Inhalt:

In the moments before his death, [Trayvon] Martin was talking on his cellphone with his friend Rachel Jeantel. Jeantel described at trial how she heard Martin trying to get away from Zimmerman, not assault him. Her testimony should have made her the prosecution s star witness, casting doubt on Zimmerman s claims of self-defense. Yet, because she spoke in AAE [African American English], jurors reported that she was hard to understand and not credible [ ] [D]uring 16 hours of jury deliberation no one mentioned Jeantel s testimony at all. Her voice didn t matter (King & Kinzler 2020).
This excerpt from the Los Angeles Times article Bias against African American English speakers is a pillar of systemic racism clearly shows the interlinkage of racism and language use, which we will put special emphasis on in this seminar from linguistic profiling and appropriation to language policies and ideologies in education.
More generally, we will study Black English, its history, its speakers, its linguistic features and variation. We will encounter and analyze various settings and text types: From the movie screen to the courtroom, from rap lyrics to academic writing, from the blackboard to social media because Black English Matters!

Inhalt:

The lecture provides an overview of the many ways in which the two major national varieties of English differ. As is well-known, British and American English diverge systematically in the pronunciation and distribution of certain phonemes and allophones. Similarly well-known are differences in the spelling and vocabulary, which happen to provide a frequently discussed topic in the teaching of English. Above and beyond such phonetic/phonological, orthographic and lexical differences, recent research has shown that on the grammatical level, there is also a not-to-be-underestimated number of major and minor contrasts. These include differences in word formation, grammatical morphology, word order as well as syntactic relations.

The lecture will contextualize linguistic contrasts with a view to the historical evolution of the relationship between British and American English and pragmatic differences characterizing speakers' linguistic behaviour. It will equally aim at discovering system-inherent orientations that account for variety-specific tendencies. For this purpose, the diachronic dimension of the contrasts will be given an important place, and issues such as the myth of the colonial lag, the world-wide leadership of American English, internationalization and colloquialization will crop up repeatedly.

In its final part, the lecture will focus on choices made by users of English as an international lingua franca and the relevance of the descriptive differences for the teaching of English in secondary and tertiary education.

Modern lexicography owes a large debt to the corpus revolution (Rundell 2008), and almost every aspect of the practice of dictionary-making is nowadays informed by corpus analysis (Walter 2010). In this seminar, we will review linguistic corpora (i.e. large-scale computer-readable text databases) and techniques of corpus analysis, as well as types of dictionaries and aspects of their use and their compilation (i.e. lexicography). The lexicographic works to come under scrutiny will range from the monumental Oxford English Dictionary to learner dictionaries, and from monolingual dictionaries to bilingual ones. Standard print dictionaries and electronic dictionaries by established publishers will be explored as well as collaborative dictionaries on the Internet. We will compare the assets and shortcomings of different channels of distribution (print vs. electronic) and modes of compilation (expert-built and crowd-sourced). Participants will be expected to conduct corpus-based studies to evaluate the extent and adequacy of information available from different dictionaries against actual usage of selected example words. The seminar aims to equip them with the theoretical background, methodological expertise and critical awareness requisite for competent users of corpora as well as dictionaries.

Inhalt:

This course is designed for students working on (smaller or larger) research projects in English Linguistics connected to the instructor's seminars, Uebungen, and beyond. This includes supervision of the theoretical and empirical parts of presentations, term papers and final theses. It gives students the opportunity to discuss their own research with the instructor in small groups or individually. The course covers analytic procedures (data collection and preparation, presentation and visualization) and formal aspects (such as style sheet and referencing), and it provides support in meeting the structural and administrative requirements of a presentation, paper or thesis. The sessions consist of tutorials in which students receive individual feedback on the structure, argument, progress and possible problems of their academic work. This course is the first instalment of a new transdisciplinary series of yearly online lectures offered jointly by the partner universities of the European Joint Master's Programme in English and American Studies. The first edition of Spanning regions and disciplines: lecture series of the European Joint Master's Programme in English and American Studies will deal with the topic of diversity from linguistic, cultural and literary perspectives and is available not only to MA students of both study tracks but also to students of Lehramt Realschule (as part of their Zusatzmodul Literaturwissenschaft) or Lehramt Gymnasium (as part of their Vertiefungsmodul Sprachwissenschaft oder Literaturwissenschaft) and BA students (Studium Generale).
The lecture series is an outstanding opportunity to interact with a group of international students and to get to know professors from our partner universities. Diese Lehrveranstaltung behandelt die Entwicklung der englischen Sprache vom Altenglischen bis heute unter besonderer Berücksichtigung von Lexikologie und Lexikographie, Phonologie, Morphologie und Syntax. Sie vermittelt überblicksartig Grundkenntnisse von der Geschichte der englischen Sprache und macht dabei, vor dem Hintergrund der wichtigsten soziohistorischen Ereignisse, die tiefgreifenden Änderungen vom Alt- zum Neuenglischen deutlich.

