The course is designed to revise and consolidate grammar points at the level required in the Grundstudium. It also aims to deal with the problems of grammatical structures contained within the examinations in the Grundkurse. The lessons include both basic revision and more advanced grammar exercises with students required to prepare various sections at home.
Along with the grammar structures already practiced in the Grundkurse, the content of this course will form part of the grammar tested in the Zwischenprüfung/Vordiplom.

Inhalt:

Innerhalb von nicht mehr als 40 bis 50 Generationen, die zwischen der Herrschaft von König Alfred und der Gegenwart liegen, hat sich das Englische so stark verändert, dass es beim Vergleich eines altenglischen mit einem neuenglischen Text gleichen Inhalts kaum mehr als dieselbe Sprache zu erkennen ist. Viele Bereiche des Sprachsystems waren extremen Veränderungsprozessen unterworfen. Diese Tatsache und die relativ zahlreich erhaltenen Zeugnisse früherer Sprachzustände, z.B. verschiedene Bibelübersetzungen, machen das Englische zu einem lohnenden Forschungsgegenstand für die historische Linguistik.
Das Seminar bietet einen Überblick über die Entwicklung der englischen Sprache vom Altenglischen bis heute. Neben grundlegenden Aspekten der historischen Linguistik werden Kontinuität und Wandel vor allem in den Bereichen der Schriftsysteme, der Phonologie, der Morphologie, der Syntax, der Semantik und des Lexikons beleuchtet. Dabei gewinnen die Studierenden vertiefte Einblicke in den historischen Werdegang der englischen Sprache im Besonderen und in Gesetzmäßigkeiten des Sprachwandels im Allgemeinen.

Activities in English for Erasmus Students focus on these fundamental skills in the English language, reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The aim is to make participants more proficient in understanding spoken and written English, and to speak with confidence. In a variety of language exercises including basic grammar and vocabulary training, we will look at current issues of (inter-) cultural and social concern.
There will be two examinations. Participants must pass both successfully in order to receive the "Schein" for this course.
There is only one level of this course. This means that everybody can come along, irrespective of your previous ability or performance in English. Improve your command of the English language together with class mates from Chile, Spain, France, Poland or Korea, to name but a few.

The course is designed to give if not a complete overview of English grammar, at least an introduction into its most central chapters: the verb phrase, the noun phrase, adjectives and adverbs, prepositions and prepositional phrases and an analysis of simple and more complex sentence structures. Students will be tested on the content of this course in their Zwischenprüfung/Vordiplom and it is thus advisable to attend the course in the semester in which they are taking this exam.

This seminar is designed for advanced students. One aim is to provide a forum for the preparation and discussion of projects such as BA theses, Master’s theses, Staatsarbeiten and PhD projects. We will thus discuss empirical and methodological issues relevant to such studies. Secondly, there will be hands-on presentations of the new research facilities for English linguist(ic)s at Bamberg University, the focus being on the variety of newly acquired English text collections. A third goal is to discuss current trends in linguistics, which will involve discussion of recent and forthcoming publications as well as conference and book reports. Where appropriate, additional meetings with individual subgroups of the class will be offered.

Inhalt:

The linguistic discipline of phraseology deals with conventionalized combinations of two or more words (phraseological units), such as to sleep like a log, Happy Birthday!, in next to no time, of course and Let sleeping dogs lie. They are important elements in the linguistic system. While these units are not necessarily altogether stable from a formal point of view and differ with regard to syntactic transformations, they are fixed on the semantic or pragmatic level. English phraseology as the study of semantically or pragmatically fixed multi-word units is still awaiting fuller exploration in terms of the delimitation of its scope, systems of classification, frequency-based methods of research, its stylistic potential, and in particular with regard to diachronic aspects. In our seminar we will discuss these points, among others, in order to explore possibilities of English phraseological research and to carry out corpus-based research ourselves.

