Bei feierlichen Anlässen wird in Schottland die Nationalhymne des Vereinigten Königreichs, "God Save the King", gesungen. Es gibt jedoch Gelegenheiten, bei denen sich beispielsweise die Sportnation Schottland mit ausländischen Nationen oder gar mit anderen Teilen Großbritanniens misst, und dabei fällt sofort auf, dass Schottland keine eigene offizielle Hymne hat. Vielmehr wird in Schottland seit vielen Jahren immer wieder heftig darüber diskutiert, was denn die schottische Nationalhymne sein könne. Einige der Kandidaten für diesen Titel werden im Vortrag vorgestellt (und vorgespielt). Ziel ist es zu zeigen, welche Aspekte der schottischen Geschichte und Kultur sich in den jeweiligen Liedtexten widerspiegeln und welche Konstruktion(en) schottischer nationaler Identität sich aus ihnen ableiten lassen.
Silvia Mergenthal studierte Anglistik und Germanistik an den Universitäten Erlangen-Nürnberg, Austin/Texas und St. Andrews/ Schottland. Sie promovierte (1989) und habilitierte (1994) in Erlangen; von 1997 bis 2022 war sie Professorin für Anglistik und Allgemeine Literaturwissenschaft an der Universität Konstanz. Zu ihren Schwerpunkten in Forschung und Lehre gehört die Literatur und Kultur Schottlands, und sie hat unter anderem zu den schottischen Autoren Robert Burns, James Hogg und Walter Scott publiziert.
Dieser Gastvortrag wird von Dr. Robert Craig (wiss. Mitarbeiter am Lehrstuhl für Britische Kultur) in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Verein 'Europa in Bamberg' organisiert.

- In 2023 the Museum Georg Schäfer in Schweinfurt will stage an exhibition titled ‘Adolph Menzel and the German Shakespeare Euphoria of the Nineteenth Century’, and it will be running from 12 August until 22 October 2023.
Taking as its starting point the widespread enthusiasm for Shakespeare in nineteenth-century Germany, this seminar is devoted to Adolph Menzel’s works on Shakespeare. Along with Caspar David Friedrich Adolph Menzel (8 December 1815 – 9 February 1905) is considered one of the two most prominent German painters of the 19th century, and was the most successful artist of his era in Germany. Menzel’s Shakespeare works range from an early arabesque frame for a German and English Shakespeare edition, through numerous sketches of theatre productions that he attended in Berlin, to a portrayal of Hamlet and Polonius, a gouache painting of the dancing Henry VIII, and various portraits of the Bard.
Menzel’s artistic engagement with William Shakespeare will also be set in the specific cultural context of the German Shakespeare euphoria of the nineteenth century. This history will be brought to life through the particular example of the Deutsche Shakespeare-Gesellschaft and the ‘Meininger’, as illustrated above all in the work of the so-called ‘Theatre Duke’, Georg II of Saxe-Meiningen. The Duke not only substantially reformed the art of acting and made a name for himself with his numerous figurines and stage designs, but he also sent his court theatre on many guest performance tours, not least to the Friedrich-Wilhelmstädtische Theater (Friedrich Wilhelm City Theatre) in Berlin, where in May 1874 a production of Julius Caesar thrilled its Berlin audience. This particular production shaped the so-called ‘Meiningen’ style of staging from that point on.
N.B.: Students attending this seminar must be fluent in German and English. We will visit various museums and archives to do genuine research in the literary and theatre archives. The excursions are compulsory to receive ECTS.

- The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, Brighton Rock, and Richard III. What do these movies have in common? They're all quite old and they all continue to enjoy substantial popularity. They will stand the test of time and will therefore be considered as film classics. In this seminar you will be introduced to British film classics which were produced between 1943 and 1966. Upon completion of this course, you will have developed a broader knowledge of these movies. You will also develop greater skills in the use of video for the purposes of teaching and presentation.

