The relish with which twentieth- and twenty-first century British novelists, playwrights, poets, and film-makers have dwelt on their own nation’s declining fortunes, amounting almost to an obsession, is a phenomenon with few historical parallels. Taking as their focus the fate of particular families, social groups and institutions, these artists have gone to work in a spirit of intense nostalgia, bitter regret, angry recrimination and gleeful Schadenfreude (sometimes all four in the same work), but always with the conviction that only their very best efforts would suffice to deal with a topic of this magnitude. Works to be considered are: novels George Orwell’s Coming up for Air, Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited and Angus Wilson’s No Laughing Matter; plays Noel Coward’s Cavalcade, John Osborne’s The Entertainer and Alan Bennett’s Forty Years On; selected poems by John Betjeman and Philip Larkin; films Powell and Pressburger’s The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp and Shane Meadows’ This Is England. The three novels should be read before the relevant seminar, preferably before the beginning of the semester, as should The Entertainer.
Lernergebnisse, Kompetenzen/Learning outcomes, Skills
Students will gain insight into a particular trend in British culture, one which has made itself felt in a broad range of artistic media. They will learn to see this trend in the context of historical developments, and at the same time will come to appreciate that it is a historical force in its own right. Lastly, by confronting texts and films which are well-known within the UK, but perhaps less well known abroad, they will gain an ‘insider’s’ feel for how the British see themselves, as opposed to how others see them.