Vom 11.-20. Januar 2008 veranstaltet der Lehrstuhl für Englische Sprachwissenschaft eine Exkursion nach Malta. Wohnen werden wir nahe der Weltkulturerbestadt Valetta und der University of Malta. Neben den Sehenswürdigkeiten und der britisch geprägten Geschichte des Inselstaates stehen linguistische Fragen auf dem Programm, insbesondere die typischen Charakteristika des maltesischen Englischen, britische und/oder amerikanische Einflüsse und lokale Varietäten (z.B. Malta vs. Gozo). Von den Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmern wird erwartet, dass sie an Prof. Krugs Hauptseminar World Englishes: Focus on Malta teilnehmen, zudem vor Ort an einer linguistischen Feldstudie teilnehmen und ein Hintergrundreferat zu einem ausgewählten Thema halten.

Inhalt:

Designed to supplement Grundkurs I and to offer students in Grundkurs II further listening practice, this course offers students the opportunity to do listening comprehension practice in both the British and American varieties of English. In this course, which meets in the language laboratory, students will listen to recorded texts and answer questions concerning overall comprehension, vocabulary and grammar, as well as finer language points such as speaker attitude. The format of texts and questions used in this course are very similar to those in the Grundkurs I examinations. It is highly recommended that especially students taking Grundkurs I attend this course regularly as class time in Grundkurs I is mainly used for practice for other parts of the exams!
Students may complete the exercises during class time or any time the language laboratory is open, but students should definitely attend the first class meeting (in the second week of the semester) in order to receive an introduction to the class and an orientation to the equipment in the laboratory.

Inhalt:

This course is designed to introduce beginning students to the central terms and topics in current (English) linguistics. While the focus will be on present-day English, many modern irregularities (such as the differences between spelling and pronunciation or irregular verbs) can be explained in historical terms. We will therefore occasionally digress into the history of the English language in order to better understand the present. Topics to be dealt with include phonetics, phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax and sociolinguistics. One class will also be devoted to the major contrasts between English and German. In order to equip students with the basic analytical skills that are essential for future linguists and teachers alike, part of the course – especially the accompanying tutorials and workshops – will be practical in nature. We will therefore analyse authentic modern English texts from a linguistic point of view.

Linguists have been developing theories of language use for a very long time. With the rise of electronic data processing, they have been able to test their theories like never before. Electronic corpora can even be used to develop new theories, to discover linguistic details that have been overlooked and much more.

In this course, we will find out what electronic text corpora are, how they are designed and implemented, and will take a peak into the future of corpora and corpus linguistics. The corpora available to English linguists in Bamberg will be introduced. This course will bring the participants up to date with cutting edge linguistics. Special attention will be paid to the use of corpus linguistics in English language teaching.

The project-oriented nature of the course will allow participants to develop their own skills and expand their knowledge, not just of corpora and corpus linguistics, but of language usage in general. Since this is an introduction, prior experience in this area is not required. However, this course will also provide new insights into corpus linguistics for the corpus user.

Why and how does linguistic change happen? Where does our evidence about language change come from? How do languages begin and end? And is language change a symptom of progress or decay? In this seminar, we will have a closer look at historical and linguistic contacts between English and the Celtic languages. What has been the impact on English and, in particular, the varieties spoken in Ireland, Wales and Scotland, collectively known as “Celtic Englishes”? Do the “Celtic Englishes” share certain features that are not found in other varieties of English? Ireland, Scotland and Wales (and Cornwall) became England's first colonies from the twelfth century onwards. The Celtic languages that were spoken there are in decline nowadays – some more than others. Yet the varieties of English spoken there are recognised as distinctive varieties today. The main focus of this seminar is on research regarding English spoken in Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, but we will also deal with Celtic features found in other varieties of English throughout the world such as in Newfoundland English, as speakers of Celtic languages and Celtic-influenced varieties of English have been transported or emigrated to other states and continents.

There will be a folder including certain papers from the Basislektüre in the Semesterapparat from 16 October onwards. There will be a workshop day on 12 January which is obligatory for all participants.

Everyone who attends this seminar has to prepare a certain topic and do a presentation in class. Written papers have to be handed in by March 30.