- “Must Rhodes fall?” In recent years, British cultural politics has been preoccupied – on all sides – with the question of how to come to terms with the shameful and painful legacies of colonialism and Empire. Whether in the form of debates around the contemporary appropriateness of an Oxford statue of the colonialist Cecil Rhodes, or in the direct action that saw the statue of a slave trader unceremoniously dumped in Bristol Harbor in the summer of 2020: British society is now confronting, more consciously than ever before, its long and dark historical shadow.
This seminar examines that legacy from a wide variety of perspectives, drawn from a variety of historical eras. We will start with an overview of the current British debates around the memory of Empire. After a brief theoretical excursus through Frantz Fanon’s ground-breaking Black Skin, White Masks (1952), we’ll discuss Olaudah Equiano’s Interesting Narrative of 1789: the remarkable first-hand account of a journey from slavery to freedom. We turn next to Chinua Achebe’s devastating masterpiece, Things Fall Apart (1958), an unsparing portrait of the impact of colonialism on the Igbo Tribe in nineteenth-century Nigeria. Following this, we’ll be reading selection of poems by Derek Walcott, a Saint Lucian poet and playwright whose meditations on the personal and collective legacies of colonialism culminated in the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1992. Finally, we arrive (back) in the multicultural Britain of the twenty-first century, with Bernardine Evaristo’s globally acclaimed and multi-award-winning novel, Girl, Woman, Other (2019).

Die Übung/das Kolloquium wendet sich vornehmlich an Studierende der Britischen Kultur in höheren Semestern. Es versteht sich als offenes wissenschaftliches Forum, in dem B.A.- und M.A.-Arbeiten, Magisterarbeiten, Dissertationen oder andere kulturwissenschaftlich relevante Projekte auch unter Beteiligung von Gästen zur Diskussion stehen. Zugleich bietet dieses Forum auch die Möglichkeit, eher formal orientierte Fragestellungen der Praxis zu diskutieren (z. B. Präsentationsformen bei Vorträgen/Referaten, Redaktion von Texten).
Zudem werden berufsorientierte Veranstaltungen durchgeführt, die den Studierenden Einblick in verschiedene Berufsmöglichkeiten geben sollen.
Inhalte für Vertiefungsmodul: ein Spezialgebiet. In diesem Modul werden die Kenntnisse einer weiteren Epoche bzw. einer weiteren kulturwissenschaftlichen Fragestellung vermittelt, die mit eigener regelmäßiger Lektüre begleitet wird. Zudem werden berufsrelevante Schlüsselqualifikationen (z.B. Präsentations- und Kommunikationstechniken) ausdifferenziert und vertieft. Mündliche und schriftliche Präsentation eigener Ergebnisse wird eingeübt.
The colloquium is intended primarily for advanced students of British culture. It is to be understood as an open academic forum in which B.A. and M.A. essays, Magister and other dissertations, or other projects in the realm of cultural studies, can be discussed in the presence of participating guests. At the same time, this forum offers the opportunity to discuss more formal questions of academic practice (e.g. presentational methods for lectures and presentations, composition of texts).
In addition, sessions will be organized with a more vocational orientation, intended to give the students insight into various professional possibilities.
Contents ("Vertiefungsmodul"): An area of expert knowledge. This module allows students to acquire knowledge of an additional period and of an additional cultural studies problem, all accompanied by appropriate regular reading. Furthermore, certain key professional skills (e.g. presentational and communicational techniques) will be refined and deepened. There will be practice in the spoken and written presentation of the students’ research results.

Qualifikationsziele "Vertiefungsmodul": Die Studierenden vertiefen ihre Kenntnisse der englischsprachigen Kulturen sowie der Kulturtheorien. Academic outcomes "Vertiefungsmodul": Students deepen their acquaintance with the culture of English speaking countries and also of cultural theory. Each student acquires an area of expert knowledge, takes on board – in a critical spirit – contemporary tendencies in research, while learning to maintain an appropriate academic register and to apply it to complex discipline-specific problems.

