Inhalt
Inhalte/Contents
Travel writing is an old and popular genre, and despite mass tourism, as a consequence of which even far-away places have become more or less easily accessible, it is still very much alive and has made its way into new media such as television. However, it is only in recent decades that it has attracted serious academic attention. This seminar will provide an overview of the genre and an introduction to the changing purposes and perceptions of travelling that it reflects.
We will start with Laurence Sterne s Sentimental Journey through France and Italy by Mr. Yorick (1768). For centuries young Englishmen visited the continent mainly those two countries to immerse themselves in classical culture, learn foreign languages and often also to prepare themselves for future political office. Such Grand Tours spawned innumerable travelogues. Sterne s famous book is indebted to this tradition, but as its title suggests the Sentimental Journey is much more interested in the feelings and amorous adventures of the traveller, Reverend Yorick.
Britons, however, did not only venture abroad. By the middle of the 18th century, the Home Tour had established itself. We will be discussing Samuel Johnson s informative account of A Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland (1775), on which he was accompanied by his friend Boswell. Johnson focuses on the people he meets, who frequently strike him as rather exotic, even wild. With Charles Darwin s account of the Voyage of the Beagle (1839) we will leave behind the confines of Europe and travel all around the world. Darwin s text, which we will be reading in an abridged edition, contains vivid descriptions of what for most Europeans of the time were fascinatingly remote places, but it is also an account of his scientific research research that would eventually lead him to formulate his theory of evolution. We will also be discussing the BBC mini-series The Voyage of Charles Darwin (1978). An introduction to film and TV analysis will be provided.
One of the best-known British travelogues of the 20th century is Wilfred Thesiger s Arabian Sands. Between 1945 and 1950 the author-adventurer became one of the first Europeans to visit the Bedouins of the so-called Empty Quarter in the south-east of the Arabian peninsula. He documented their traditional way of life shortly before it changed forever as a consequence of the influx of modern civilization. In Thesiger s own words, Arabian Sands is a tribute to a once magnificent people.
Finally, we will be analysing yet another successful BBC series: Around the World in 80 Days (1989). In it Monty Python star Michael Palin follows the example of Jules Verne s Phileas Fogg and travels round a now fully mapped globe, introducing his audience to many different cultures along the way. A postmodern travel experience.

Lernergebnisse, Kompetenzen/Learning outcomes, Skills
Text competence in the target language, written and oral presentations which demonstrate the ability to build up an academic argument and use appropriate academic language. Students should be in the position to consider questions and problems related to literary studies in their contexts, to reconstruct them in a systematic way, position them critically and to present them in both oral and written forms. By the end of the course, students will have broadened their knowledge of some important texts in English literature, and in addition, have a deeper under-standing of film and television analysis.