Die Lehrveranstaltung soll gezielt auf die Klausur " Sprachwissenschaftliche Erläuterung eines Textes der Gegenwartssprache" vorbereiten, die vertieft Studierende (LA an Gymnasien) als wissenschaftliche Klausur aus der englischen Sprachwissenschaft im Rahmen der Ersten Staatsprüfung (LPO I, §68 (4) 1. c) wählen können. Auf der Basis des vorgegebenen und für ganz Bayern einheitlichen Lektürekanons sollen die sprachwissenschaftlichen Kenntnisse der Studierenden in Hinblick auf die Anforderungen der Klausur erweitert und systematisiert werden. Der Schwerpunkt der Übung wird darin bestehen, zu früheren Terminen gestellte Aufgaben eingehend zu besprechen. Von den SeminarteilnehmerInnen wird erwartet, dass sie bereit sind, einzelne Klausuren detailliert vorzubereiten.

Im nächsten Sommersemester wird Prof. Krug einen weiteren Vorbereitungskurs für Examenskandidaten (Lehramt an Gymnasien) halten, in welchem die Prüfungsbereiche thematisch einzeln aufbereitet werden. This exercise course investigates linguistic and literary evidence from a rather distant though very exciting past. Therefore, its focus is in the truest sense of the word ‘medieval’. Antedating the popular works of W. Shakespeare or G. Chaucer by several centuries, this enthralling and unique episode of 'British' history – and the English language in particular – is commonly referred to by modern scholars as the ‘Old English’ or ‘Anglo-Saxon’ period. Among several philologists of the 20th and 21st centuries, even the famous creator of Middle Earth, J.R.R. Tolkien, did not hesitate when determinedly calling himself a ‘medievalist’ or an ‘Anglo-Saxonist’. It is to the vernacular language and literature of the Anglo-Saxons, Germanic inhabitants of the early medieval British kingdoms, that this course will turn. It is designed to provide a graspable introduction into the grammatical system of Old English which, compared to its modern “successor”, is quite complex. Assignments are intended primarily though not exclusively for students of English linguistics who are also attending the lecture of the same title (taught by Prof. Dr. Gabriele Knappe). Together we will read, translate and explore select literary sources and shorter texts which are relevant for both classes. Although there are no linguistic requirements for this course in the first place, students might well profit from a basic mastery of Latin or French. Classes are taught in English. Yet, beginners in the history of the English language are more than welcome when exploring the intriguing and charismatic language of King Ælfred the Great and his contemporaries.

Inhalt:

The vernacular literature which was written in England before the Norman Conquest (1066) shows a fascinating variety. Different genres of poetry have come down to us, translations of Latin prose works and independent English prose, Germanic and Christian topics, tradition and innovation; and very often the authors show great art and inventiveness in reconciling and combining what appear to be diametrically opposed approaches and topics. The result is a literary treasure hoard with its very own, special character. This lecture wants to provide access to the literature of the Anglo-Saxons. As background information, an outline of their history and culture will be provided. In the main part, particular literary works will be introduced and the tension both between orality and literacy and the vernacular and Latin as the typical language of learning will be emphasized. Other topics include the medium of the manuscript and the transmission of the texts. The Old English language is the key to the Anglo-Saxon literary world. Therefore its main features regarding phonology, morphology, syntax and vocabulary will be explained in the course of the lecture.
An Übung / Tutorium which focusses on the Old English language and the critical reading of selected Old English texts (taught by Benjamin Pohl, B.A.) will accompany the lecture. The Übung / Tutorium is both a separate course and a highly recommended – though not an obligatory – supplement to the lecture.

Anmerkung: Die Teilnehmerzahl ist auf 20 Studierende beschränkt. Bei höherer Anmeldezahl haben Exkursionsteilnehmer/innen Vorrang. Sollten mehr Anmeldungen zur Exkursion als verfügbare Plätze vorliegen, erfolgt die Auswahl nach Fachsemesterzahl und Anmeldedatum. Eine verbindliche Anmeldung muss u.a. wegen der Hotelreservierung bis zum 16. Inhalt:

This course is designed to prepare issues that will be addressed during the excursion to Malta, which is due to take place from January 11 to 20, 2008. We will survey previous studies on Maltese English, and equal weight is placed on the preparation of questionnaires for the excursion. Participation is compulsory for students attending the excursion, but the course is open to others, too. A reader will be made available before the beginning of term.
