Inhalt:

In this course, we shall trace the history of children's literature, looking at various examples (mostly fiction and poetry) from the late seventeenth century to the present day. Apart from reading the texts in view of their cultural and historical context, we will discuss how children's literature helps to create notions of 'the child' throughout the centuries. From a more theoretical perspective, the course also addresses genre questions, i.e. how can we define 'children's literature', and in how far does the genre distinguish itself from other genres in the literary field? Last but not least, our concern will be with the characteristics of this genre.

Our course shall start with four sessions on the origins of children's literature in the 17th and 18th century. All texts for these sessions are available via the ECCO-database (Eighteenth-Century Collection Online). Where printed versions are available, these will also be provided on the reserved shelf.
In the next five sessions, we shall use texts written in the 19th and the early 20th century for our discussions. The last five sessions before our concluding meeting will largely be devoted to award-winning children's literature from the 21st century.
You can find the selection of topics for presentation in the Reading list.

P.S.: The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, His Dark Materials and the Harry Potter Series are not on the list on purpose, as they were already discussed in some previous classes. Sorry about that!

Inhalt:

Die Übung wendet sich an diejenigen Studierenden in den Lehramtsstudiengängen (vorzugsweise vertieft) und im Magisterstudiengang, die innerhalb des nächsten Jahres ihr Staats- bzw. Magisterexamen ablegen wollen. Im Vordergrund stehen Besprechungen von Staatsexamensklausuren vergangener Jahre, die auch für die Bearbeitung von Magisterklausuren interessant sind. Auch die Vorbereitung auf die mündlichen Prüfungen (Leselisten, Ablauf der Prüfungen etc.) wird besprochen.
Die Übung kann bei regelmäßiger aktiver Teilnahme außerdem als "Betreuungsübung Englische Literaturwissenschaft" im Vertiefungsmodul Literaturwissenschaft des BA-Studiengangs eingebracht werden.

Von den Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmern wird die Bereitschaft zur Übernahme von Gruppenreferaten zur Erarbeitung einzelner Themenbereiche erwartet.

Der Besuch der Übung ist unabhängig von der Prüferwahl. Im Wintersemester 2008/09 kann aufgrund der Personalsituation nur eine Übung angeboten werden.

Inhalt:

This lecture is the fourth instalment in a series of 6 lectures altogether, surveying the historical development of the three major genres in English Literature (poetry, drama, novel). Discussing selected authors and plays with respect to their historical and cultural contexts, the lecture covers the period from the Eighteenth to the Twentieth Century.

In the first third of our course, we shall move very swiftly from Jacobean City Comedy at the beginning of the Seventeenth Century to Restauration Comedy during the last decades before 1700. We shall then take a look at diverse specimen of eighteenth-century theatre and drama (e.g. John Gay's Beggar's Opera, Sheridan's The School for Scandal, and comedies by Frances Burney). After a swift glance at 19th-century Melodrama the lecture will then proceed in slower steps from the end of the 19th century on to 1956 - with sessions on Oscar Wilde, G.B. Shaw, the dramatists of the Irish Literary Renaissance (e.g. Yeats, Synge and O'Casey), T.S. Eliot, Samuel Beckett and John Osborne. The last sessions of the term will assess currents in twentieth-century drama after 1956.
A definitive list of the texts to be discussed will be announced by September.

Inhalt:

The seminar will discuss literature from Australia and New Zealand from the nineteenth to the twentieth century, covering all genres. We shall look at texts from the pens of the white settlers and their descendants as well as Aboriginal or Maori writers. Our focus of interest will lie with the particular concerns of settler colonies within the field of the so-called 'New Literatures in English'. For this purpose, we shall look at literary negotiations of identity as they are expressed through representations of place, land or history and through the attempt to establish a literature of one's own.

Some poems or extracts from texts will be provided as scans on a site in the Virtual Campus. The selection given below is still under construction. :-)

Students should have read Mister Pip, True History of the Kelly Gang and Gould's Book of Fish by the beginning of the term.
