Inhalt:

This lecture presents classic topics in English linguistics and discusses their relevance for the Bavarian Staatsexamen (with a focus on LA Gymnasium). Topics and studies to be dealt with include the following (relevant synchronic State Exam sections are given in brackets):

• Variability in rhoticity (e.g. Labov’s classic sociolinguistic department store study), both from a transatlantic perspective and in terms of variation on either side of the Atlantic Ocean, thus contrasting RP and General/Standard American pronunciation with African American English, New York English; English in England, Scotland and Ireland (A1, B1),
• First- and Second-Language Acquisition (B2),
• German learner English, with a focus on the dental fricatives represented orthographically by <th> (A1, B2),
• The Great Vowel Shift (B1, also relevant for the diachronic State Exam for LA Gymnasium),
• Pragmatics, with a focus on Prototype Theory and Grice’s Cooperative Principle (B4),

Finally, a combination of all of the above plus Morphology & Lexicon (A4), Text & Style Analysis (A3) and Syntax (A2) will be offered by investigating teaching applications of music videos like Michael Jackson’s Black or White from 1991, which can be interpreted as an early contribution to diversity studies, inter alia.

Participation in this Übung is recommended for anyone with a strong interest in Linguistics. For those BA students planning on doing their Ergänzungsmodul in Linguistics, for all students doing Lehramt Gymnasium and for all MA students, the course is obligatory at a certain point in their studies, so it is recommended to do it as early as possible. These participants are required to reserve the following times and dates: Monday, 24 April 2023, 8-10 am; Thursday, 4 May 2023, 8-10 am; and Friday, 5 May 2023, 8 am-12 pm. To enable pre-planning, please register for the course in FlexNow by 20 April at the latest.

Inhalt:

The seminar will introduce students to the field of contrastive linguistics. We will first discuss the aims, methods and subject-matter of contrastive linguistics, and basic notions such as equivalence, interference, interlanguage will be dealt with. Later on, selected aspects of English and German on different linguistic levels (phonetics/phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, lexis) will be analysed and compared in more detail. Whenever possible, it is intended to discuss the relevance of contrastive linguistics for foreign language learning.

Inhalt:

Innerhalb von nicht mehr als 40 bis 50 Generationen, die zwischen der Herrschaft von König Alfred und der Gegenwart liegen, hat sich das Englische so stark verändert, dass es beim Vergleich eines altenglischen mit einem neuenglischen Text gleichen Inhalts kaum mehr als dieselbe Sprache zu erkennen ist. Viele Bereiche des Sprachsystems waren extremen Veränderungsprozessen unterworfen. Diese Tatsache und die relativ zahlreich erhaltenen Zeugnisse früherer Sprachzustände, z.B. verschiedene Bibelübersetzungen, machen das Englische zu einem lohnenden Forschungsgegenstand für die historische Linguistik. Das Seminar bietet einen Überblick über die Entwicklung der englischen Sprache vom Altenglischen bis heute. Neben grundlegenden Aspekten der historischen Linguistik werden Kontinuität und Wandel vor allem in den Bereichen der Phonologie, der Morphologie, der Syntax und des Lexikons beleuchtet. Dabei gewinnen die Studierenden vertiefte Einblicke in den historischen Werdegang der englischen Sprache im Besonderen und in Gesetzmäßigkeiten des Sprachwandels im Allgemeinen. In diesem Kurs werden wir die Multitouch-Displays des SprachenLLabs nutzen, um uns in Gruppenarbeit mit Anwendungsaufgaben zu Aspekten des Sprachwandels auseinanderzusetzen.

