Inhalt:

The term “moral panics” was popularised by the British sociologist Stanley Cohen, who elaborated on the concept in his book on 1960s youth cultures Folk Devils and Moral Panics (1972). According to Cohen, societies intermittently go through phases of severe anxiety over the stability of the social order and the persistence of values and norms. These bouts frequently follow a distinct trajectory: a latent fear of a new phenomenon is stoked by the media to such a degree that the authorities feel induced to react. After some time, the general interest abates and the panic dissipates.

“Moral panic” has proved to be a very productive concept in sociology, cultural studies, media studies and related disciplines. In addition to that, it is often invoked in public discussions of deviance, crime and the role of the media in influencing the masses. In recent years, however, the validity of this interpretative tool has been called into question (e.g. by Bill Thompson and Andy Williams in The Myth of Moral Panics, 2014).

Apart from examining the theoretical debate over the concept and its ramifications, the seminar will study concrete instances of (alleged) moral panics in Britain and the US, e.g. over the moral degeneracy of the youth, sexual deviancy, mass murderers, computer games, satanic rituals and police brutality. While most of our attention will be devoted to the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, we will also look back at a couple of older historical examples.

Inhalt:

Most students of American history and culture are aware of the significance that some narratives of the Hebrew Bible / the Old Testament had for seventeenth-century Puritan settlers in New England. The story of Exodus, the idea of America as a Promised Land and its inhabitants as a chosen nation were indeed central to early colonial America. What is less known is that the Hebrew Bible continued to exert a profound influence on the collective imagination and the political culture of the New World well into the second half of the nineteenth century. Recent scholarship has shown to what extent American clergymen, political thinkers and, indeed, the general public conceptualized their identity in relation to the ancient Israelites. After Eric Nelson (e.g. The Hebrew Republic, 2010) had drawn attention to the importance of Hebrew sources for early-modern philosophical and political ideas in Europe, Eran Shalev (e.g. American Zion, 2013) examined the American predilection for the Old Testament between the Revolution and the Civil War. The seminar will profit from Shalev’s insights in its pursuit to understand the role of “Hebraism” in America, but it will also look at some uses of the Hebrew Bible in the twentieth century, for instance in the Civil Rights Movement or in Christian Zionism. While most of the authors we study were Christians, we will also look at some Jewish interpretations of America in biblical terms. Mordecai Manuel Noah’s attempt to found a biblical republic in upstate New York will serve as a fascinating, albeit quixotic, example. Remarkably, some deists and religious skeptics, Thomas Jefferson and Thomas Paine among them, also occasionally relied upon Scripture to present their political ideas.

Inhalt:

This course offers an introduction to key themes and methods in American cultural studies as an interdisciplinary field of inquiry. Thematically, we will explore issues such as religion and immigration, the frontier and regionalism, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, the media and technology, America as nature s nation and America and the world; conceptually, the focus will be on equality and difference as utopian ideas that have shaped American culture from colonial times to the present.

The course is designed to provide you with basic skills in American cultural studies, with a strong emphasis on reading and discussing various kinds of texts in their cultural contexts. Our primary materials will include short stories, poems and excerpts from novels as well as historical documents, essays, political speeches, photographs, popular songs and films, while several theoretical essays will provide us with a language for discussing changing concepts of culture.

Inhalt:

Das Leben des schwarzen Bürgerrechtlers Malcolm X, der zu den Anführern der US-amerikanischen Bürgerrechtsbewegung gehörte, ist schon mehrfach verfilmt worden: Malcolm X trat nach einer Gangsterkarriere in den 1940er Jahren der Organisation Nation of Islam (NOI) bei und wurde zu einem ihrer wichtigsten Wortführer; später kam es zum Bruch mit dem NOI-Anführer Elijah Muhammad, und Malcolm X trat zum sunnitischen Islam über. Seine Ermordung im Februar 1965 durch NOI-Mitglieder ist bis heute nicht vollständig aufgeklärt und weiter Gegenstand öffentlicher Diskussionen. Warum trat Malcolm X der NOI bei, und was bewog ihn, sie wieder zu verlassen? Wie ist die NOI entstanden, durch welche Ideologie zeichnet sie sich aus, und was hat diese Ideologie mit dem Islam zu tun? Welchen Einfluss hatte die Konversion von Malcolm X zum sunnitischen Islam auf die anderen afroamerikanischen Muslime? Die Biographie von Malcolm X dient in diesem Seminar als Ausgangspunktspunkt für eine allgemeine Erkundung des afro-amerikanischen Islams und seines Schwankens zwischen Black Supremacy, Eintreten für soziale Gerechtigkeit und Sunnitisierung.