Inhalt:

Speakers of English have always been in contact with speakers of other languages. Thus, foreign languages have influenced the development and growth of English. Vice versa, English has influenced the development and growth of other languages. In this class we will analyse different scenarios of language contact and their effects both in general and with particular regard to past and present stages of English. Questions to be discussed include the influence of Celtic, Scandinavian, French and Latin on English in the pre-modern era and beyond as well as the impact of English on other languages from Early Modern times until the present day. This includes the effects of language contact in colonial settings, which may result in the birth of pidgins and creoles, such as "Tok Pisin" in Papua New Guinea. Further topics are, among others, the mechanisms of contact-induced change and the possible role of English as a contact language in the future.

Inhalt:

This course is designed for students working on (smaller or larger) research projects in English Linguistics connected to the instructor's seminars, Uebungen, and beyond. This includes supervision of the theoretical and empirical parts of presentations, term papers and final theses. It gives students the opportunity to discuss their own research with the instructor in small groups or individually. The course covers analytic procedures (data collection and preparation, presentation and visualization) and formal aspects (such as style sheet and referencing), and it provides support in meeting the structural and administrative requirements of a presentation, paper or thesis. The sessions consist of tutorials in which students receive individual feedback on the structure, argument, progress and possible problems of their academic work. For final theses, please contact the instructor at your earliest convenience to discuss your topic and make individual appointments.

Inhalt:

The story of English in the Pacific started with Captain Cook’s arrival in Australia in 1770. In this course we will focus on varieties of English that have since evolved, incorporating linguistic, historical, political and sociocultural aspects, as well as their relationship with indigenous languages spoken in the respective countries. We will study so-called L1 varieties, such as Australian English and New Zealand English, and their dialects; L2 or contact varieties, which show the reciprocal influence of indigenous languages and English, for example in Fiji; and creoles, such as Tok Pisin (spoken in Papua New Guinea) and Bislama (spoken in Vanuatu).

Inhalt:

The seminar will introduce students to the study of the English lexicon. After the discussion of a few basic terms such as linguistic sign, morpheme, lexeme we will first be concerned with word-formation (the patterns used to form lexemes in English) and semantic structures within the lexicon (e.g. synonymy, polysemy, lexical fields etc.). In the second half of the term we will deal with the applied branch of lexicology, i.e. lexicography. We will analyse different types of dictionaries and discuss their individual advantages and drawbacks. Finally, it is intended to examine the functions of dictionaries in foreign language learning. Participants in the seminar will be asked to prepare individual topics and present them in class. At the end of term, there will be a written exam on lexicological aspects of English.

This seminar is designed for advanced students. One aim is to provide a forum for the preparation and discussion of projects such as BA theses, Master's theses, Staatsarbeiten and PhD projects. We will thus discuss empirical and methodological issues relevant to such studies. Secondly, there will be hands-on presentations of the new research facilities for English linguist(ic)s at Bamberg University, the focus being on the variety of newly acquired English text collections. A third goal is to discuss current trends in linguistics, which will involve discussion of recent and forthcoming publications as well as conference and book reports. Where appropriate, additional meetings with individual subgroups of the class will be offered.

Vom 11. bis 18. November 2023 veranstaltet der Lehrstuhl für Englische Sprachwissenschaft eine Exkursion nach Malta. Inhalt:

Language is a peculiar thing. There are so many hidden patterns motivating our choice of words. Have you ever wondered why certain words, seemingly neutral, carry subtle connotations? Or consider these two phrases: 'the car's color' and 'the color of the car'. Both are grammatically correct, yet we instinctively opt for one over the other without clear rationale. As empirical linguists, our curiosity goes beyond mere observation. We want to know what motivates our choices and describe the patterns in greater detail. To accomplish this, we require data - a big pile of data. A linguistic corpus is just that. Nowadays, most corpora offer user-friendly interfaces that facilitate pattern exploration. In a hands-on manner, this seminar will introduce you to key concepts and methods in corpus linguistics and how corpora can be used in English linguistics. We will review selected corpus-based studies and retrace the steps involved.