Participation in this Übung is recommended for anyone with a strong interest in Linguistics. For those BA students planning on doing their Ergänzungsmodul in Linguistics, for all students doing Lehramt Gymnasium and for all MA students, the course is obligatory at a certain point in their studies, so it is recommended to do it as early as possible. Inhalt:

Unparalleled by any other language, English has spread all around the globe, constituting a decisive force in and product of globalization alike. Most various geographical and social contexts have led to a global diversification of English with new local varieties emerging in situations of language contact and change. At the same time, speakers from different linguacultural backgrounds use English as a shared lingua franca, adapting the language to meet individual situational demands.
This seminar will address questions surrounding the use of English as a global language: Which factors have contributed to the worldwide spread of English? How does English interact with other languages? What characterizes individual varieties of English? How do speakers employ English in lingua franca interactions to secure communicative success? Which attitudes accompany the use of English as a global language? And how does a conceptualization of English as a global language affect English learning and teaching?
The course introduces major methods and findings in the field of English as a global language and discusses didactic implications. Participants will not only explore the English language as employed in various settings, but also reflect on their own use of and attitudes towards English as a global language.

This seminar is designed for advanced students. One aim is to provide a forum for the preparation and discussion of projects such as BA theses, Master's theses, Staatsarbeiten and PhD projects. We will thus discuss empirical and methodological issues relevant to such studies. Secondly, there will be hands-on presentations of the new research facilities for English linguist(ic)s at Bamberg University, the focus being on the variety of newly acquired English text collections. A third goal is to discuss current trends in linguistics, which will involve discussion of recent and forthcoming publications as well as conference and book reports. Where appropriate, additional meetings with individual subgroups of the class will be offered.

It will provide a description and classification of speech sounds together with a discussion of all English vowels, semi-vowels and consonants. Particular attention will be paid to the problems German learners have with English pronunciation. Students will learn to use the IPA system to transcribe English texts, including the use of strong and weak forms, lexical and syntactic stress. In this interdisciplinary seminar, we will explore the benefits of a contrastive approach to linguistic research, since comparing two languages almost inevitably leads to metalinguistic insights. Despite (or because of) their close relationship, this is also true of English and German. We will focus on areas of grammar characterized by cross-linguistic divergences as well as intra-linguistic variation. For instance, individual sessions will be devoted to inflectional categories of nouns and verbs, lexical and grammatical instantiations of the progressive aspect, periphrastic constructions with tun/do, gender and number concord, relativizer choices, non-standard quotatives (e.g. ich so/I was like), and preposition placement. Students will be introduced to empirical methods for investigating spoken and written language, in particular the analysis of large text databases a.k.a. corpora.

English and German will alternate as languages of instruction. Thus participants should be conversant in both languages, but need not be enrolled for both subjects. While students of German and English Linguistics can concentrate on research on the language of their choice, they will be encouraged to engage in interdisciplinary discourse, aiming to communicate expert perspectives to a non-expert audience and to uncover intersecting insights.

In unserem interdisziplinären Seminar werden wir uns die Vorteile eines kontrastiven linguistischen Ansatzes zunutze machen – fast zwangsläufig führt Sprachvergleich zu metasprachlichen Erkenntnissen. Trotz oder gerade wegen ihrer engen Verwandtschaft können wir solche Erkenntnisse bei einem Vergleich des Englischen und Deutschen erwarten. Wir werden uns auf Bereiche der Grammatik konzentrieren, die sowohl durch Divergenzen als auch durch Variation gekennzeichnet sind. So werden einzelne Sitzungen den Flexionskategorien von Substantiven und Verben, lexikalischen und grammatischen Ausprägungen der Aspektsysteme, periphrastischen Konstruktionen mit tun/do, der Gender- und Numeruskongruenz, der Wahl der Relativpronomina, nicht-standardisierten Quotativen (z.B. ich so/I was like) und der Position von Präpositionen gewidmet sein. Teilnehmer:innen werden in empirische Methoden zur Erforschung der gesprochenen und geschriebenen Sprache eingeführt, insbesondere in die Analyse von Großkorpora.