Hausarbeiten können in dieser Lehrveranstaltung auch in Form von Wikipedia-Artikeln erbracht werden.

Inhalt:

This course will be offered online. The seminar introduces selected poets and themes from the Victorian Age (1837-1901). Close readings of the texts will be seen against the historical and cultural context of the times. Amongst others, we will examine and discuss the works of Alfred Lord Tennyson, A.C. Swinburne, G.M. Hopkins, Christina Rossetti, Matthew Arnold, Thomas Hardy, E.B. Browning and Emily Brontë. The poetry is examined thematically within the contexts of imperialism, ecology, politics, science and industry, religion, family, social reform and the role of women.

There are two introductions to Victorian literature which students should study before the start of the semester. These will be made available on the "Virtual Campus".

Texts: An online script of the poems will be available for weekly reading assignments, otherwise any good anthology of Victorian poetry will be useful for more extensive reading, e.g. Valentine Cunnigham & Duncan Wu (eds), Victorian Poetry (Blackwell, 2002) or Francis O’Gorman (ed.). What is it like to grow up in America? In this seminar, we will explore topics such as American youth culture, childhood traditions, and the educational system. We will read and discuss autobiographical texts from different generations and analyze the extent to which childhood and adolescence differ, especially in terms of race, gender, and social background.

During the so-termed “memory boom” of the late twentieth century the then emerging multidisciplinary field of memory studies was mainly concerned with the representation and remembrance of past events. Archives, museums, and memorials as sites of collective memory, as well as personal, particularly traumatic, memories were the most prevalent areas of interest. In recent years, a shift of emphasis onto new aspects, conceptualisations, and forms of remembering and an increasing focus on the role of memory for our collective and individual futures can be observed within the field. Twenty-first century developments like digitalisation, advances in neuroscience, our aging Western societies, and the various crises of our time have effected fundamental changes in the way remembering and forgetting are practiced and thought about. In particular, forgetting, “the default mode of humans and societies” (A. Assmann), has been reassessed as an essential part of both collective and personal memory. From sociology to neuroscience, research on different forms, processes, and effects of forgetting is conducted with a specific focus on the potential of directed forgetting to help societies as well as individuals overcome conflicts and to promote peace and prosperity in the future.

The first part of this course provides a brief introduction to memory studies. By discussing key theoretical texts, we will identify the main concepts, concerns, and controversies with a particular focus on the most recent developments within the field. In the second part, we will focus on the implications of twenty-first century technological and scientific advancements, as well as other changes and crises of our age on collective and individual practices of remembering and forgetting. As part of these discussions on e.g. the role of the internet as an archive, we will devote much time to the study of representations of remembering and forgetting in examples of contemporary literature, film, art, and popular culture in general. Please purchase or borrow a copy of Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Buried Giant (2015); all other course readings/ materials will be provided to you on the VC.

Inhalt:

In this online seminar, we will be looking into the characteristics of British newspaper texts published by, among others, the Daily Express, Daily Mail, and Daily Mirror. In so doing, we are going to consider and compare the application of tabloid-journalistic tools such as sensationalism and extreme dramatisation of news. All of this will be done against the background of the news coverage of four major historic events: the General Strike (1926), the Good Friday Agreement (1998), Britain’s involvement in the Iraq War (2003), and the Brexit referendum (2016). The concept of the Culture Industry as developed by Adorno and Horkheimer (1947) will be utilised as a theoretical starting point. In order to obtain access to the seminar texts, you will have to create a VPN connection on your computer.

Inhalt:

Doppelgänger (also spelled doppelganger) is one of those German expressions that have become established in English. The Oxford English Dictionary defines the term as the “apparition of a living person; a double, a wraith.” The literary and psychological concept is now frequently understood as a device to highlight questions of identity, self and other. Apart from studying the theoretical ramifications of the doppelgänger, the seminar will look at concrete examples of doubles in fiction, film and art.

This course provides an overview of important approaches in the theory of culture. We will study key texts that have influenced the discipline of Cultural Studies in the Anglo-American world and beyond. Rather than being based on a lecture-style instruction, this class should be understood as a forum to discuss students’ positions toward the texts. A thorough preparation of the respective material is therefore imperative.
