- Inhalt
- The seminar will deal with selected aspects of English syntax, particularly in connection with the English verb. As the verb phrase plays a central role in the structure of any sentence, no syntactic analysis can proceed without a detailed study of it. We will analyse the structure of verb phrases and demonstrate their relevance for syntactic patterns in simple and complex sentences (e.g. finite and non-finite, concord, negation, inversion). The discussion will be based on different theoretical frameworks (Quirk et al.'s CGEL, valency theory, case grammar).