Die Unterrichtssprachen sind abwechselnd Englisch und Deutsch. Daher sollten Teilnehmer:innen beide Sprachen beherrschen. Eine Einschreibung für beide Studiengänge ist nicht erforderlich. Inhalt:

This course is designed to introduce beginning students to the central terms and topics in current (English) linguistics. While the focus will be on present-day English, many modern irregularities (such as the differences between spelling and pronunciation or irregular verbs) can be explained in historical terms. We will therefore occasionally digress into the history of the English language in order to better understand the present. Topics to be dealt with include phonetics, phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax and sociolinguistics. One class will also be devoted to the major contrasts between English and German. In order to equip students with the basic analytical skills that are essential for future linguists and teachers alike, part of the course especially the accompanying tutorials and workshops will be practical in nature. We will therefore analyse authentic modern English texts from a linguistic point of view.

Inhalt:

Variation and change are central properties of all languages. Thus, rather than speaking of one "English", it is more adequate to conceive of multiple "Englishes" or at least of English as a pluricentric language. In this class, we'll take a synchronic and diachronic look at the fact that English is by no means a monolithic entity, but has evolved and changed in the course of time, leading to present-day variation on all linguistic levels.

More specifically, we'll consider general processes at work in language change (such as language contact, standardization and grammaticalization), take a look at different present-day varieties of English (such as standard varieties, traditional dialects and postcolonial Englishes) and corresponding sociolinguistic factors, and analyze the influence of sociohistorical developments. In addition, we'll critically assess views of language change as language decay and, by way of considering key studies in the field, examine different research approaches used.

Inhalt:

Journalistic media are an everyday resource, providing information about events outside of our immediate horizon of experience. Hence journalism is regarded as the most important textual system of modernity. This course approaches journalism from a linguistic perspective to explore what exactly the features of this textual system are. Throughout the semester we will contrast the compositional structure of different journalistic genres (e.g. news, feature, interview, and commentary), and discuss how their communicative modes differ depending on the publishing context. We will illustrate how journalistic language differs between various newspapers (e.g. the THE GUARDIAN or THE SUN), and how communication is shaped by technological variables, if we compare print to broadcast or online journalism. In order to explore these aspects hands-on, this course will familiarize students with qualitative and quantitative methods of analysis (such as (critical) discourse analysis and register analysis), and will introduce them to relevant broader concepts (such as audience design, multimodality, and general principles and features of written and spoken communication).

Description:
The English language as it was spoken (and written) in the Middle Ages, that is, roughly in the centuries before the year 1500, is much different to Present-day English. This is particularly true of Old English, which is the term we use for English spoken in the period before the Norman Conquest of 1066. The forms of English spoken in the Middle English period are more akin to Present-day English and are much easier to understand for today's speakers. In recent times we observe a fascination with medieval culture and authentic medieval languages in popular culture, which particularly focuses on Old English (books, movies, TV-series -- think of Tolkien and Vikings!). This class is intended to give students a guided tour to Old and Middle English as it is transmitted in authentic sources, but we will also discuss recent popular adaptations and made-up dialogues. We will explore the structure of these language stages before the backdrop of historical and cultural developments. Together we will discover similarities and differences between Old and Middle English on the one side and Present-day English (and also German) on the other, regarding sounds, words, grammar and meaning. Thus, for all those with exploratory spirit and interest in the earliest stages of the English language this class will prepare the ground that they may venture on their own paths of discovery. Master students and all those wishing to obtain 8 ECTS-credits in this class are asked to contribute additional scholarly depth on the Old and Middle English language systems and issues of language change through their contibutions, in particular their oral presentations.

Knowledge of earlier stages of the English language is no requirement for participation in this course -- everyone is welcome!

The Übung "Methods and Theories in Linguistics" accompanies a linguistic seminar (for BA: Ergänzungsmodul Sprachwissenschaft; for LA Gym: Vertiefungsmodul Englische Sprachwissenschaft; for MA: Mastermodule English Linguistics). It complements the theoretical and methodological insights and skills in this area. The Übung will introduce and put to work techniques and approaches characteristic of English Linguistics and thereby help students to acquire competence in using specific sources of information and technologies as well as in collecting, analysing and visualizing their own empirical data. The topics treated will include aspects of academic writing (handling secondary literature, referencing, structuring a termpaper), the analysis of linguistic corpora and other databases, the use of online dictionaries, the construction of questionnaires, the analysis of audio-recorded data, the interpretation of experiments, etc.

