Inhalt:

This course is concerned with central aspects of phonetics and basic phonological concepts. It will provide a description and classification of speech sounds together with a discussion of all English vowels, semi-vowels and consonants. Particular attention will be paid to the problems German learners have with English pronunciation. Students will learn to use the IPA system to transcribe English texts, including the use of strong and weak forms, lexical and syntactic stress. Core readings and texts for transcription will be made available on the Virtual Campus after each session.

Inhalt:

This course is a general introduction to concepts and methodologies in sociolinguistics, with a clear focus on the English language. We will familiarize ourselves with general sociolinguistic theory, focusing on two standard concepts: (i) linguistic variables, i.e. aspects of language that may vary systematically and can become objects of interest in sociolinguistic research, and (ii) social (including stylistic) variables that can help explain linguistic variation, for example in terms of speakers’ gender, age, socio-economic background or the contexts in which language is used. Apart from discussions of those fundamental issues, we will also look at some classic sociolinguistic studies, mainly in varieties of British and American English. The maximum credit of 6 ECTS points can be obtained by writing a termpaper about certain theoretical aspects, or by conducting a (small-scale) sociolinguistic study or experiment.

Inhalt:

This course is an introduction to the different varieties of English that are used around the globe, either as a first language (L1 varieties; e.g. England, Scotland, USA, New Zealand) or as a second language with official/institutional roles in the respective countries (L2 varieties; e.g. India, Jamaica, Nigeria, Hong Kong). The course aims to bring together the most important language-historical, theoretical and linguistic aspects relevant to the topic: (i) a discussion of the paths along which English has expanded from Great Britain to other territories; (ii) a discussion of different models and theories that address the outcomes of this expansion; and (iii) a discussion of selected present-day varieties of English and their typical linguistic features.
