1960s (e.g. E.M. Forster, Christopher Isherwood) to more recent texts and plays that negotiate the cultural, social and political implications of sexuality and gender from the perspective of those marginalized by the dominant sexual ethos (e.g. by Jeanette Winterson, Mark Ravenhill, Alan Holinghurst). We will pay special attention to the HIV/Aids discourse that has shaped both queer studies and queer writing from the mid-1980s onwards. Additionally we may have a look at some more popular takes on queerness in British TV (e.g. Queer as Folk) and recent film (e.g. The Iron Lady, Deep Blue Sea)
In the first half of the semester, we will read the following three SHORT novels:

- Jeanette Winterson, Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit (1985) (edition suggested for purchase: ISBN 0099935708)
After Christmas, we're going to read and discuss a fourth text, on which we will decide together at the beginning of the seminar.