Inhalt:

This course is designed for students working on (smaller or larger) research projects in English Linguistics connected to the instructor's seminars, Uebungen, and beyond. This includes supervision of the theoretical and empirical parts of presentations, term papers and final theses. It gives students the opportunity to discuss their own research with the instructor in small groups or individually. The course covers analytic procedures (data collection and preparation, presentation and visualization) and formal aspects (such as style sheet and referencing), and it provides support in meeting the structural and administrative requirements of a presentation, paper or thesis. The sessions consist of tutorials in which students receive individual feedback on the structure, argument, progress and possible problems of their academic work. Description
The musical and thematic range of (pop) songs, which are viewed as a valuable addition to the foreign language classroom, is vast and offers manifold opportunities for English language education with regard to language acquisition, cultural learning, and the development of language awareness and critical literacy. In this seminar, we will combine linguistic and pedagogic/didactic perspectives on English (pop) songs. We will focus on the following two broader aspects: (i) analysing linguistic features and production circumstances of song lyrics as a performed text type, and (ii) integrating songs into English language education by investigating theoretical concepts, research findings, and practical guidelines to develop language-related and general educational competences. This class will also involve the exploration of songs with a thematic focus, for instance looking into the following pedagogic endeavours:
integrating global education into English lessons through eco-songs,
raising awareness of social injustices through songs that deal with diversity and social justice themes, and
fostering mental health literacy through mental health songs.

Participants will have the opportunity (i) to engage with relevant research and corpora, (ii) to analyse (self-selected) songs and their lyrics, and (iii) to reflect on methodological issues for the classroom thus combining linguistic and pedagogic foci.

Please note:

The seminar will take place in the digital language lab (SprachenLLab) on six Mondays (8-12 am), so there will be plenty of opportunities for students to analyse songs as well as experiment with, evaluate, and develop song-based materials in a digital environment.
As the seminar is offered in an intensive block course format, participants must be prepared to devote a considerable amount of time to attendance and coursework during the allocated working phases.

Mindestens zwei Semester vor Ihrem Examen, aber gern auch schon zur Orientierung früher, sollten Sie an einem Kurs teilnehmen, der Sie auf die schriftliche Examensprüfung in englischer Sprachwissenschaft vorbereitet. Bei der Wahl Ihres Themengebiets haben Sie im Studiengang Lehramt an Gymnasien unter anderem die Möglichkeit, eine mittelenglische oder altenglische Textklausur zu bearbeiten. Wenn Sie sich für die Sprachgeschichte interessieren, sind Sie in diesem Vorbereitungskurs genau richtig. Um Ihre Kenntnis der englischen Sprachgeschichte und des Mittelenglischen aufzubauen und zu vertiefen, ist es vollkommen ausreichend, die Übung Englische Sprachgeschichte besucht zu haben. Weitere Vorkenntnisse sind nicht nötig. Der Schwerpunkt wird in diesem Semester erneut auf der mittelenglischen Textklausur liegen.

Hier ein paar Fakten, die Ihnen bei der Entscheidung helfen können, ob dieser Kurs vielleicht etwas für Sie wäre: Die schriftliche Examensprüfung besteht, wie bei der neuenglischen Textklausur auch, aus Fragen zu einer Textpassage und einem Aufsatzthema. Anders als bei der neuenglischen Klausur können Sie aber die Texte der mittelenglischen Klausur im Vorfeld genau vorbereiten, denn die Passagen stammen immer aus einem festgelegten Textkorpus. Dieses besteht aus einer (übersichtlichen) Auswahl aus den Werken Geoffrey Chaucers; genauer: zehn Geschichten der Canterbury Tales und die ersten beiden Bücher von Troilus and Criseyde. Chaucers Londoner Englisch des 14. Jahrhunderts ist die Grundlage des heutigen englischen Standards und bietet daher die am leichtesten verständliche mittelenglische Varietät.