Inhalt:

This course is designed to introduce beginning students to the central terms and topics in current (English) linguistics. While the focus will be on present-day English, many modern irregularities (such as the differences between spelling and pronunciation or irregular verbs) can be explained in historical terms. We will therefore occasionally digress into the history of the English language in order to better understand the present. Topics to be dealt with include phonetics, phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax and sociolinguistics. One class will also be devoted to the major contrasts between English and German. In order to equip students with the basic analytical skills that are essential for future linguists and teachers alike, part of the course especially the accompanying tutorials and workshops will be practical in nature. We will therefore analyse authentic modern English texts from a linguistic point of view.

Description:
The Übung "Methods and Theories in Linguistics" accompanies a linguistic seminar (for BA: Ergänzungsmodul Sprachwissenschaft; for LA Gym: Vertiefungsmodul Englische Sprachwissenschaft; for MA: Mastermodule English Linguistics). It complements the theoretical and methodological insights and skills in this area. The Übung will introduce and put to work techniques and approaches characteristic of English Linguistics and thereby help students to acquire competence in using specific sources of information and technologies as well as in collecting, analysing and visualizing their own empirical data. The topics treated will include aspects of academic writing (handling secondary literature, referencing, structuring a termpaper), the analysis of linguistic corpora and other databases, the use of online dictionaries, the construction of questionnaires, the analysis of audio-recorded data, the interpretation of experiments, etc.

In linguistics, we are concerned with the study of language as a complex system coined by an interplay of various disciplines. When it comes to the study of language structure which, as the above quote by Chomsky implies, is of vital importance to our understanding of the world in general and thus to any kind of human interaction, the three prime fields that come to mind are morphology, lexicology and syntax. While the former two are associated with the study of words and their internal structure, syntax is about how these words can be put together to create phrases, clauses and sentences.

In this seminar, you will delve into the fascinating worlds of each of them, and, in addition to providing you with an overview of their basic concepts and theoretical frameworks, you will gain some hands-on experience by engaging in diverse analyses yourselves and, for those pursuing a teaching degree, by learning how to implement your newly obtained knowledge in the classroom.

Not only will we talk about basic questions such as what (the difference between) a word, a phrase and a sentence is, what they consist of, what kinds of words, phrases and sentences we can distinguish or how they can be analyzed. We will also address issues like syntactic variation (and how it is, for example, reflected in rap lyrics), word formation processes (and the question of whether it was, indeed, on Facebook that the first person was ever "unfriended") and what is and is (potentially) not possible when it comes to the reordering of sentence elements.

Mindestens zwei Semester vor Ihrem Examen, aber gern auch schon zur Orientierung früher, sollten Sie an einem Kurs teilnehmen, der Sie auf die schriftliche Examensprüfung in englischer Sprachwissenschaft vorbereitet. Bei der Wahl Ihres Themengebiets haben Sie im Studiengang Lehramt an Gymnasien unter anderem die Möglichkeit, eine mittelenglische oder altenglische Textklausur zu bearbeiten. Wenn Sie sich für die Sprachgeschichte interessieren, sind Sie in diesem Vorbereitungskurs genau richtig. Um Ihre Kenntnis der englischen Sprachgeschichte und des Mittelenglischen aufzubauen und zu vertiefen, ist es vollkommen ausreichend, die Übung Englische Sprachgeschichte besucht zu haben. Weitere Vorkenntnisse sind nicht nötig. Der Schwerpunkt wird in diesem Semester erneut auf der mittelenglischen Textklausur liegen.

