- Inhalt:
- This course is the first instalment of a new transdisciplinary series of yearly online lectures offered jointly by the partner universities of the European Joint Master's Programme in English and American Studies. The first edition of Spanning regions and disciplines: lecture series of the European Joint Master's Programme in English and American Studies will deal with the topic of diversity from linguistic, cultural and literary perspectives and is available not only to MA students of both study tracks but also to students of Lehramt Realschule (as part of their Zusatzmodul Literaturwissenschaft) or Lehramt Gymnasium (as part of their Vertiefungsmodul Sprachwissenschaft oder Literaturwissenschaft) and BA students (Studium Generale).
The lecture series is an outstanding opportunity to interact with a group of international students and to get to know professors from our partner universities. The course will consist of four online lectures taught between November 2023 and February 2024 (via Zoom; students will receive access info via the VC) and a hybrid student conference on Thursday, 25 April 2024.

- While Britain and the United States have contributed greatly to the promotion of liberal ideals like justice, tolerance, and equality, one should not ignore the ugly underbelly of narrow-mindedness, prejudice, and bigotry that has also existed. That anti-Semitism has proved to be one of the most enduring and baneful forms of hostility can partly be attributed to its ability to transform – “like a virus, it mutates,” as Jonathan Sacks, the former Orthodox Chief Rabbi of the UK, put it in a speech in the House of Commons in 2018.
This advanced seminar in cultural studies will look at many of the mutations of the disease from the Middle Ages until today. Christian anti-Judaism did not only decry the Jewish religion as callous and legalistic but accused its followers of blindness, stubbornness, and clannishness. Ultimately, Jews were blamed for the death of Christ. Racial forms of anti-Semitism, which developed in the course of the nineteenth century, elaborated on these ancient prejudices, hallucinating about unsavory Jewish character traits, filthy bodies, and licentious practices. The irrational character of anti-Jewish racism is nowhere better illustrated than in the grand conspiracies Jews were suspected of scheming. Drawing upon a plethora of texts and phenomena, the seminar will elucidate these elements in their historical contexts and with the help of theoretical explanations.

- Inhalt:
- In the Introduction to his 2022 book The Right: The Hundred-Year War for American Conservatism, Matthew Continetti relates how he asked the students in his college class on the history of American conservatism what surprised them most about the course material. One student answered: “I’m surprised that any of this exists.” The anecdote may illustrate that knowledge about this major force in the development of American culture is limited, even among American students.
Partly following Continetti’s inspiration, this advanced seminar sets out to introduce students to the ideas, institutions, and personalities that have contributed to American conservatism since World War II. Far from a stable, monolithic movement, conservatism has been subject to centrifugal forces, but there have also been phases of solidification and unification. The seminar will study influential publications, landmark events, and decisive controversies to explain the emergence of the various strands of American conservatism. Particular attention will be paid to the tension between an establishment consensus and populist impulses. We will explore how philosophical and economic ideas have affected domestic policy as well as perspectives on international relations. Apart from questions of institutional politics, a focus will be on attitudes towards social and cultural issues, from the women’s movement to sex education, from the Western canon to affirmative action, and from modern art to political correctness. The seminar is also interested in the relationship of the conservative movement to political parties (the GOP in particular) and how it became organized in think tanks, around newspapers and magazines, and on the internet.

- This course offers an introduction to key themes and methods in American cultural studies as an interdisciplinary field of inquiry. Thematically, we will explore issues such as religion and immigration, the frontier and regionalism, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, the media and technology, America as nature s nation and America and the world; conceptually, the focus will be on equality and difference as utopian ideas that have shaped American culture from colonial times to the present.
The course is designed to provide you with basic skills in American cultural studies, with a strong emphasis on reading and discussing various kinds of texts in their cultural contexts. Our primary materials will include short stories, poems and excerpts from novels as well as historical documents, essays, political speeches, photographs, popular songs and films, while several theoretical essays will provide us with a language for discussing changing concepts of culture.

