Inhalt:

Apocalypticism, eschatology, millennialism, and chiliasm are terms to describe aspects of the belief in an imminent cataclysmic event or epochal transformation that will lead to the end of the world as we know it and to the coming of a new age. The “study of the last things” forms an important strain of the Judeo-Christian tradition as well as of other religious communities, but has also related secular equivalents. Apart from looking into several manifestations of this phenomenon from the colonial period to the present (literature, newspapers, art, film etc.), this cultural studies seminar will evaluate a variety of theories applied to interpret the persistence of apocalyptic ideas.

Inhalt:

Scholars agree that today’s ideas about tourism and our infatuation with picturesque and exotic places have developed over a long time. In many respects, the British set the tone for the evolution of travelling practices. Even in the Elizabethan period, some Englishmen promoted journeys to the continent to enrich the mind and gain knowledge. The aristocratic Grand Tour, which became fashionable in the eighteenth century, provided important reasons for visiting foreign countries, in this case, mainly Italy and France. As the leading industrialised nation, Britain allowed more and more of its subjects to spend money on travelling for the pursuit of adventure and pleasure. In the nineteenth century, British mountaineers first ascended many of the highest peaks in the Alps. Thomas Cook, the “father of modern tourism”, opened up the possibility of going abroad to further segments of society. What started as a religiously motivated project by the former Baptist preacher Cook, turned into an enormous business venture in the mid- and late-Victorian period. But the era of mass tourism only really gained momentum after WWII. British charter companies were among the first to provide affordable air travel for most of the population. Now, tourism has become the world’s largest single industry.

This seminar traces the history of British travel culture over the centuries. At the same time, it provides important theoretical and analytical concepts for comprehending and describing the experience of travelling as well as the practice of travel writing.

This course offers an introduction to key themes and methods in American cultural studies as an interdisciplinary field of inquiry. Thematically, we will explore issues such as religion and immigration, the frontier and regionalism, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, the media and technology, America as nature s nation and America and the world; conceptually, the focus will be on equality and difference as utopian ideas that have shaped American culture from colonial times to the present.

The course is designed to provide you with basic skills in American cultural studies, with a strong emphasis on reading and discussing various kinds of texts in their cultural contexts. Our primary materials will include short stories, poems and excerpts from novels as well as historical documents, essays, political speeches, photographs, popular songs and films, while several theoretical essays will provide us with a language for discussing changing concepts of culture.

Inhalt:

In this seminar, we will familiarise ourselves with important Scottish poems and novels, all of which can be described as being part of the Scottish literary canon. At first, we will discuss the narrative poem “Tam o’ Shanter” (1791) by Robert Burns in terms of its effect of popularising Scottish folk tales. Further, lyrical works by Hugh MacDiarmid and Sorley MacLean will be looked into: While MacDiarmid uses synthetic Scots in his “Eemis Stan” (1925), MacLean composed the original version of “Hallaig” (1954) in Gaelic. The cultural-linguistic implications of poems like these will be of special interest to our class.

Apart from lyrical works, novels will be in the focus of this seminar. James Hogg’s Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner (1824) revolves around the controversial role Calvinism played in Scottish society and history. Robert Louis Stevenson’s Kidnapped (1886) deals with another painful chapter of Scottish history: the Jacobite rising of 1745. Finally, Janice Galloway’s The Trick Is to Keep Breathing (1989) will be analysed in depth – a novel which focusses on postmodern themes such as depression, trauma, and alienation.

If you would like to take part in this class, please read two out of the three novels before the seminar starts.

Inhalt:

This year marks the 100^th anniversary of the publication of T.S. Eliot s The Waste Land, seen as one of the most important poems of the 20th century and a central work of modernist poetry. This seminar will look specifically at the poem in its historical and cultural context (The Waste Land was unmistakably influenced by the upheaval of World War I (1914 18)), as well as against the literary background of the time, including Ezra Pound who heavily influenced the poem s final form. We will also discuss selected poems from Eliot s collection Prufrock and Other Observations (1917) by way of introduction.

Inhalt:

The Kennedy Family has long been prominent in American politics, public service, entertainment and business. Only 35 years after their immigration from Ireland, the first member of the Kennedy family held a political office. This seminar will focus primarily on the time period of the 1950s and 1960s, the high years of the Kennedy family, when John F. Kennedy served as 35th president of the United States from 1961 - 1963 and his brother Robert run for the presidency in 1968. We will however also cover topics such as Irish immigration, Catholicism, politics in the 1950s and 1960s, Conspiracy Theories, Popular culture, and the role of the Kennedy family today.

There will be an online introduction to the course in which we will discuss the program, presentation topics, etc.

Inhalt:

While it is a truism that British society is organised along strict class lines, the meaning of the word class is far from evident. In contrast to some sociologists who try to pin down the phenomenon to economics only, scholars of culture should acknowledge that it has a multiplicity of facets. After discussing theoretical approaches to class and different ways the stratification of society has been conceptualized, the lecture course looks at the historical development of social diversification from the early modern period onwards. The course also turns to the cultural determinants and manifestations of class, from ancestry to education, from language to manners, from clothing to patterns of recreation. We will furthermore examine intersections between class on the one hand and place, gender, ethnicity and religion on the other. In a final step, the situation in Britain will be compared to the USA, a country that is sometimes overhastily described as a classless – albeit unequal – society.
