Inhalt:

This course offers an introduction to key themes and methods in American cultural studies as an interdisciplinary field of inquiry. Thematically, we will explore issues such as religion and immigration, the frontier and regionalism, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, the media and technology, America as nature’s nation and America and the world; conceptually, the focus will be on equality and difference as utopian ideas that have shaped American culture from colonial times to the present.

The course is designed to provide you with basic skills in American cultural studies, with a strong emphasis on reading and discussing various kinds of texts in their cultural contexts. Our primary materials will include short stories, poems and excerpts from novels as well as historical documents, essays, political speeches, photographs, popular songs and films, while several theoretical essays will provide us with a language for discussing changing concepts of culture.

Inhalt:

Doppelgänger (also spelled doppelganger) is one of those German expressions that have become established in English. The Oxford English Dictionary defines the term as the “apparition of a living person; a double, a wraith.” The literary and psychological concept is now frequently understood as a device to highlight questions of identity, self and other. Apart from studying the theoretical ramifications of the doppelgänger, the seminar will look at concrete examples of doubles in fiction, film and art.

Inhalt:

A modern dreamland, former convict settlement, faraway realm of the British Empire at the end of the world, a modern democracy, mythical homecountry and cultural centre to the indigenous Aboriginals – Australia is known in many guises and still many features of the “land down under” remain strikingly unfamiliar.

This seminar intends to shed light on some of Australia’s literature and culture always bearing in mind its status as a settler colony. During the first part of the semester cultural aspects like the early history of the colonies of Australia, the independence of the Commonwealth of Australia, its current position in the world, etc. shall be discussed, whereas the second part of the semester will focus on important literary texts from “Down Under” ranging from early colonial to truly postcolonial works, written by both indigenous or (Australian-born) white authors, who include Kate Grenville, Andrew McGahan, Sally Morgan and Patrick White.

Inhalt:

The city is an important issue in American Cultural Studies and has been analyzed from a variety of angles. This Proseminar sets out from the insight that, owing to their complexity and multifariousness, cities can never be entirely understood. By following different approaches, however, we may be able to get closer to what the city can mean to different people. The class will start with a historical overview of the physical and social development of American cities and then turn to cultural assumptions about urban life in the colonial period. The main part of the term will be devoted to perceptions of the city in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The class will read fictional and non-fictional texts engaged with the city, but also look at architecture, painting, and movies. In order to get a good terminological and conceptual grasp of this material, we will also study theoretical writing about urban life and its culture.

Inhalt:

The time around 1800 was a critical period for the development of the social, political, and cultural landscape of Great Britain. Apart from the technical, economic, and social changes wrought by the Industrial Revolution, it was the overthrow of the political system across the Channel that triggered a heated discussion about the constitutional institutions, the legal system, the hierarchical order, the role of women, and the religious establishment in Britain. In the course of the “French Revolution Debate” ideological camps formed up, often referred to as the Jacobins and the anti-Jacobins or the conservatives and the radicals. At the same time, a new literary movement emerged – now referred to as Romanticism – that sometimes engaged with the social and political realities and sometimes tried to avoid them by retreating into the realm of the imagination. In order to deepen an understanding of the historical and cultural processes of the time, the lecture analyses key texts ranging from the theoretical pamphlet to the religious tract and from the poem to the novel.