- The seminar is an introduction to the essential methodological problems, principles, theoretical models, and historical contexts indispensable for 'doing' British and American cultural studies.
We will be exploring the development of concepts and ideas of 'culture', especially in Britain but also in the US, and particularly from the 19th century all the way through to the present day. We'll be thinking about the relationship between power and culture, and also about the ways in which literary texts and other cultural products reflect, critique, and mediate power relations and imbalances within society. In the process, the seminar will explore themes and questions of politics and ideology; mass media and its social and cultural impacts; ethnicity, race, and multiculturalism; and gender and sexuality.
We'll be examining all these topics through the varied and various prisms of literary texts (short stories, poems, and a drama), film & TV, and essays of philosophy and theory.
Learning outcomes, Skills:
To relate in a logical fashion the central themes and problems of cultural studies with literary texts and cultural products, and also to recognize, reconstruct, express and analyse in spoken and written form their mutual relevance. In the first instance the analytical models and special terminology of cultural studies will be established. Following this, basic skills of both a formal and linguistic nature will be developed. The ability of students to communicate and interact in an academic setting will be promoted and enhanced through interactive group projects.

- With the exception of the play that we'll be reading at the end of the course (Alan Bennett's The History Boys (2004)), all the requisite reading material will be uploaded to the VC prior to each seminar session.

- “Das Ich ist nicht Herr im eigenen Haus.” Sigmund Freud’s famous dictum first appeared in his 1917 essay, ‘Eine Schwierigkeit in der Psychoanalyse’. The quotation itself neatly encapsulated the burgeoning science of psychoanalysis, whose mission it was to investigate the unconscious, irrational and sexual dimensions to human existence. However, it also spoke to a broader and messier crisis of identity and selfhood in modernity. In the wake of Darwin and Nietzsche, it was clear that reason and rationality had lost its sovereignty over the body: human beings were both descended from the animal kingdom, and – despite a thin veneer of civilization – intimately entangled with it. Above all, the decades around the turn of the nineteenth century witnessed significant scientific and cultural challenges to the ideal (and ideology) of a stable and unified ‘self’. Literary writers were becoming more preoccupied than ever before with the irresolvable tensions between soul and body, mind and matter, and gender and sexuality.
In this seminar, we’ll be examining (re-)conceptions and portrayals of the body – in relationship to the mind – in fin-de-siècle and modernist literature, in English and German. The course will begin with an overview of the cultural and historical contexts; and against that backdrop, we’ll read a small selection of Freud’s psychoanalytic writings. Our discussions of the literary texts will then take a thematic approach. Beginning with ‘Bodies and Ghosts’, we shall read Henry James’s spine-tingling ghost story, The Turn of the Screw (1899) as a negotiation between the natural and the supernatural, the ‘mad’ and the ‘sane’. We will then consider transformed, alienated, and animalized bodies in Franz Kafka’s Die Verwandlung (1915) and ‘Ein Hungerkünstler’ (1922). The fraught relationship between female sexuality and society will come into focus – with striking relevance to the age of ‘Me Too’ – in Arthur Schnitzler’s ground-breaking stream-of-conscious novella, Fräulein Else (1924). Finally, we turn to the great British modernist Virginia Woolf’s extraordinary historical fiction Orlando: A Biography, from 1928. Dedicated to Woolf’s lover Vita Sackville-West, this short novel is an ode to the queer and the ‘trans’ body in history: a playful and insightful meditation on the slipperiness of gender roles and identities in modernity.
We’ll be discussing the English-language texts in English, and the German-language texts in German.

