- Description:
More than ever before in its history, the English language went through dramatic changes after the Norman Conquest in 1066; above all, new vocabulary was introduced from French in large numbers, and – compared to Old English – the grammatical structure of the language changed drastically, too. This lecture gives an overview of the English language between about 1000 and 1500 AD – that is, in the 'middle' between Old English and Modern English – before the backdrop of the sociohistorical developments in the country. By selections of text types from different centuries and various parts of the country varieties of the Middle English language are demonstrated. Characteristic phonological, morphological, lexico-semantic and syntactic features of Middle English will be explained, both synchronically and diachronically. In addition, recent methods and approaches of scholarship, such as corpus linguistics, speech act theory and text linguistics, will be discussed in their application to Middle English as a past stage of the English language.
Knowledge of Old English or Middle English is no prerequisite for attending this lecture – all students of English are welcome.
