Inhalt:

This course treats American English, in today's world arguably the variety with the strongest impact within the complex of English as a pluricentric language. More specifically, we will consider its emergence and unique colonial history, its structural properties (phonology, morphosyntax, semantics, vocabulary, etc.), and its internal variability (e.g. regional and social variation).
As we go along, we will also discuss phenomena such as collquialization and linguistic Americanization, and will focus on language contact between American English and other languages. Further issues covered include its influence on other varieties of (postcolonial) English, attitudes toward American English and associated developments of globalization (cf. the term "Coca-Colonization") and its allegedly dominating role in worldwide media and pop culture discourse (e.g. hip-hop language and its relation to African-American English).

Shakespeare and his works are often discussed in seminars but usually with a focus on either a literary-cultural or a linguistic perspective.
In this seminar we will take a different approach. Collaborating across the various disciplines of our department, we will look at Shakespeare and his works from different perspectives, thus not only presenting a multifaceted approach to Shakespeare but also hopefully - providing the basis for future teachers to successfully teach Shakespeare at school.
In the linguistic part of the seminar, we will see that around 1600 the English language was in a state of flux and underwent some of its most radical structural changes. More often than not, parallels between Shakespeare's language and present-day German can be revealed. We will discuss all levels of linguistic organization, i.e. phonology, morphology, syntax and the lexicon. Overall, this should help future teachers of English (as well as their prospective students) to better understand not only the grammars of the two languages but also the underlying reasons for mistakes commonly made by speakers whose first language is German.
The next class will introduce classic approaches to Shakespeare s plays from the perspective of literary studies. Taking Macbeth as our prime example, we will study Shakespeare s use of historical and literary sources and of stylistic devices, particularly metaphor, metre and the juxtaposition of dialogue and soliloquy.

From a British Cultural Studies perspective the seminar will first position Shakespeare s plays in the context of the popular culture, folk traditions, and festivities of the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods. In a second step, we will look at Shakespeare comics as a popular medium of our own time that can profitably be used in the classroom.
From an American Cultural Studies perspective we will focus on what happens when Shakespeare s plays not only are turned into movies, but American high school movies. Taking The Taming of the Shrew/Ten Things I Hate about You (1999) and Othello/O (2001) as our prime examples, we will study the adaptation process and find out how the alterations can be utilized for the EFL classroom.
From the perspective of Language Pedagogy we will discuss the question of whether Shakespeare should or should not be dealt with at school and the challenges that go along with teaching Shakespeare in the EFL classroom. We will also look at various approaches of how to teach Shakespeare and critically discuss them.

Students attending this class can choose whether they want to earn credits in literary studies, cultural studies, linguistics or language pedagogy or for the newly established KulturPLUS module. They must be willing to do regular reading assignments and give a short presentation (including a handout, typically to be prepared in co-operation with another student). In their term papers, students may wish to check hypotheses from the literature by working with Shakespearean texts (inter alia, the complete works of Shakespeare in electronic, machine-readable form).

Inhalt:

In contrast to theoretical and empirical linguistics, which both are mainly concerned with the description of language as a system, applied linguistics (AL) investigates language issues in the (idealized) real world. In other words, it aims at describing social phenomena that involve language to a larger or lesser extent and, ideally, provides solutions to language-related problems of any nature.

AL traditionally referred to aspects of second language teaching and learning, but its focus has widened considerably and it has been influenced by neighboring disciplines such as lexicography, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, translation studies or computational linguistics.

While issues regarding language acquisition, such as developing new teaching methodologies and reliable testing mechanisms, still take center stage today, other salient subjects are the linguistically informed development of digital learning environments and further tools (for automatic grammar correction, machine translation or synthetic speech production, for instance), speech therapy, the implications of bi- and multilingualism, language attitudes, analysis of professional communication (medical language, media language, PR language, etc.), language policy and planning (including language oppression and manipulation; cf. the term linguistic imperialism), language loss as well as forensic linguistics (the analysis of linguistic evidence in crime investigations). In this course we will establish an overview of the field by addressing a range of these sub-topics.

Inhalt:

Geoffrey Chaucer was undoubtedly one of the most brilliant and popular authors of the English Middle Ages and he is to this day read, adapted and researched with enthusiasm all around the world. His works are benchmarks of medieval English literature and language alike. As such they provide perfect material to familiarise oneself with the Middle English language as well as the circumstances of literary production in 14th century England.