- “My name is Karim Amir, and I am an Englishman born and bred, almost. I am often considered to be a funny kind of Englishman, a new breed as it were, having emerged from two old histories.” This is how the celebrated British writer, Hanif Kureishi, kicks open his picaresque novel of identities lost and re-forged, The Buddha of Suburbia: a state-of-the-nation snapshot of 1970s Britain, but also a deeply irreverent – often uproarious – portrait of the myriad challenges of location and adaptation faced by first- and second-generation migrants in a majority white culture and society that was often actively hostile towards them.
The Buddha of Suburbia was released to immediate acclaim in 1990, at the start of a decade which saw significant positive changes both in public attitudes towards ethnic and cultural minorities, and in the conceptual vocabularies deployed to think and write about multiculturalism, interculturality, and transculturality. After an overview of the emergence of multicultural Britain in the postwar period, we will turn to a survey of some of these theories, including Wolfgang Welsch’s notion of ‘transculturality’, Stewart Hall’s and Homi K. Bhabha’s related conceptions of ‘hybridity’, and Kimberlé Crenshaw’s controversial yet enduringly influential theory of intersectionality. We’ll be using this eclectic theoretical ‘prism’ to discuss a small selection of seminal literary texts which have grappled with both the fraught and fruitful coexistence of cultural identities within recent and contemporary British and US-American societies. After discussing Kureishi’s masterpiece, we will turn our attention to the much-celebrated literary debut, The Namesake (2003), by the Pulitzer Prize-winning Indian-American writer Jhumpa Lahiri. We will finish the course by travelling with Bernadine Evaristo on her extraordinary fictional journey through the lives of sixteen women of colour in contemporary Britain, the Booker Prize-winning Girl, Woman, Other (2019).

- Inhalt:
- Sir Walter Scott is often seen as a major contributor to (or perhaps the founding father of) the literary genre of the modern historical novel. While those of his characters who stem from the lower classes often seem very vivid and round, his more aristocratic figures appear to be rather flat and stiff. In addition, many of his works are set in a Scotland divided between 'underdeveloped' Highlands and 'civilised' Lowlands (see Rob Roy, Old Mortality or Waverley). His novel Quentin Durward has a different geographical setting but integrates a relevant Scottish context. In this seminar, we will be looking into these (and other) characteristics of his novels from the perspective of Cultural Studies, paying special attention to phenomena such as Caledonian Antisyzygy, Highlandism and Jacobitism. Note: Before our seminar starts, please make sure that you have read at least two out of the four novels mentioned above.

- Inhalt:
- If you want to spark a discussion, simply ask the question, "What is American food culture?" Answers range from the assertion that the United States has no food culture to the claim that a culinary tradition such as barbecue is a uniquely American cultural product that conveys a multiethnic history and a local and regional identity. Others claim that New England culinary traditions form the culinary roots of American cuisine. Still others point to McDonalds, Burger King, and similar fast-food establishments known for selling burgers and fries as the epitome of American taste, presentation, and capitalist expansionism. Someone might also argue that the United States is a melting pot of cuisines brought by immigrants old and new. In this seminar, we will consider how we might define American food and how American food defines Americans. We will also talk about culinary traditions (like 4th of July barbecues, Thanksgiving dinners, and Christmas Day meals), approach the topic literarily, and take a closer look at concepts such as food and gender or food and power.

- Inhalt:
- According to Alfred Tennyson, “'Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all”, and this seminar will deal with the themes of love and loss in poetry ranging from the Victorian period with its elaborate culture of mourning into the 20th century. The poetry will limit itself to examples from Ireland and England, looking specifically at the 19th century elaborate culture of mourning, poetry of the First World War and the growth of Modernism.
Love is one of the most common and oldest genres of poetry in the history of literature and the reverse of this is, naturally, poetry dealing with the theme of loss, an important aspect of life and many poets have found it to be an interesting theme to deal with in their work. There are, of course, different sorts of love – romantic love, patriotic love, love in a religious sense, and all of these have their counterpart in loss.
Amongst the poets dealt with will be Christina Rossetti (1830-1894); A.E. Houseman (1859-1936); Thomas Hardy (1840–1928), G.M. Hopkins (1844-1889), W.B. Yeats (1865-1939); Rupert Brook (1887-1915); Robert Graves (1895-1985); Mina Loy (1882-1966) and others.

- Students should familiarise themselves with the basic principles of Poetics, the understanding of how a poem's different elements come together and produce certain effects on the reader. One recommended general introductory text is Poetic Form: An Introduction (Cambridge Introductions to Literature) by Michael D. Hurley and Michael O’Neill
