- Inhalt:
- Apocalypticism, eschatology, millennialism, and chiliasm are terms to describe aspects of the belief in an imminent cataclysmic event or epochal transformation that will lead to the end of the world as we know it and to the coming of a new age. The “study of the last things” forms an important strain of the Judeo-Christian tradition as well as of other religious communities, but has also related secular equivalents. Apart from looking into several manifestations of this phenomenon from the early modern period to the present (literature, newspapers, art, film etc.), this cultural studies seminar will evaluate a variety of theories applied to interpret the persistence of apocalyptic ideas.

- Inhalt:
- When rioting broke out in London, Birmingham, Manchester, and other English cities in August 2011, several commentators pointed to a “tradition” of riots, rebellions and revolts which was frequently overlooked in official historical accounts but had influenced British culture. Following a chronological trajectory, this Proseminar sets out to understand radical oppositional movements as well as eruptions of gratuitous violence from the early modern period to the present in their respective religious, political, and cultural contexts. In order to estimate the cultural impact of these turbulences, we will not only look at the historical data, but also study literary and artistic expressions dealing with civil disobedience. Riots and rebellions studied include: The Prayer Book Rebellion (1549), The English Civil War (1642–1651), the outcry against the Jewish Naturalization Bill of 1753, the Gordon Riots (1780), the Peterloo Massacre (1819), the Suffragettes’ Rebellions (e.g. 1903), The Brixton Riot (1981), and the 2011 England Riots.

- Inhalt:
- This lecture surveys the literature and culture of the Jewish community in America from colonial times to the present. After critically examining the terms Jewish, Jewish literature and Jewish culture, the lecture provides a historical overview of the major phases of Jewish immigration to America. We will then study landmarks of Jewish-American literature in their respective cultural contexts. A particular focus will be on novels and short stories that deal with characteristic Jewish experiences of the last 120 years. Whether they concentrate on the problems of adapting to new physical, social and cultural surroundings in the wake of immigration, lament the disintegration of familial and religious securities, or reflect upon the horrors of persecution and annihilation, most of these works negotiate the meaning of Jewish identity in modern times. Further social and cultural issues addressed in the lecture include the branches of Judaism in America, Jewish politics and organizations, music and arts, the media and popular culture, anti-Semitism, the Holocaust, and Israel.
