- Inhalt
- English in Wales dates back to the 11th century AD. Due to the Norman Invasion, large numbers of English speakers arrived in Wales, initiating a step-by-step replacement of the Welsh language in all domains of public life. The increased significance of English led to a depreciation of Welsh, whose speaker numbers steadily decreased till recently. Today, English still is the dominant language in Wales, spoken by almost 100% of the population, but Welsh is regaining importance. Since 1993, it is an official language of Wales – next to English – and all Welsh children nowadays receive Welsh lessons at school. Clearly, English and Welsh interact tightly with each other, which is reflected in the phonology, morphosyntax and the lexicon of English varieties in Wales.
The aims of this seminar are:
- Gaining an overview of the history of Welsh English up to the current language situation in Wales
- Acquiring a general understanding of Welsh English in the areas of phonology, morphosyntax and the lexicon
- Discussing the linguistic variety in Wales, especially concerning the north, the south-east and the south-west of the country
- Learning about current research projects on Welsh English varieties
Note: There will be a pre-meeting on 19 April, which involves the distribution of the topics for the oral presentations.