In der Examensübung werden zum einen über die Übung Englische Sprachgeschichte hinausgehende theoretische Fragestellungen überblicksartig geklärt, hauptsächlich geht es aber um die praktische Bearbeitung von mittelenglischen Staatsexamensklausuren der letzten Jahre. Die erste Frage zum Text ist immer eine Übersetzung ins Deutsche, weswegen zusätzlich zu der Examensübung eine Übung in mehreren kleinen Blöcken (insgesamt eine Semesterwochenstunde) zur Übersetzung Mittelenglisch-Deutsch angeboten wird.

Studierende anderer Studiengänge mit vertieftem Interesse an der englischen Sprachgeschichte sind in diesem Kurs ebenfalls willkommen. Kursunterlagen werden auf dem "Virtuellen Campus" bereitgestellt. Das Passwort wird zu Vorlesungsbeginn bekannt gegeben.

Description:
Why is English like that? Why is knight spelled with a kn and a gh? Why does English have so many synonyms, like start, begin, commence or clever, intelligent, astute and bright? How come that we hardly have any, in fact only eight, inflectional endings in English today? And how are German and English related, as they obviously are --- just compare, for instance, goose and Gans, house and Haus, knight and Knecht, light and Licht?
This lecture addresses all these questions, and more. Students will be given an overview of the development of the English language from its earliest attestations in the late 7th century (Old English) until today in the context of the textual transmission and sociohistorical changes. Selected passages from different periods will be introduced. Special areas of interest are the development of the vocabulary, sounds and spelling, morphology and syntax.
This lecture is particularly designed for students of BA "Anglistik/Amerikanistik", Aufbaumodul (2 ECTS). Students from other BA programmes can earn 2 or 4 ECTS points for their Studium Generale (pass/fail), and visiting students can earn 2 or 4 ungraded (pass/fail ) or graded ECTS points. Everybody else who is interested is of course welcome, too, and may attend the lecture as a guest without ECTS points.
Note that students of Lehramt Gymnasium and of B.A. Medieval Studies in their Basismodul must attend the Uebung "Englische Sprachgeschichte", not this lecture.

Suitability for modules:
This course is suitable for all degree courses involving English Linguistics (Lehramt, BA, MA, etc.) where 2, 3, 4 or 6 ECTS are required. Students enrolled in the MA English and American Studies can take part in this course, but they can only get it credited as part of the Master s Thesis Module in Linguistics ("Oberseminar"). That means, it will not count towards your Master Module, Consolidation Module or Profile Module.

Combination with "Methods and Theories in Linguistics":

Participation in this Übung is recommended for anyone with a strong interest in Linguistics. Do you sometimes wonder whether an expression you have heard or read is actually appropriate to use in a certain context? Do you regularly rack your brains for a good way of expressing your ideas in an essay or term paper? Do people sometimes ask you to proofread their texts but you find it hard to judge their language? Are you considering a career in teaching English but feel daunted by the prospect of corrections piling up on your desk? Know-how of the right digital resources can help you with these tasks.

This practical course aims to enable participants to use corpus tools to assess their own and other writers' text production. Corpora are digital text collections representative of one or more than one regional variety, genre and text type, which can be accessed through various interfaces, many of them freely available online. Corpus skills put users in a position to check whether a certain word, collocation or syntactic structure conforms to the norms of competent language users, and they provide insights into what these norms are (in terms of registers and regional varieties). Participants will build up their competence as corpus users, developing simple and complex corpus searches and critically monitoring query results and numerical output. We will also explore ready-made corpus-based tools designed to help with (academic) writing tasks.

We will exploit the LanguageLLab (LU19/00.09) and its new array of tablet devices to experience a realistic digital classroom setting. The outcome will be evaluated and compared to the outcomes of comparable courses documented in the literature on (advanced) English language teaching.

Diese Lehrveranstaltung ist für alle Studiengänge (Lehramt, BA, MA usw.) geeignet, in denen 2, 3, 4 oder 6 ECTS im Rahmen eines Seminars oder einer frei wählbaren Übung in der englischen Sprachwissenschaft erforderlich sind.