In the seminar, we will thus focus on investigating Chaucer s work within the wider context of his time. To achieve this, we will work with selected passages from Chaucer s famous Canterbury Tales and Troilus and Cryseide and approach questions like: What is typical for Chaucerian English? How does it influence the development of the language? Which authorities does Chaucer rely on and how is he himself received in later periods? What do the texts tell about the late medieval world view? Do the texts give information on everyday life in Chaucer s time? And why is reading Chaucer still fun today?

With the help of the background knowledge we acquire in the course, we are then able to read, analyse and translate the original texts much more adequately. Also, we will try to link all the information and piece together an overall picture of Geoffrey Chaucer and his surroundings that will be useful for any further occupation with his work and that of his contemporaries.

A basic familiarity with Middle English is helpful but not required to attend the seminar.
The topics for presentations will be distributed in the first meeting.

Description:

Set against the backdrop of the Trojan War, the love story of Troilus and Criseyde was to become one of the favourite topics in medieval literature. The story was adapted in French and Italian before it was tackled by Geoffrey Chaucer in the mid 1380s. This literary and linguistic masterpiece is the focus of attention in this seminar. We will discuss both the linguistic and the literary makeup of the text on the basis of close reading. Starting from there and always with consideration of the linguistic background, we will also investigate central topics of medieval literature such as providence, fate and free will; human (courtly) love and divine love; friendship; and the role of women.
The Übung, which accompanies the Hauptseminar (Wednesday, 14:15-15:00) is designed to discuss project work and other assignments individually and/or in small groups. Individual arrangements will be made – also, if necessary, concerning the time of the Übung. Therefore clashes with other courses scheduled for the same time slot as the Übung can be avoided. The first Übung session will not take place before the second week of term. Further information will be given in the first session of the seminar.
Before our first meeting, students are asked to familiarize themselves with the story as told by Chaucer in a modern-language translation, either in Modern English (Coghill 1971; Windeatt 1998) or Modern German (Obst / Schleburg 2000). Warning: Translations which are available on the internet are not reliable!
The critical edition which we will use in class is The Riverside Chaucer, ed. by Benson et al. (1987); the original text and other material will be made availabe on Virtueller Campus.

Inhalt:

The grammar of English (its morphology and especially its syntax) provides no prefabricated, unique ways of saying (or writing) something you want to express, but rather offers a variety of grammatical variants with identical or similar meanings. For instance, without implying a meaning difference, you can say either of the variants:

(1) The event is aimed at children and parents / parents and children.
(2) Bob and Bill have / They’ve met before.
(3) They lighted / lit the stack of wood from below.
(4) He was an alive, happy soul / ?a happy, alive soul.
(5) He checked the car whether / to see whether it was in good condition.
(6) I prevented her going / from going.
(7) Supposing that / Supposing you had good marks, would you go to university?
(8) Sandy picked up the paper / picked the paper up.
(9) He had to give the FBI his fingerprints / his fingerprints to the FBI.
(10) The other person’s nose / nose of the other person was broken.

On the other hand, there are subtle meaning differences, mirrored in the grammatical differences, between the following:

(11) They heard the clatter of hoofs / hooves from the outside.
(12) The shed burned / burnt down.
(13) The teacher helped him complete / to complete his homework.

What is interesting about grammatical variation phenomena such as (1)-(13) is the fact that they are not random, but allow us to gather insights into the ways speakers and hearers process language: Cognitive processes in language use involve an intricate network of interacting functional factors that may reinforce or counteract each other, such as semantic, phonological and various processing-related effects (e.g. those of frequency, complexity, economy, givenness). Since most of these are linguistic universals working independently of time and a particular language, they afford insights into the forces that design and shape grammar and drive linguistic change.

Grammatical variation and change have been at the focus of linguistic interest for the past few decades. Their investigation has been facilitated by the use of ever-increasing electronic text collections (corpora) in which we can explore and measure native speaker behaviour in cases where the grammar provides two or more options. An analysis of the forces underlying native speaker intuitions will have the useful side effect of sensitizing students to grammatical choices in English as a foreign language.

Students in this seminar will be expected to present a case study based on a research article and to carry out and report on a related corpus-based small-scale research project in their termpapers.