Hier ein paar Fakten, die Ihnen bei der Entscheidung helfen können, ob dieser Kurs vielleicht etwas für Sie wäre: Die schriftliche Examensprüfung besteht, wie bei der neuenglischen Textklausur auch, aus Fragen zu einer Textpassage und einem Aufsatzthema. Anders als bei der neuenglischen Klausur können Sie aber die Texte der mittelenglischen Klausur im Vorfeld genau vorbereiten, denn die Passagen stammen immer aus einem festgelegten Textkorpus. Dieses besteht aus einer (übersichtlichen) Auswahl aus den Werken Geoffrey Chaucers; genauer: zehn Geschichten der Canterbury Tales und die ersten beiden Bücher von Troilus and Criseyde. Chaucers Londoner Englisch des 14. Jahrhunderts ist die Grundlage des heutigen englischen Standards und bietet daher die am leichtesten verständliche mittelenglische Varietät.

In der Examensübung werden zum einen über die Übung Englische Sprachgeschichte hinausgehende theoretische Fragestellungen überblicksartig geklärt, hauptsächlich geht es aber um die praktische Bearbeitung von mittelenglischen Staatsexamensklausuren der letzten Jahre. Die erste Frage zum Text ist immer eine Übersetzung ins Deutsche, weswegen zusätzlich zu der Examensübung eine Übung in mehreren kleinen Blöcken (insgesamt eine Semesterwochenstunde) zur Übersetzung Mittelenglisch-Deutsch angeboten wird.

Studierende anderer Studiengänge mit vertieftem Interesse an der englischen Sprachgeschichte sind in diesem Kurs ebenfalls willkommen. Kursunterlagen werden auf dem "Virtuellen Campus" bereitgestellt. Das Passwort wird zu Vorlesungsbeginn bekannt gegeben.

Inhalt:

Textlinguistics is a branch of linguistics that takes the text as unit of analysis. Commonly viewed as part of the broader domain of discourse analysis, it goes beyond traditional structural levels of analysis as represented by phonology, morphology, syntax, etc. and considers texts as communicative systems.

A list of central issues addressed by textlinguistics may comprise:

• Definitions: What is a text?
• Cohesion: How do parts of texts belong together linguistically?
• Coherence: How do readers make sense of texts?
• Text typology: How can we classify texts into distinctive categories?
• Mode: In which respects are texts in different modes (esp. written vs. spoken) linguistically different from each other?
• Applied textlinguistics and interdisciplinary aspects: How can we use insights from textlinguistics in domains such as literary analysis, translation studies, intercultural communication or language education?

The seminar aims to address these guiding questions both from theoretical and practical perspectives, will discuss the status of hybrid (e.g. digital and written-to-be spoken, written-to-be-sung, etc.) texts and will consider the particular role of contextual factors. To this end, it will further touch upon neighboring areas such as stylistics and register studies and will highlight methods and approaches used in textlinguistic research.

This course is designed for students working on (smaller or larger) research projects in English Linguistics connected to the instructor's seminars, Uebungen, and beyond. This includes supervision of the theoretical and empirical parts of presentations, term papers and final theses. It gives students the opportunity to discuss their own research with the instructor in small groups or individually. The course covers analytic procedures (data collection and preparation, presentation and visualization) and formal aspects (such as style sheet and referencing), and it provides support in meeting the structural and administrative requirements of a presentation, paper or thesis. The sessions consist of tutorials in which students receive individual feedback on the structure, argument, progress and possible problems of their academic work. Why is English like that? Why is knight spelled with a kn and a gh? Why does English have so many synonyms, like start, begin, commence or clever, intelligent, astute and bright? How come that we hardly have any, in fact only eight, inflectional endings in English today? And how are German and English related, as they obviously are --- just compare, for instance, goose and Gans, house and Haus, knight and Knecht, light and Licht?
This lecture addresses all these questions, and more. Students will be given an overview of the development of the English language from its earliest attestations in the late 7th century (Old English) until today in the context of the textual transmission and sociohistorical changes. Selected passages from different periods will be introduced. Special areas of interest are the development of the vocabulary, sounds and spelling, morphology and syntax.
This lecture is particularly designed for students of BA "Anglistik/Amerikanistik", Aufbaumodul (2 ECTS). Students from other BA programmes can earn 2 or 4 ECTS points for their Studium Generale (pass/fail), and visiting students can earn 2 or 4 ungraded (pass/fail ) or graded ECTS points. Everybody else who is interested is of course welcome, too, and may attend the lecture as a guest without ECTS points.

