Inhalt
The course gives a chronological survey of English literature from the Anglo-Saxon period through the 15th century. Its literature will be considered from various perspectives, but with constant attention to its historical and cultural contexts in this formative period of the English nation. Beginning with a short exploration of Celtic Britain, we will outline the principal Anglo-Saxon society, their kings and their achievements as well as the lasting effects of the Vikings in England and the Norman conquest in the eleventh century up to end of the 15th century. The course will focus upon some of the best known medieval genres (i.e. Old English battle poetry, elegies and riddles; Middle English fabliaux, romances, animal tales, lyrics) and discuss the most famous texts from the medieval period in their historical and cultural context (Beowulf, Gawain and the Green Knight, William Langland, Geoffrey Chaucer). We will also examine some manuscripts and facsimiles in order to gain appreciation for early medieval book technology and the problems of editing medieval texts. The course will be taught as lecture and discussion. Requirements for 4 ECTS points include regular participation in class discussion and an oral exam on a topic of the student’s choice. Guest lectures by colleagues from outside Bamberg will provide some important additional points of view as well as an extension of the methodological approach.