The Übung that accompanies the Seminar (Thursdays, 9:15 – 10:00 h) is designed to discuss oral presentations, handouts, practical tasks and termpaper projects individually and/or in small groups. Inhalt:

Innerhalb von nicht mehr als 40 bis 50 Generationen, die zwischen der Herrschaft von König Alfred und der Gegenwart liegen, hat sich das Englische so stark verändert, dass es beim Vergleich eines altenglischen mit einem neuenglischen Text gleichen Inhalts kaum mehr als dieselbe Sprache zu erkennen ist. Viele Bereiche des Sprachsystems waren extremen Veränderungsprozessen unterworfen. Diese Tatsache und die relativ zahlreich erhaltenen Zeugnisse früherer Sprachzustände, z.B. verschiedene Bibelübersetzungen, machen das Englische zu einem lohnenden Forschungsgegenstand für die historische Linguistik.
Das Seminar bietet einen Überblick über die Entwicklung der englischen Sprache vom Altenglischen bis heute. Neben grundlegenden Aspekten der historischen Linguistik werden Kontinuität und Wandel vor allem in den Bereichen der Phonologie, der Morphologie, der Syntax und des Lexikons beleuchtet. Dabei gewinnen die Studierenden vertiefte Einblicke in den historischen Werdegang der englischen Sprache im Besonderen und in Gesetzmäßigkeiten des Sprachwandels im Allgemeinen.

Inhalt:

An Australian either speaks like Crocodile Dundee or sounds like a British speaker? In this seminar, we’ll try to disarm such clichés and have a closer look at the English varieties in Australia. We are going to touch upon the history of Australian English and then focus on some linguistic structures that help us recognize its speakers (esp. lexicon, phonology, morphosyntax). Once we have learned those basics, we’ll move on to discuss the influence of culture on language and investigate differences in the way Australians may behave and react in certain communicative situations (so-called discourse strategies) in comparison to speakers of other cultural backgrounds. However, due to language contact with both indigenous languages and community languages of non-English migrants, Australia also offers a rich linguistic landscape which we will explore through selected phenomena of indigenous and ethnic variation.
The overall aim of this class is therefore, by studying the example of Australian English, to get an insight into fascinating aspects about linguistic variation and to apply this new knowledge in practical tasks and minor research projects.

Inhalt:

This seminar is designed for advanced students. One aim is to provide a forum for the preparation and discussion of projects such as BA theses, Master’s theses, Staatsarbeiten and PhD projects. We will thus discuss empirical and methodological issues relevant to such studies. Secondly, there will be hands-on presentations of the new research facilities for English linguist(ic)s at Bamberg University, the focus being on the variety of newly acquired English text collections. A third goal is to discuss current trends in linguistics, which will involve discussion of recent and forthcoming publications as well as conference and book reports. Where appropriate, additional meetings with individual subgroups of the class will be offered.

Inhalt:

Morphology is generally defined as a branch of grammar which studies the internal structure of words. It is thus distinguished from syntax, which deals with the rules governing the combination of words in sentences. There are two main subfields in morphology: the study of inflections (inflectional morphology) and of word-formation (lexical or derivational morphology). Apart from looking at these two areas we will discuss basic notions such as morpheme, word, lexeme and examine the semantic structure of words. Participants in the seminar will be asked to prepare individual topics and present them in class. At the end of term, there will be a written exam.

Inhalt:

This lecture is a general introduction to concepts and methodologies in sociolinguistics, with a clear focus on the English language. It covers well-established assumptions and classic findings concerning the relationship between linguistic variation and social variables (e.g. age, gender and social class ); it traces how the field has developed from the early seminal studies (e.g. by William Labov and Peter Tudgill) to the present day; and it discusses the particular methodological issues and problems involved in certain subdisciplines of Sociolinguistics, e.g. Sociophonetics and Historical Sociolinguistics. Above all, we will discuss selected sociolinguistic studies (mainly from varieties of British and American English) to see how theoretical and methodological considerations impact on research.