Do you sometimes wonder whether an expression you have heard or read is actually appropriate to use in a certain context? Do you regularly rack your brains for a good way of expressing your ideas in an essay or term paper? Do people sometimes ask you to proofread their texts but you find it hard to judge their language? Are you considering a career in teaching English but feel daunted by the prospect of corrections piling up on your desk? Know-how of the right digital resources can help you with these tasks.

This practical course aims to enable participants to use corpus tools to assess their own and other writers' text production. Corpora are digital text collections representative of one or more than one regional variety, genre and text type, which can be accessed through various interfaces, many of them freely available online. Corpus skills put users in a position to check whether a certain word, collocation or syntactic structure conforms to the norms of competent language users, and they provide insights into what these norms are (in terms of registers and regional varieties). Participants will build up their competence as corpus users, developing simple and complex corpus searches and critically monitoring query results and numerical output. We will also explore ready-made corpus-based tools designed to help with (academic) writing tasks.

Inhalt:

Dieser Workshop bereitet Sie gezielt auf das Staatsexamen Linguistik synchron (LA Gymnasium) vor und sollte direkt vor dem Examen, also im gleichen Semester, belegt werden. In der ersten Sitzung erhalten Sie praktische Tipps für die schriftliche Prüfung. Zudem haben Sie die Gelegenheit, sich intensiv auf den A-Teil vorzubereiten. Zu den klassischen Prüfungsaufgaben (Transkription, Satzanalyse, morphologische Analyse) erhalten Sie individuelles Feedback bezüglich Form und Inhalt. Inhalt:

Der Workshop richtet sich an Lehramtsstudierende, die nach diesem Semester ihr Staatsexamen in Englisch ablegen wollen. Neben Strategien zur Vorbereitung und Durchführung der Übersetzungsklausur im Staatsexamen wird der Workshop Gelegenheit zur Erweiterung des prüfungsrelevanten Wortschatzes und zur vertieften Beschäftigung mit syntaktischen Fehlerschwerpunkten bieten. A limited number of places will be reserved for visiting students, students who have changed universities and students who need this class urgently as they are approaching the end of their studies. If the seminar is overbooked, the teacher will decide which students will be accepted.

3. Requirements for successful completion of the course:
4 ECTS: regular active participation in class + oral presentation with handout
5/6/8 ECTS in MA English and American Studies Consolidation Module English Linguistics I/II/III: regular active participation in class + oral presentation + oral exam
5 ECTS in other programmes or modules: regular active participation in class + oral presentation + assignment of 2500-3500 words
6 ECTS: regular active participation in class + oral presentation + seminar paper of 3000-4000 words
8 ECTS BA Anglistik/Amerikanistik Vertiefungsmodul: regular active participation in class + oral presentation + seminar paper of 3500-4500 words
8 ECTS in other programmes or modules, and visiting students: regular active participation in class + oral presentation + seminar paper of 4500-6000 words

5. Combination with "Methods and Theories in Linguistics":
In the early weeks of term, we offer an introductory block familiarizing students with linguistic research methods (the Übung "Methods and Theories in Linguistics"): https://univis.uni-bamberg.de/form?dsc=anew/lecture_view&lvs=guk/angl/engls/method&anonymous=1&founds=guk/angl/engls/method&sem=2023w&codeset=utf8. Participation in this Übung is recommended for anyone with a strong interest in Linguistics. For those BA students planning on doing their Ergänzungsmodul in Linguistics, for all students doing Lehramt Gymnasium and for all MA students, the course is obligatory at a certain point in their studies, so it is recommended to do it as early as possible. These participants are required to reserve the following times and dates: Friday, 27 October, 8-10am, Thusday, 9 November, 8-10am, Friday, 10 November, 8am-12pm. To enable pre-planning, please register for the course in FlexNow by 26 October at the latest.

Inhalt:

This course is designed to discuss linguistic topics that will also feature during the excursion to Malta, which is due to take place from November 11 to 18, 2023 (https://univis.uni-bamberg.de/form?dsc=anew/lecture_view&lvs=guk/angl/engls/exkurs&anonymous=1&founds=guk/angl/engls/exkurs&sem=2023w&codeset=utf8). In this class, we will survey previous studies on Maltese English, conduct a field study involving questionnaires as well as record and analyse spoken conversations. Participation is compulsory for students attending the excursion.