In the early weeks of term, we offer an introductory block familiarizing students with linguistic research methods (the Übung "Methods and Theories in Linguistics"): https://univis.uni-bamberg.de/form?dsc=anew/lecture_view&lvs=guk/angl/engls/method&anonymous=1&founds=guk/angl/engls/method&sem=2023s&codeset=utf8. Participation in this Übung is recommended for anyone with a strong interest in Linguistics. For those BA students planning on doing their Ergänzungsmodul in Linguistics, for all students doing Lehramt Gymnasium and for all MA students, the course is obligatory at a certain point in their studies, so it is recommended to do it as early as possible. These participants are required to reserve the following times and dates: Monday, 24 April 2023, 8-10 am; Thursday, 4 May 2023, 8-10 am; and Friday, 5 May 2023, 8 am-12 pm. To enable pre-planning, please register for the course in FlexNow by 20 April at the latest.

Inhalt:

The language of pop cultural artifacts, and especially the language of (fictional) film and television, collectively labelled "telecinematic discourse", has increasingly attracted attention on part of linguists. Researchers have recognized that telecinematic texts are an important representation of our world, potentially also impacting on social realities. In addition, it has emerged that studies of relevant texts have to account for specific production and consumption constraints. Accordingly, telecinematic discourse cannot be viewed as a poor or deteriorated version of "real" conversation, but rather represents carefully manipulated language with the aim to achieve certain comic or dramatic effects. Further, telecinematic discourse has also been studied from a more critical angle, for instance to determine whether and how linguistic, gender-related, and ethnic stereotypes are purported. All this makes pertinent textual varieties worth studying in their own right. To deal with the aforementioned issues, this class is conceptualized as "scholarship-in-action" and will often rely on analyses of concrete telecinematic material. In passing, central linguistic terminology and research areas that have considered telecinematic discourse (e.g. pragmatics, sociolinguistics, stylistics, etc.) will be revisited and recently established linguistic resources, such as the Movie Corpus (https://www.english-corpora.org/movies/), will be introduced. Due to the nature of the artifacts studied, related topics such as multimodality and the use of telecinematic discourse as a resource in language education will also be tackled.

Inhalt:

Dieser Workshop bereitet Sie gezielt auf das Staatsexamen Linguistik synchron (LA Gymnasium) vor und sollte direkt vor dem Examen, also im gleichen Semester, belegt werden. In der ersten Sitzung erhalten Sie praktische Tipps für die schriftliche Prüfung. Zudem haben Sie die Gelegenheit, sich intensiv auf den A-Teil vorzubereiten. Zu den klassischen Prüfungsaufgaben (Transkription, Satzanalyse, morphologische Analyse) erhalten Sie individuelles Feedback bezüglich Form und Inhalt. In der zweiten Sitzung schreiben Sie eine Probeklausur (A- und B-Teil), die Sie etwa eine Woche später im Einzelgespräch zurückbekommen.

This workshop is designed to give to those who need it an additional chance to improve their exam preparation for "English Phonetics and Phonology", offering them more transcription practice. Participation is not obligatory and does not earn you any ECTS points.

The course will consist of two practice sessions where we will discuss exercises that participants should have prepared in advance. Student transcriptions will be corrected together. There will also be time to discuss further questions and problems.

Inhalt:

Der Workshop richtet sich an Lehramtsstudierende, die nach diesem Semester ihr Staatsexamen in Englisch ablegen wollen. Neben Strategien zur Vorbereitung und Durchführung der Übersetzungsklausur im Staatsexamen wird der Workshop Gelegenheit zur Erweiterung des prüfungsrelevanten Wortschatzes und zur vertieften Beschäftigung mit syntaktischen Fehlerschwerpunkten bieten. Anhand von praktischen Beispielen aus vergangenen Prüfungen soll erarbeitet werden, was eine gelungene Übersetzung ausmacht. Die Teilnehmenden können individuelle Beratungen zur Prüfungsvorbereitung auf der Grundlage einer Probeklausur in Anspruch nehmen.