Inhalt:

Bei der Wahl Ihres Themas im schriftlichen Staatsexamen in Linguistik haben Sie im Studiengang Lehramt an Gymnasien unter anderem die Möglichkeit, eine mittelenglische oder altenglische Textklausur zu bearbeiten. Wenn Sie sich für die Sprachgeschichte interessieren, sind Sie in diesem Vorbereitungskurs genau richtig. Mindestens zwei Semester vor Ihrem Examen, aber gern auch schon zur Orientierung früher, sollten Sie an diesem Repetitorium teilnehmen, um Ihre Kenntnis der englischen Sprachgeschichte sowie des Mittelenglischen (und gegebenenfalls auch des Altenglischen) zu vertiefen. In dieser Übung werden zum einen theoretische Fragestellungen überblicksartig geklärt, zum anderen geht es um die praktische Bearbeitung von mittelenglischen (und altenglischen) Staatsexamensklausuren der letzten Jahre. Der Schwerpunkt wird in diesem Semester erneut auf der mittelenglischen Textklausur liegen und ist speziell auf die Fragestellungen im Examen der modularisierten Studierenden zugeschnitten. Kursunterlagen werden auf dem "Virtuellen Campus" bereitgestellt. Das Passwort wird zu Vorlesungsbeginn bekanntgegeben. Die mittelenglischen Klausuren bauen immer auf eine stark eingegrenzte Auswahl aus den Werken Geoffrey Chaucers auf, speziell aus den Canterbury Tales und aus Troilus and Criseyde, woraus zunächst eine Passage zu übersetzen ist. Daher wird zusätzlich ein Intensivblockkurs Übersetzung Mittelenglisch-Deutsch angeboten (0,7 SWS). Nicht-modularisiert Studierende sind für die Vorbereitung auf ihr Examen in diesem Kurs ebenfalls willkommen, ebenso wie Studierende anderer Studiengänge mit vertieftem Interesse an der englischen Sprachgeschichte.

Inhalt:

This course is designed to introduce beginning students to the central terms and topics in current (English) linguistics. While the focus will be on present-day English, many modern irregularities (such as the differences between spelling and pronunciation or irregular verbs) can be explained in historical terms. We will therefore occasionally digress into the history of the English language in order to better understand the present. Topics to be dealt with include phonetics, phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax and sociolinguistics. One class will also be devoted to the major contrasts between English and German. In order to equip students with the basic analytical skills that are essential for future linguists and teachers alike, part of the course especially the accompanying tutorials and workshops will be practical in nature. We will therefore analyse authentic modern English texts from a linguistic point of view.

Linguistics in daily life

Sometimes it is easy to lose track of how (linguistics) research is connected to our daily life. At one point or another, we’ve probably all asked ourselves questions like: “Why is it important to analyse XYZ?” or “Is this knowledge of theoretical interest only or does it also have real-world applications?”. Although basic research occasionally seems disconnected from reality, its essence is interwoven with our daily life.

In this seminar, we want to shed light on these often hidden connections and bridge the gap between mundane daily situations and linguistic research. Our starting point is always some aspect of our everyday life. We will first focus on the more general theories connected to the aspect. In the second step, we will link detailed studies to the broader picture.

Our selection of topics ranges from product branding, power relations in conversations and speech therapy right up to speech recognitions systems (think Siri) and data mining applications (think automatic product feedback evaluation).

Linguistik im Alltag

Im Laufe des Studiums verliert man manchmal den Überblick, wie (linguistische) Forschung mit dem Alltag in Verbindung steht. Sicherlich hat man sich schon einmal Fragen wie diese gestellt: „Welche Relevanz hat XYZ im Alltag?“ oder „Ist das von rein theoretischem Interesse oder ist eine praktische Anwendung dieser Forschung auch möglich?“. Obwohl es manchmal schwer fällt, die Verbindung zwischen Grundlagenforschung und Realität zu erkennen, so sind gerade für den Bereich der Linguistik die Bezüge zum täglichen Leben allgegenwärtig.

In diesem Seminar wollen wir die Bezüge zwischen Theorie und Anwendungsbezug spezifisch in den Blick nehmen und die Kluft zwischen alltäglichen Situationen und linguistischer Forschung überbrücken. Unser Ausgangspunkt wird dabei je ein sprachlicher Aspekt des täglichen Lebens sein (siehe unten). Wir richten unser Augenmerk zuerst auf grundlegende wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse, die damit verbunden sind. In einem zweiten Schritt sehen wir uns dann die Relevanz der jeweiligen Theorie in Detailstudien zum jeweiligen Phänomen an.

