This course offers an introduction to key themes and methods in American cultural studies as an interdisciplinary field of inquiry. Thematically, we will explore issues such as religion and immigration, the frontier and regionalism, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, the media and technology, America as nature s nation and America and the world; conceptually, the focus will be on equality and difference as utopian ideas that have shaped American culture from colonial times to the present.

The course is designed to provide you with basic skills in American cultural studies, with a strong emphasis on reading and discussing various kinds of texts in their cultural contexts. Our primary materials will include short stories, poems and excerpts from novels as well as historical documents, essays, political speeches, photographs, popular songs and films, while several theoretical essays will provide us with a language for discussing changing concepts of culture.

Inhalt:

150 years ago, on July 14, 1865, the 25-year-old Englishman Edward Whymper and his companions first reached the summit of the Matterhorn. This event, though tragic in its further course, marked the climax of “the golden age of alpinism”. It was only one of many first ascents by British alpinists in the nineteenth century. Why were the British so extraordinarily attracted to that high mountain range on the continent? This advanced Cultural Studies seminar traces the development of the changing attitudes the British felt towards the Alps. Still in the early eighteenth century, these mountains were but generally abhorred as gruesome and ugly. At the time of the Enlightenment, however, people increasingly appreciated the grandeur of the scenery and the simplicity of life there. The English Romantic poet William Wordsworth not only went on an extensive walking tour of the Alps but also discovered parallels between the Swiss and the English. Lord Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley were overwhelmed by the sublime immensity of the mountains. In the Victorian era more and more British scientists, e.g. James David Forbes and John Ball, were drawn to the Alps. At the same time, mountain climbing was progressively regarded as adventure and pleasure. That the English were at the forefront of that movement can be illustrated by the foundation of the UK Alpine Club in 1857, the first Alpine club worldwide. Many of the most prominent writers and intellectuals of the time, Matthew Arnold, John Ruskin and Leslie Stephen among them, contributed to its remarkable influence. While at this time, mountaineering was largely regarded as the prerogative of a social and cultural elite, the last decades of the nineteenth century also saw the beginning of mass tourism in the Alps, mainly promoted by Thomas Cook. Soon the British also propelled the triumph of winter sports like tobogganing and skiing. The seminar will not just survey these developments but look at the way aspects of identity as well as general tendencies of the times are associated with them. Issues related to the British love of the Alps include: aesthetic theory, literature and the arts, gender, class, nationalism, colonialism, science and technology.

Inhalt:

The prime target of this class is to explore the cultural history of Scotland, utilising relevant pieces of Scottish literature which offer their own literary-historiographical perspective towards historical events taking place in the Scottish Highlands and Lowlands during the 18th and 19th centuries. To this end, we will e. g. be looking into excerpts of novels such as Sir Walter Scott s Rob Roy (1817), James Hogg s Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner (1824) and Neil Miller Gunn s Butcher s Broom (1934) as well as Sorley MacLean s famous Clearances poem Hallaig (1954). These works circle around fundamental Scottish topics such as Jacobitism, the Highland Clearances, the Improvements, Highlandism and the controversial role of Calvinism. Consequently, we will be dealing with these phenomena in more depth in this class.

While American Cultural Studies has always paid tribute to the importance of religion in the US, the question of religion has often been a blind spot in British Cultural Studies. In recent years, however, the discipline has increasingly acknowledged that religion has been a central part of people’s identities in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. This lecture provides a survey of the major tendencies and events of the religious history of Britain from the Early Modern Period to the present. Rather than dwelling on Biblical and theological issues, the lecture will show the relevance of important disputes for the formation of allegiances, solidarity and hostility.