- Das Seminar führt in zentrale methodische Fragestellungen, Grundbegriffe, theoretische Modelle und historische Zusammenhänge des Faches Britische und Amerikanische Kulturwissenschaft ein. Der Kurs findet sowohl in englischer als auch deutscher Sprache statt, um die Studierenden mit beiden Wissenschaftssprachen vertraut zu machen.
The seminar is an introduction to the essential methodological problems, principles, theoretical models, and historical contexts indispensable for the academic pursuit of British and American cultural studies. The course is conducted in both English and German, in order to familiarize the students with the specialized academic use of both languages.
Lernergebnisse, Kompetenzen/Learning outcomes, Skills:
Grundthemen und Fragestellungen der Kulturwissenschaften konsequent mit literarischen Texten und Lektüren zu verbinden, ihre inhaltlichen Zusammenhänge zu erkennen, systematisch zu rekonstruieren sowie diese kritisch in Wort und Schrift zu analysieren. Es wird ein erster Überblick in kulturwissenschaftliche Analysemodelle und Fachterminologie gewonnen. Ferner werden grundlegende Kompetenzen sowohl formaler als auch zielsprachlicher Art vermittelt. Die kommunikativen und sozialen Kompetenzen der Studierenden werden durch interaktive und projektbezogene Gruppenarbeit gefordert und gefördert.
To relate in a logical fashion the central themes and problems of cultural studies with literary texts, and also to recognize, reconstruct, express and analyse in spoken and written form their mutual relevance. In the first instance the analytical models and special terminology of cultural studies will be established. Thereafter basic skills of both a formal and linguistic nature will be developed. Students' ability to communicate and interact in an academic setting will be both required and promoted by interactive group projects.

- Das Seminar führt in zentrale methodische Fragestellungen, Grundbegriffe, theoretische Modelle und historische Zusammenhänge des Faches Britische und Amerikanische Kulturwissenschaft ein. Der Kurs findet sowohl in englischer als auch deutscher Sprache statt, um die Studierenden mit beiden Wissenschaftssprachen vertraut zu machen.
The seminar is an introduction to the essential methodological problems, principles, theoretical models, and historical contexts indispensable for the academic pursuit of British and American cultural studies. The course is conducted in both English and German, in order to familiarize the students with the specialized academic use of both languages.
Lernergebnisse, Kompetenzen/Learning outcomes, Skills:
Grundthemen und Fragestellungen der Kulturwissenschaften konsequent mit literarischen Texten und Lektüren zu verbinden, ihre inhaltlichen Zusammenhänge zu erkennen, systematisch zu rekonstruieren sowie diese kritisch in Wort und Schrift zu analysieren. Es wird ein erster Überblick in kulturwissenschaftliche Analysemodelle und Fachterminologie gewonnen. Ferner werden grundlegende Kompetenzen sowohl formaler als auch zielsprachlicher Art vermittelt. Die kommunikativen und sozialen Kompetenzen der Studierenden werden durch interaktive und projektbezogene Gruppenarbeit gefordert und gefördert.
To relate in a logical fashion the central themes and problems of cultural studies with literary texts, and also to recognize, reconstruct, express and analyse in spoken and written form their mutual relevance. In the first instance the analytical models and special terminology of cultural studies will be established. Thereafter basic skills of both a formal and linguistic nature will be developed. Students' ability to communicate and interact in an academic setting will be both required and promoted by interactive group projects.

- “Commerce is our goal here at Tyrell. ‘More human than human’ is our motto.” Eldon Tyrell’s boast about the near indistinguishability from humans of his corporation’s latest line of ‘replicants’ sits at the heart of Blade Runner, the British director Ridley Scott’s iconic science fiction film of 1982. It’s a darkly ironic claim. Replicants are a bio-technological upgrade on their human creators: a truly posthuman form of being. But as Tyrell unwittingly reminds us, their post-humanity both embodies capitalism’s de-humanizing drive for ever-greater efficiency and productivity and reminds us of the very humanness we may have abandoned in the process.
In this seminar we will examine the contested concepts of ‘the post-human’ and ‘the trans-human’ through the lens of science fiction. In particular, we’ll be asking how these categories invite us to reconsider both ‘humanness’ and ‘the human’ itself. After laying our theoretical groundwork with the help of Stefan Herbrechter and Rosi Braidotti, we’ll turn to examine four science fiction classics. We begin with Arthur C. Clarke’s Childhood’s End (1953), the tale of a benevolent alien invasion with unintended consequences. Both Philip K. Dick’s Androids (1968) and Ridley Scott’s famous film adaptation ask what it is that makes us human, anyway; and Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go (2005) extends the question into the murky realm of human cloning. Finally, Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake (2003) fast-forwards us to a future in which humanity itself is battling the existential consequences of its own technological advance.