Die Auswahl der Themen reicht von Product Branding, sozialen Gefügen in gesprochenen Konversationen und Sprachtherapien bis hin zu Sprachassistenzsystemen (man denke an Siri) und Data-Mining Anwendungen (z.B. automatische Analyse von Produktfeedbacks).

The Übung Methods and Theories in Linguistics accompanies the linguistic seminar in the Aufbaumodul Sprachwissenschaft. It complements the theoretical and methodological insights and skills in this area. The Übung will introduce and put to work techniques and approaches characteristic of English Linguistics and thereby help students to acquire competence in approaching and handling data, sources of information and technologies. The topics treated will include the retrieval and processing of secondary literature, the composition of linguistic texts, the formatting of handouts and term papers in Word for Windows, the use of online dictionaries and databases, the analysis of linguistic corpora, etc.

Die Lehrveranstaltung dient der Vorbereitung auf die wissenschaftliche Klausur nach LPO I §64 (3) 1b "Aufgabe aus der Sprachwissenschaft - Linguistik synchron" für das Lehramt an Gymnasien.

Auf der Basis des bayerischen Lektürekanons zur englischen Sprachwissenschaft und weiterer Texte sollen die im Laufe des Studiums erworbenen sprachwissenschaftlichen Kenntnisse relevanter Teilbereiche (Teil A: Phonetik und Phonologie/Syntax/Text- und Stilanalyse/Lexikologie, Morphologie und Phraseologie; Teil B: Variation und Wandel) wiederholt und speziell auf die Anforderungen der Prüfung hin vertieft werden. Inhalt:

Die Lehrveranstaltung soll gezielt auf die Klausur in englischer Sprachwissenschaft (Unterrichtsfach) vorbereiten. Zielgruppe sind Studierende des Lehramts an Grund- und Mittelschulen, Realschulen und beruflichen Schulen - vgl. hierzu alte LPO (2002): LPO I, §48 (4) 1.c) und neue LPO (2008): LPO I, §44 (3) 1.a). Auf der Basis des verbindlich festgelegten und für ganz Bayern einheitlichen Lektürekanons sollen die im Laufe des Studiums erworbenen sprachwissenschaftlichen Kenntnisse wiederholt und speziell auf die Anforderungen der Prüfung hin vertieft und systematisiert werden. Besprochen werden weiterhin die Modalität der Fragestellungen bei dieser Prüfung und die zu früheren Terminen gestellten Aufgaben. Gegen Ende des Semesters werden Übungsklausuren zur Überprüfung des erreichten Kenntnisstands durchgeführt.

Inhalt:

Description: Why is English like that? Why is knight spelled with a kn and a gh? Why does English have so many synonyms like start, begin, commence or clever, intelligent, astute and bright? How come that we hardly have any – in fact only eight – inflectional endings in English today? And how are German and English related – as they obviously are, when we compare, for instance, goose and Gans, house and Haus, knight and Knecht, light and Licht?
This lecture addresses all these questions, and more. Students will be given an overview of the development of the English language from its earliest attestations in the late 7th century (Old English) until today in the context of the textual transmission and sociohistorical changes. Selected passages from different periods will be introduced, and special areas of interest are the development of sounds and spelling, grammar, vocabulary and syntax.
This lecture is particularly designed for students of BA "Anglistik/Amerikanistik", Aufbaumodul (2 ECTS). Students from other BA programmes can earn 2, 3 or 4 ECTS points for their Studium Generale (pass/fail), and visiting students can earn 2, 3, or 4 graded ECTS points. Everybody elso who is interested is of course welcome, too, and may attend the lecture as a guest without getting ECTS points.
Note that students of B.A. Medieval Studies must attend the Uebung "Englische Sprachgeschichte", not this lecture.

Inhalt:

Description:
Das Seminar behandelt die Entwicklung der englischen Sprache vom Altenglischen bis heute unter besonderer Berücksichtigung von Phonologie, Morphologie, Syntax und Lexis. Es soll überblicksartig Grundkenntnisse von der Geschichte der englischen Sprache vermitteln und dabei, vor dem Hintergrund der wichtigsten sozio-historischen Ereignisse, die tiefgreifenden Änderungen vom Alt- zum Neuenglischen deutlich machen.
Die Abschlussprüfungen finden in der letzten Sitzung statt.
