Great Britain was for much of the twentieth century a law-abiding country, a country in which the police did not carry fire-arms and where few citizens would ever have direct experience of violent crime. As a reaction, perhaps, British interest in violent crime, above all in murder, has remained very lively. Murder investigations and murder trials have obsessed the national press for years at a time; they have given rise to factual but none the less literary analysis by writers of distinction; they have provided motifs for fictional treatments of murder, or key background elements for stories less directly concerned with the crimes themselves. Above all, they have furnished material for a remarkable series of films, from Ten Rillington Place, to Dance with a Stranger, to Pierrepoint. This course will examine more than a century of real-life crimes and take them as the starting-point for an appreciation of the various literary treatments, novels, televisual and cinema productions inspired by them. For example: the ‘Jack the Ripper’ murders of 1888 will lead into an analysis of Marie Belloc Lowndes’ The Lodger and Alfred Hitchcock’s film of the same name. In this way, light will be brought to bear on the dark excesses of British behaviour, and on the equally dark recesses of the mentality of a nation obviously fascinated by what it claims most to abhor.
